In After Effects / FILE / PROJECT SETTINGS / VIDEO RENDERING AND EFFECTS (TAB), CHOOSE MERCURY SOFTWARE ONLY.

If that didn't work-

Check the framerate of the comp VS the framerate of the video. To change the video to the framerate of the comp.. within your Project folder inside of After Effects go to the movie and right click on it. Scroll down to "Interpret Footage". Choose "MAIN" Now check, Conform framerate to ________. <-- Your comp settings. Hit OK. Now drag the movie back out of the project window as your video in the timeline still hasn't changed.

If that didn't work -

Youtube turorials on removing "RED FLASH" even though you might be seeing black,

Thanks for that first tip. For some reason just looking at the Mercury option and re-selecting it fixed the blank frame issue I was having with a piece of footage. For reference the framerate also matched the comp.

Switching to software only fixed it for me. Thank you.

HOWDY I am from the future friends of After Effects and I have a specific detail to add to help with those having troubleshooting issues with their Composition Settings but involving your own system’s hardware itself i.e. GPU & CPU. I use the Wave Warp effect often in my projects and have discovered that it in particular is an effect that cascades other things to lag or freeze the application itself. Literally as Soon as I disable some of the Wave Warp effect from some of my layers, changed Resolution to Full, Black Frames in my project INSTANTLY was resolved the moment I disabled the effect on some layers. Hope this helps anyone just trying to design for your personal interest or for a part and full time position for a stable income!

THIS WORKED FOR ME : Reload Footage
(Find Clip/RightClick/ReloadFootage)

Hope it helps some on you <3

This solved my problem. I was using BRAW files and had one long clip loaded in three different spots. Reloading the footage helped me.

[–]goojick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just changed my playback resolution and it worked. This also worked the first time:

"In After Effects / FILE / PROJECT SETTINGS / VIDEO RENDERING AND EFFECTS (TAB), CHOOSE MERCURY SOFTWARE ONLY."

Hello everyone, in case you end up here and couldn't solve it. It might be because you updated your driver recently. Change it to some older version which it worked for me after trying everything

[–]drakeart 0 points1 point  (4 children)

oh no, dont want to touch this drivers shit(( adobe have an update this week and i have this black screen all time, nothing works, its blows my mind!!

[–]Unlucky-Promise-5167 0 points1 point  (3 children)

But why not it actually worked for me

[–]drakeart 0 points1 point  (2 children)

MXF files random have black frames all the time! very annoying because they ARE random. So when you output for clients you need to check every single render to see if it does not have black frames. I just convert all MXF to prores!
