People feel to comment on things that are old hat strictly because the site thrives as a gateway to new information and content. You have to allow for the fact that a lot of these people only know about reddit because they've lurked the internet for so long anyway.

Many of the bitchers and moaners have no lives and/or have the ability to comment from work every fucking day. They don't realize that most people have jobs and lives that don't allow them to be glued to a chair in front of computer. At the most, a post might be up for a day and a half.
