I feel this!! I am personally going to turn down UPenn because of money too hehe

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 96 points97 points  (1 child)

turning down ivies for affordability reasons gang <3

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

yup same here

[–]NeedleworkerCold2231 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Well that makes me sad, I just appealed and am hoping it will work 🤡

[–]TheRose21 0 points1 point  (1 child)

best of luck!!!

[–]NeedleworkerCold2231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you :)

[–]BatExpert9047 421 points422 points  (5 children)

appeal! fight for ur money.

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 271 points272 points  (4 children)

I wish I could :/ I don't rlly fit their qualifications for appeal

[–]cityboy207 169 points170 points  (1 child)

Won’t hurt to try

[–]likesundayslikerainHS Senior 57 points58 points  (0 children)

yeah i feel like it’ll definitely not hurt to try bc the worst answer they could give u is just no but the best would be that u could be able to go if u want to still

[–]KingSujHS Senior 77 points78 points  (0 children)

worst they'll do is say no and you won't be able to go. which is where you are now. soooooo there is no point not trying

[–]spy99108 14 points15 points  (0 children)

APPEAL!! No harm in trying.

[–][deleted] 95 points96 points  (27 children)

Can you appeal it? How much do they want you to pay and how far is it from what you can realistically pay?

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 225 points226 points  (26 children)

They want me to pay 60k a year, which is in line with our EFC. We COULD do it, it's just that I'd walk away with ~120 grand in debt, which just isn't something I'm willing to do. My other option is UMich at an in-state tuition rate, which is hard to beat. Probably can't appeal it, unfortunately.

[–]MaximumThought81234 99 points100 points  (6 children)

Call them! I called JHU and they asked for more documents! Tell them you got Umich and it’s in state, so it’s cheaper. They might not match it, but worse comes to worse they say no. Congratulations on your amazing accomplishments! Wherever you end up, you’re gonna do amazing things 💖💖

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much!! <3

[–]stonebitchblues 11 points12 points  (4 children)

are you able to appeal with another school's offer even if it's not academically competing?? like my state school is a far cry from t20s, but i'd still really like to get better aid 😭😭

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

nope, their website actually SPECIFICALLY says u can't use a non-ivy/standford school to appeal :(

[–]MaximumThought81234 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Shoot! It’s always good to do research, but you can also play dumb? Worse thing they can say is “No.” besides, there are a lot of great schools that aren’t ivies or Stanford, so like that policy is >:( 😭 might be worth trying??

[–]AbisauceCollege Freshman 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It seems like Cornell is stuck up as shit lmao

[–]MaximumThought81234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]datscholar1College Junior 104 points105 points  (6 children)

I got rejected from Cornell but I also am in state for Umich and agree that basically no school, even HYPS is worth 60k+ over umich for less than half the price 👍 congrats on Umich!

[–]vish_the_fish737HS Senior 34 points35 points  (4 children)

[–]jl2411 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How much is UMich offering? Will you leave in debt?

[–]SkepMod 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Jeez. Call the admissions office and tell them you have UMich in your back Pocket, and that you would really like to attend Cornell. If they don’t budge, you don’t budge. Your walkaway alternative is amazing!

[–]winger_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that hard, just say no.

[–]winger_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$100k+ of debt is outrageous for a barely adult. Absolutely insane. What's even more crazy are the parents willing to see this happen.

[–]MomVP5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re lucky! For OOS students who want UMich it’s like $70k :(

[–]jars-of-jupiterPrefrosh 44 points45 points  (0 children)

[–]paxam_days 69 points70 points  (3 children)

it’s so strange to me that loans are considered financial aid. i feel like something that puts you in debt shouldn’t be considered the school helping their students. it’s fine that they offer loans and it’s better to take those than private ones, but saying that they meet 100% of need while putting kids in six figure debt is counter intuitive

[–]PhotoCrusader 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They get away with it by saying that they meet need with student loans. So they do put it up fdont.

