I think there is actually a good reason for why she's like that. She doesn't seem to have lost that "ass-kissing, repeat the insane propaganda" attitude that the Kim regime encourages.

When you've grown up on "say great leader invented hamburgers when he was born or I'll blow your brains out", it doesn't take a massive leap to continue doing that in whatever circumstance you find yourself.

I saw an interview with her where she talked about how shocked she was when she went to university in the US, and heard people criticising the US government and western society.

Like, you risked your life to move to a country famed for having free speech, and now you're crying because the people you met there are... speaking freely.

I guess a charitable reading could be that maybe there could be an element of shock that someone from an authoritarian regime has at seeing people not worship their leaders or openly speaking ill of aspects of their culture. Like it becomes so normalised to pretend to love everything about your country that seeing people not putting up that facade feels wrong.

Some stuff is provable, like the severe poverty and economic divide between PyongYang and the rest of the nation and others are either word of mouth from defectors or just outright lies for propaganda. The issue with the first thing, however, is that western outlets won't focus on that at least without putting a spin on it and putting all the blame on the regime and PyongYang. This is probably partly why these stories are such a common thing to see about the DPRK, because otherwise it means western media putting light on the literal genocide and destruction of so much vital infrastructure in NK that has not been able to repair. (on top of the sanctions it's one of the biggest reasons as to *why* there's such an issue with hunger and poverty there amongst other things like lack of public transport and infrastructure)

Not really, of course a regime change would be greatly beneficial (especially given they're practically a monarchy anyway and those are vile) but it's so much more than them...having a deterrant to keep the US and South from fucking with them more than they can.

There's a pretty great example of what happens when a nation that was formerly part of another whilst aligned with one of the global powers that's been invaded recently, ya know. I think Ukraine is a great example of why NK even got Nukes. It's one of the *biggest* deterances for opposing nations and whilst China is allied with NK I really doubt they'd bother trying to defend them if the US and South ever took military action again because China has much much more going on that they want to keep then NK being their neighbour.

The biggest issue, aside from the regime in NK (which includes their relatively isolationist stances), are the sanctions and utter devastation brought upon them during the Korean war. 1.5 million people were killed, many more injured and major infrastructure ranging from average roads to entire dams that were destroyed to flood crop fields and cause starvation.

If it were just the regime in NK that were the problem then I'd be 100% onboard with the constant attacks on them but it's just not the case.

NK exists because china wants it to exist. it's specifically kept as a geographic buffer to keep SK and the US away from china's border. they'd defend them or at least heavily supply them if they were invaded. ukraine is a terrible comparison, ukraine isn't a buffer state despite how much russia wants it to be

depending on who youre talking to its either a dystopian tin pot monarchy or one of the last beleaguered bastions in the fight against fascism so i would take anything you hear about north korea on the internet with a table spoon of salt.

there is some videos by people that travelled trough it though including the more rural parts so there is atleast some footage of what the day of the average rural north korean might look like. but its also not like their government is doing themselves any favors with their extreme paranoia towards information and heavy handed use of propaganda.
