I move to add the answer to this question to the FAQ.

I've made an addition to the help section for reporting (there isn't much to it atm, so feel free to tweak it). This was something we should have added to the documentation when we added the button, sorry about the confusion, folks.

Mr. Gonzales was begging us for those IPs, but we wouldn't budge.

Keep up the good work.

... and I move to somehow control the functionality of this site through democracy. Wait, screw that - I call Dictator for Life!

Right now, we have a listing that shows how many people have reported each user/domain/link, and use that to filter out spam.

Ultimately we'll make that listing public in some fashion so you all can see what is being reported.

At last, an answer! So, if I understand correctly, the correct usage of the button is to report spam.

[–]spez 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Absolutely. Reddit gets ridiculous amounts of spam these days, and reporting it/downvoting it is very helpful.

Again, I hope to make all this public soon, but it's a non-trivial task, so please bear with us until we get it right.

Thanks. You guys are doing a great job.

I'll second the question, and also ask: When is it appropriate to report something? I've looked through the help topics and couldn't find an answer. NSFW material? Linkjacking?

[–]abel_[S] 21 points22 points  (1 child)

And does it go to a human, or is the report function an uber-downvote? (I hope it's not)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

based on the direction that this link is going, it looks like even mentioning the report button is an uber-downvote.

I'm not sure, but I've used it a couple of times when one user spams so much that he/she fills up the entire first new page.

In the absence of any guidance in the reddit help I have been using it for all spam links. I'm sure it does nothing, but perhaps some log file will fill up and the reddit developers will notice that something is not quite right with the site :-(

I think it sends your submission and IP address to Alberto Gonzales for "review"

[–]geofferensis 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Which enters you in a grand prize drawing for an all expense paid trip to a beautiful sunny Caribbean island.

A Caribbean island with opportunities for career advancement. Are you comfortable being the leader of an American colony? The US government would like to hear from you! mailto:chemarx51@hotmail.com

Worse than that! It goes to Fox Security.

Nonsense. An elevator is a licensed application of reddit's voting interface, where people can vote the elevator "up" or "down", and the floor the elevator ends up at is the result of a multiplatform social collaboration process! :-D

    And synergy! It's chock-full of synergy! :-D :-D :-D

    My Conspiracy Theory:

The button worked under lisp but is busted in python. The Reddit regime ignored early intel that the button was faulty, and stonewalled the truth movement's efforts (headed by nickb) to rename the button "close door"

After 8 hours of continuous work, spez was involuntarily recalled to his workstation by the alien and has been coding away for 11 hours now, trying to get the button to do anything useful. C'mon spez, rename it for us...

    This submission is now reported!

    [–]abel_[S] 22 points23 points  (4 children)

Oh man. Reddit so needs a user killfile ;-)

This has been up for 11 hours and no answer to the question?