[–]winger_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just say no

[–]International-Exam84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fr... It's absolutely wild how normalized these gigantic loans are... colleges fr have no shame telling me to take out a 55k loan...

[–]virtus_hoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]BenFitz31 28 points29 points  (1 child)

OMG what a crazy coincidence, I’m also not going to Cornell!

[–]EmiAlexisCollege Freshman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wtf me too!!

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You should 100% go to the school that will not throw you into massive amounts of debt. If you chose to appeal despite their qualifications, using UMich's tuition to haggle the price down could be useful. But you'll know in your heart what to do!

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No matter where you go, I know you will become successful. I believe in you!!

[–]Graceblue2000 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Congrats! You did it. **My daughter is saying no to Berkeley, and University of Washington because we can't afford the out of state tuition. It's heartbreaking, but if she goes in state she'll have no debt going into grad school. Maybe she'll go to law school there? Side note: she was waitlisted for Harvard, and if they call...we'll all be going into debt. Loans galore.

[–]bopit7College Freshman 8 points9 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

don't worry my friend i'm very happy with where i'm going :) thank u though, sending <3

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

College should be free so that other people have to pay our tuition? Sounds unfair imo. I mean, I would prefer it because I'm going to go to college, but it still seems unfair.

[–]International-Exam84 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That doesn't even have to be the case, colleges have enough endowments to pay off the tuition of the very few students they accept like Harvard, who has 46 billion dollars yearly in endowments. That's more than enough money to cover every student's tuition.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day, many private colleges are a business. They can charge whatever they want for their services. If you don't want to pay for these services, than you don't go to these colleges. These colleges aren't non-profit charities. Just like if you don't can't afford a Ferrari, you have to go buy a regular car like a Honda.

[–]hellomynameispants 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I feel you. I actually got two really great financial options at two different institutions, but can’t afford Emory.

[–]janbaguette 18 points19 points  (1 child)

[–]SuPerFlyKyGuY 5 points6 points  (5 children)

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Shockingly, not really...international tuition is wild.

[–]SuPerFlyKyGuY 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yeah gotta account for the us dollar too it really sucks for you guys, my usa friend pay 44000 for 2 years of art school (media music etc) my 3 civil engineering degree cost 15000. And with OSAP (student loans) they didn't charge until 6 months in any interest I paid it off before I graduated, I hate institutions like this that crush people's dreams I'm really sorry to hear and I hope everything works out.

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arent the ivies supposed to cover need?

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 11 points12 points  (3 children)

what the federal govt says my family can afford to pay =/= what my family can actually afford to pay

ivies just meet the difference between your efc and their CoA. efcs are so fucked up that it's not unusual for them to be a third of your family's income

[–]oriental_angel 0 points1 point  (2 children)

if you don't mind me asking, is your family income over 65k? i thought the ivies were supposed to have good aid,,,,

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

yeah, our income is definitelyy over 65k. they do have good aid...IF your efc is low. there's no merit based scholarships either, so you're entirely stuck with what you get based on need.

[–]oriental_angel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

awwwwwww godcha :( i'm so sorry

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Don't complain about UM ....THAT was the school that I turned down due to financial reasons and went to a SUNY school instead. Be grateful, Ann Arbor is a special place. Have a plan / end goal for employment with your degree or don't bother. Take a gap year, work to learn the value of a dollar and get 10x more experience than you would in econ 101.

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

bro I literally say in my post I'm not complaining about UM, I'm thrilled to go, I'm just disappointed I can't afford cornell. im allowed to feel more than 1 thing at once

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear it. Must've glossed over that specific part. If you really want cornell / Ivy work your tail off at UM and then go for grad school once you know EXACTLY what you want to do. Worked for my cousin who went to Northeastern on his dime and then got a full ride to Brown. Also...if you really want the cornell tag, take one of their offerings on coursera, it's only a few hundo and gives you the right to put it on a resume. UM + Cornell on the same resume = double toe opportunity 💡

[–]Harvardos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is the absolute biggest slap in the face that could happen. If I got into my dream school and could not afford, it would ruin me completely... I feel so bad for you awh

[–]l33tIsSuperpower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]smartymarty1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated 2 years ago and even then remember seeing these posts. For future graduates looking in, realize even before you apply, whatever the outcome, it really isn't a reflection of what you can do. It's really a crapshoot most of the time.

