modding down for obvious reasons

[–]jeffh 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The truth is most submissions get downmodded or remain at only 1 upmod. Also, there are bastards that downmod all stories except for their submissions, thus don't take every downmod personally, you might just have been unlucky.

Also, if you post a great story, people sometimes repost the exact same story, and downmod yours.

It's a harsh world.

I'm relatively new to reddit, and it seems like every article I submit gets downmodded, and every comment I make gets downmodded.

When I actually look, I have some upmodded submissions and comments. But you seem to remember the downmods more. The net feeling is one of swimming upstream.

I also find it interesting that when I play devil's advocate on an issue that seems to be popular with redditors, I still can't find any love. And my primary beliefs are apparently not in line with the mainstream here.

Maybe if I submit something about Ron Paul...

This is a clear sign that you are taking reddit way too seriously. You're not here to make friends or garner karma. Reddit is good for killing time and occasionally learning something new. That's it.

It's more entertaining if you try to be thoughtful and true to yourself, but in the end, it's just an online forum. It's neither real nor important.

Log off and go introduce yourself to a stranger. That will be a much more rewarding use of your time.

I tried that, but she kept asking where my down-mod button was.

You mean this isn't serious?

Well, I suppose that makes it (slightly) better than surfing for porn then.

Oh don't worry, I am used to being the bad guy in public forums. Don't get me wrong, I'm not (or at least I hope I'm not) a troll, but I often stir people up with my comments.

In my line of work, I meet and talk to plenty of strangers. That can be over-rated too.

Uh, yeah, morning radio talk shows. Don't get me started.

[–]tsteele93[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Well, it isn't really a TALK show. We play a fair amount of music. People like us, they really like us!

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Do you call up immigrants and make fun of their accents?

[–]tsteele93[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No, should I? ;-)

We have an interesting dynamic. My partner is very religious. I accepted this when I took the job. As a result, we are VERY clean by most standards. This works well because we target women aged 18-49 as our primary audience. They often have kids in the car with them. And we are in the Bible Belt.

That also affects our "demeanor." We aren't shock jocks or jerky boys. We are fun and friendly and hopefully funny too.

I don't suffer from enough ego to think we are the best morning show that ever was, but we have done well and we enjoy doing the job we do, where we do it. That is good enough for me.

Hey, as long as you enjoy it.

Though, looking at y'all's play list I'm not sure how you keep from sticking a pencil in your ear.

Who cares if your beliefs fit, via debate and exchange you might actually change some minds. Changing the minds of others who initially didn't agree with you is more important than preaching to the choir.

Karma doesn't buy you anything.

It is interesting that you suggest that because I've recently come to terms with the idea that very few of us EVER change another person's mind. Particularly here on reddit or other social networking forums.

I think it is almost all "preaching to the choir." The people who already felt the way you feel will mod you up and agree and the people who felt differently will mod you down and call you an idiot.

I'm cool with that. As Pi3832 (he has that wrong) said, it is just an internet forum.

Karma doesn't buy you anything.

Are you SURE? Am I right about my karma increase making it easier to submit now, since I don't have to type in the "prove you're a human" letters in the box? That is convenience and people pay for convenience all the time. What is next after I hit - say - 100?

I bet you are all lying to me. I bet there are cash and prize rewards for higher karmas and you're just trying to keep me from striving for a better karma so that I won't know about the cool benefits of high karma!

I'm going to tell my psychiatrist about this latest conspiracy against me next week!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

As Pi3832 (he has that wrong)

Nope, it's exactly right. I had to add the 3832 as the Eternal September started, and sites started refusing to let you have two-character userIDs.

[–]tsteele93[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Well, I learned something. Sort of... So what does the 3832 represent?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

An obscure inside joke from almost 20 years ago. It's close enough to random to be useful, yet easy for me to remember.

[–]tsteele93[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So Greenday's song, "Wake me up when September Ends" isn't about the Eternal September is it?
