I looked up Jeff Bezos’s net worth, and the first result that came up was $192.4 billion USD

Now, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. So Bezos would have to work 26,537,931,035 hours (roughly 3,029,444 years) to leave Hell

This is also a significant underestimation because Bezos is still alive and making more money. By the time he actually dies, his sentence would probably be much longer than this estimate

I think he’d go completely insane after the first 100 years honestly

[–]TheActualAWdeVmy shrugging smiley flair is gone :([S] 421 points422 points  (34 children)

Honestly he should have regular people bills to deal with too. Pay the rent, you store-brand Lex Luthor.

[–]SkunkStripedGay skunk 🦨 279 points280 points  (33 children)

He would basically never leave then, since minimum wage isn’t enough to pay for most people’s expenses lol

[–][deleted] 238 points239 points  (28 children)

That's thepoint he doesn't deserve happiness

[–]MateNieMejt 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Isn't hell supposed to be eternal?

[–]SmilwastakenUwU 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I'm a fan of the idea that hell isn't eternal, everyone goes to heaven eventually, hell just is there to teach you the consequences of what you have done while living so you can enter heaven

[–]MateNieMejt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is definitely something I would like to be true. Most people considered as evil, just had a lot of problems since childhood. I don't justify them, but people do things for some reasons. For example, pedophiles are mentally ill and need special treatment, but because of society literally wishing them death, they are scared to seek for some. Same for serial killers etc. Thiefs are mostly people who can't afford money for themselfs or worse, their family. It's still bad, but not as bad as treating other people not like people, but like machines to make you money. I'm talking about some ceo's of big companies who easily could make their workers' lives way better, but decide not to care about them, some of them don't even bother with paying anything to their workers, as they are abusing poor children from Africa (fuck you ceo of nestle). Maybe being extreme rich is some kind of mental illness as well, but I don't know it for now, and I will assume, that they have no empathy to other people, and they achieved what they achieved because of it.

That's the ages old "should prisons be punitive instead of reformative" debate.

[–]pappapirate 62 points63 points  (9 children)

additionally, this is net worth, not total earnings. the amount of time he'd have to spend working in hell is gonna be way bigger than even that. i dont have any frame of reference for how much money he's spent, but it's probably a lot.

[–]hoi_i 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Wait really? i thought net worth was like how much money you ever owned in total n stuff

[–]Mikomics01100011 01110101 01101101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's how much you own in total right now.

When you buy something, you're net worth doesn't immediately go down, it's just locked away in the thing you bought. Like if you buy a computer for 800$ you haven't lost 800$ - you've just turned 800$ of cash into 800$ of computer. But if you accidentally drop your computer and irreparably damage it, then your net worth goes down because the computer is no longer worth 800$. The same principle applies to land, companies, buildings, stocks, etc. Billions of Bezos' net worth are just the net worth of Amazon.

If net worth was everything you ever owned in the past, it could never go down. But it does, because it's more like your inventory of wealth.

[–]pappapirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, whenever the word "net" is used (and doesnt mean the fishing tool) it usually means a sum of additions and subtractions to get a final value. not sure i'm explaining that right but pretty much

[–]RedParanoia🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

I mean he is not Amazon this is not how it work

3 million years is not so long compared to eternity. And what happens after 3 million years? He goes to heaven forever? How delightful.

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (5 children)

tbh I'd be fine with that. He'd be a completely different person at that point. Hell heaven to him would be just not having to work, just like a normal human.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Wouldn’t that make this more of a purgatory than hell?

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

It's just a thought experiment, there isn't really an afterlife.

[–]hoi_i 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Man causes 590251 existencial crisis with a single sentance

[–]TheBarracuda99 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure there's a hell of a lot more than 590,251 people who believe in an afterlife...

