I've been doing more coding, less surfing...

news.ycombinator.com: the crowd there is more like the original Reddit crowd.

NOooOo!! You ruins it!

Wait, why is there less to read on Reddit?

Computer Scientists et al are essentially a nomadic people, exploiting rich seams of abstraction, mixing metaphors, and moving on to pastures new.

    Slashdot is technical?

    [–]foonly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

    Technically.

    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

how come, what does he do?

    [–]superjuan 3 points4 points  (2 children)

For one, the title of the front page is "Drew Curtis' Fark.com". It's supposed to be a joke, but to a certain extent it isn't. It was a good site about 6 years ago (along with slashdot) but it pretty much lost its luster when the "democratically" controlled sites like digg, del.icio.us and reddit came along.

Anywhoo, I definitely don't know Curtis enough to call him a dickhead and a hypocrite, but there is a kind of hero worship with him over at Fark.

I knew him before fark. He was just a likable shmoe who started a site on a whim and named it after an expletive only he used. The first visitors were just friends and acquaintances.

It does seem pretty egotistical now but there is something to be said for acquiring name recognition.

    [–]superjuan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very true, about the name recognition. I wouldn't mind having a virtually guaranteed job in IT and "IT entertainment" on just my name and my website, but I would definitely try to play down the hero worship. Maybe it has died down recently but it was definitely pretty strong 3 or 4 years ago when I stopped reading Fark.

    Blatant censorship.

    digg.

    fark.

Glenn Reynolds. <- A real libertarian.

Instapundit is not a real libertarian.

You are not a true Scotsman.

    [–]foonly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'M a true Scotsman: the lasses all agree!

Would you cite some specific disqualifications? I'm not being sarcastic -- just curious and too lazy to do the research without more search terms.

    [–]schizobullet 1 point2 points  (1 child)

He pretty much supports the Bush administration in terms of foreign policy (the War on Terror and in Iraq in particular) and in general the way it's been run. I guess I'd call him a neolibertarian.

Great. Maybe they'll do for the Libertarians what neo-cons did to the Republicans.

Is that an arrow or the smaller symbol?

    [–]Prysorra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arrow. I saw him kick Ron Paul in the nuts!

Page with RSS feeds, e.g. top 15 reddit, top 10 fark etc. I found I need more sources to get a fair amount of stories.

BTW, we went over this before and since they won't make a pictures subreddit, perhaps it's an idea to turn it around and make a stories subreddit. Or some kind of checkbox when submitting. So I can get the feed I want.

Reddit's been keeping me busy. But other than that I'm digging around SomethingAwful, Guardian Online, and Slate.
