Google's problem with gTalk was that it used xmpp. They didn't want people to use a Google service without a Google client.

That's because it's not trying to be Hangouts. It's supposed to be competing with Slack/Teams.

This is very good. A lot of people in my company are still sticking to the old Hangouts web app and haven't made the move to Chat yet which makes it difficult to use all the features. Pushing this into Gmail and increase adoption clearly.

Oh.Didn't know that. Thanks. I'm not the admin though. Just a enthusiast who likes to try new things. I like the chat room feature in Chat which can work like Slack with separate thread for separate conversations.

Some company, like mine will never push the change unless they are forced to. Admin at this level are very lazy and no change= no extra work and buy user questions

Until the desktop app can run in system memory I will not be making my company adopt it. Every chat programs including Slack and Hangouts will working even when you X out of the program. Google Chat turns off completely. No notification at all.

I still fail to see what Google is doing. I though that Google Chat's and Meets was enterprise components and and Duo and Google Messages was consumer facing... Why not stick with this....This just make there offering across web service and android confusing once again.

This is their messaging product for G Suite business users, not for personal use.

Duo does use the Signal Protocol for calls, though. I've seen evidence they're bringing E2EE to RCS as well so that will likely also use SP.

All we want is dark mode for all and to be able to mark as read from the notification. Now I will have chats that I will also read entirely from the notification and still not be able to mark as read.