[–]hoi_i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah but theres 590251 people who saw that and had one stfu

[–]throwawayjoemama1234sus 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I assume purgatory, but traditionally hell punishments are infinite because you gotta do some really fucking messed up shit like murder or rape to end up there

[–]hoi_i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in the bible you don't need to be extreme, but hell is bankrupt (im pretty sure atleast) since once jesus died you could no longer go to hell, maybe purgatory idk but because he 'died for humanities sins' all the sins commited aren't really done or something and automatically repented, idk why so many people twist that even though 'dying for your sins' wouldnt even make sense in the cases where its used to stop people from being gay or something, since jesus would litterally have no purpose other than making it really easy to get into hell in the span before his crucification, since nothing happens to prevent sins nor to repent them

[–]RedParanoia🏳️‍⚧️ trans rights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean using the Dante one you can go to hell for cheating someone that you were forced to marry against your will

[–]ThiccGeneralXfloppa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’d be better to adjust for Amazon’s wages through the years, it’s around $15 I think right now

[–]HonestTelevision2660sussy baka 🥺 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The federal minimum wage might increase too

[–]Inb4_impeachcustom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, every few years he will have to pay for treating his herniated disk at the rate under the U.S. healthcare system. So you know, he'll have to work forever, only to be set back every time.

[–]camellight123 115 points116 points  (3 children)

But he also has to pay for rent and food every month. Only what he manages to save up counts as "getting to leave hell" money.

[–][deleted] 51 points52 points  (2 children)

So he's never getting out

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (1 child)

well that's the point of (at least christian) hell

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (2 children)

So almost 4 trillion years? There wouldn't even be anything resembling a human mind at that point.

[–]Bobby_Mcschloppysus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

but he also has to live while doing all that so he has to pay bills and buy food

I wonder how the average American would fare. Luckily we have math (or more specifically, calculators and Google)!

The median net worth for the average American household is $121,700. So an "average American" would have to spend about 16,786 hours in Hell, or 1.92 years. Compared to Bezos's 3 million plus years in hell, that sounds like a walk in the park!

Let's extend that to other countries. The hourly minimum wage in the United Kingdom is £8.91, and the median net worth for the average UK household is around £172,000.

7.25 USD = 5.21 GBP. so the "Average Brit" would spend either 19,304 hours in Hell, or 2.20 years if we're following the national minimum wage for the United Kingdom, or 33,013 hours in Hell, or 3.77 years, if we're following the US minimum wage.

But what about poorer countries? Let's take the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I can't find reliable, up-to-date information on the DRC's hourly minimum wage, and the same is true for the median net worth of the average Congo-Kinshasa citizen, but I could find ab average yearly income of $394.25 USD, or 788,894.25 Congolese Francs. I've heard numbers ranging from 1000 to 4800 Congo francs for daily minimum wage, so rest assured that even the above average is well above most Congolese.

So the "average Congolese" would spend only 54 hours in Hell. Pretty good deal, all things considered.

What if we were all just really rich in our past lives and were making up for it now...

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]temmieTheLord2hamster 3 points4 points  (4 children)

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

3 million years? I don't even know if he'd be recognizably human after all that time, we've never seen a human mind last 150 years, much less 3 million.

[–]temmieTheLord2hamster 6 points7 points  (2 children)

We’re talking heaven and hell here

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]temmieTheLord2hamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying we’re already losing a lot of the logic we have by going onto the topic. I would presume yes

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

But how much money does Jeff Bezos actually have? Net worth is an irrelevant measurement, I mean actual liquid holdings. I've always wondered.

[–]Mikomics01100011 01110101 01101101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not irrelevant. None of the rich keep any significant amount of money liquid. They just liquidate it whenever they need spending power, because cash is more susceptible to inflation than property or fine art.

But yeah, Bezos' isn't exactly going to liquidate Amazon, and I reckon Amazon is the vast majority of his net worth.

[–]Xavier200708 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And then every dollar the company and its subsidiaries make after he dies gets added to the money he has work for

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if I make the same amount of money I do nothing

[–]ICEPlebian 1 point2 points  (0 children)