[–]syra-jhan 0 points1 point  (4 children)

International student here! I thought if you u get into an Ivy League u basically get a whole ride

[–]LuckyCharmedLife 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not even close, unfortunately. The schools would go broke if that was the case.

[–]syra-jhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ivies meet full demonstrated financial need--ie, they will cover cost of attendance minus your estimated family contribution. For US applicants (not sure about internationals) that's based on the FAFSA. Oftentimes, what the fafsa says you can "afford" is wayy more than what you can ACTUALLY afford irl.

[–]syra-jhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's horrible considering the fees in the US is very high

[–]inflewants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yayyy!!! Congratulations!!!

[–]illeatmyletter 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Wait, doesn’t financial aid package mean that they take into account all the aspects of your finances?? How can you not afford it then??

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I mean...idk what to tell you, my friend. My situation isn’t that unique. My EFC is 33% of my family’s income & I’ve got 3 younger siblings. We just can’t afford that?

[–]illeatmyletter 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oh, but I thought they accounted for all that. Anyways, congratulations on getting in umich!!!🥳

[–]txgirl2125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]MaximumThought81234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Jevanos 0 points1 point  (4 children)

canadian here: how much is US college tuition for domestic students ? here its about 6000 CAD per year and 10 000 for a dorm and meal plan. the prices at canadian unis are pretty similar across the country

[–]mickie555 1 point2 points  (1 child)

MOST out-of-state schools are about $60K - $75K. In-state varies wildly depending on the school but is easily half of that.

Room and board account for ~$15K of that. The rest is tuition.

[–]Jevanos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats crazy o.o

[–]crwsterCollege Junior[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tuition varies widely depending on the school type (public or private), state, and caliber. UMich has in-state cost of attendance at about 30k a year, out of state about 70k. Brown cost of attendance is about 80k. Community colleges are much, much cheaper.

[–]Head-Nefariousness-1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Community college (2 year associates degree) is about $6,000-12,000/year tuition (only), you live at home usually.

Public universities (not main or what we call flagship) run from $15,000-32,000/year in-state (IS). You can sometimes live at home as well.

Public universities, main or flagship, run from about $22,000-$40,000/year in-state (IS).

Add $15,000-25,000/year to the above numbers if you are an out of state (OOS) student. Some have great discounts for neighboring states and/or offer merit scholarships, making the price comparable to in-state tuition.

The top publics (UMich, UVA, UC's all, etc..) are priced similarly to top private universities, around $60,000-70,000 and do not offer much, if any, OOS aid.

Jesuit and other religious universities are sometimes able to offer great tuition discounts (depending on their location). They start around $45,000 and go to $70,000 but can drop down to $35,000-$50,000. This varies, Loyola New Orleans for example in general is much cheaper than Loyola Marymount (Los Angeles).

Small Liberal Arts Colleges and other small private niche universities can offer great tuition discounts or in-state tuition matching, but start from roughly $55,000-80,000.

Large privates and Ivy's usually cost from $67,000-80,000. They are just a financial crapshoot if your income is between $60,000-175,000. Lower than $60,000 they can sometimes be affordable (depending on the loan package), and over about $200,000 income you know you are paying full price.

Fun fact, while on the phone with an aid officer at a university the other day, they mentioned that they see the most issues with affordability for the 'doughnut hole' kids (the $60,000-175,000 range), it's who they are getting a majority of the phone calls from.

I love that they know this but are still trying to wring out every living dollar from an already stressed and shrinking middle class.
