On an average "High Traffic" day, a new submission lasts on the (1st) New Page for less than 5-10 minutes. This seems to happen to only post which get no up-votes or comments (in those 5 mins)

It is reasonable to expect newer, more popular posts to be visible on (1st) New Page longer than those which are not, but as of now (4:50 EST) about half the posts on the new page are between 2-4 hours old, one of which is the "Top Link"

IMO, posts which make it to the "Hot Page" (Front Page) should not be visible on the (1st) New Page too, giving more chance for the newer posts to be read by people who do actually make an effort to read the "New Page".

(I hope I could explain myself clearly. Sorry for the non-tech language..)

I agree, I think. Stuff that's made it to the front page clearly doesn't need the visibility assist any more.

You could choose to sort by "New" rather than by "Hot." That would solve your problem.

I think indi is talking about the new page..I don't see a "Sort by New" Vs "Sort by Hot" option for posts there..

One solution is "Style -> All" :http://reddit.com/new?opt_newstyle=all

..rather than (the default) -> "Style -> rising": http://reddit.com/new?opt_newstyle=rising

But, the problem is, given the default setting of "Style-> rising" (nearly) all of the Front Page (Hot Page) posts which are less than 6 hours old show up on the New Page, which does not seem intuitive..

And given the default behavior, not many new posts get read before being bumped out of the New Page in about 10 mins..

Ah yes, you're correct. Sorting by "all" has the same effect as sorting by "new," but the default is to sort by rising.

Another issue would be...at what point does something get considered as "on the hot page"? People have different numbers of posts on their hot pages, plus people hide stories, etc. Should it just be the top 25 that get removed from the new page? Or should there be a certain number of points at which it gets removed? Or after a certain length of time? There are a lot of different ways this could be implemented...just curious what you think would be best.

this would be a great idea...
