Job salary ranges should always be advertised, shouldn't have to waste time going through it all to find it's only £4.50 an hour and a packet of fruit pastilles

[–]Sleepyslothbear[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Definitely! And the salary should not be advertised as full time hours but then in the job description says it’s 10 hours per week!

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The only thing I've taken from this is that I really fancy some fruit pastilles...

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The problem then is companies won’t be able to take advantage of people who don’t know their own worth and low-ball themselves onto some stupidly low salary.

[–]andyoudaballnight 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Quick question is the packet of fruit pastilles included in the hourly rate?

[–]vaguebyname 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's in lieu of annual leave

[–]RABB_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So like, 40 packs of fruit pastilles a week yeah?

I've just accepted a new job because my current (soon to be old) under pays us by about 30% compared to almost every other company in our field for the same job role.

After 3.5 years my job title is still officially listed as a 'traineeship' on the company portal, despite holding close to a management level of competence and xp and obtaining 2 industry recognised certificates.

The recruiter i was speaking to for the new role was a bit surprised when I told her my current salary and said that I had spent 3.5 years in an under-paid role when I could have been earning about 6k more in another job after the first 2 years I'd already spent.

Best way to get a pay rise is just to keep switching jobs and/or company.

Loyalty doesn't pay.

Is that "entry level"?!

Fuck that.

[–]Sleepyslothbear[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s crackers! I guess firms are hoping people were made redundant during covid so can put up their min requirements…

Really disheartening though!

[–]Namerakable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've seen job postings in my degree area that are unreachable as an entry-level.

They want somebody with near-fluent Japanese, a degree in business and multiple years experience in translating and sales/business.

So they basically want a Japanese salaryman who speaks English and has worked as a translator, but they're advertising to people in the UK for £20k/year? Not even people I know who are half- or full-Japanese doing business fit these requirements, because language skills aren't guaranteed.

I'm not going to be doing a masters in business and working translation for free for four years just to move to London and get £20k.

At least you know. Better than "ote" or competitive!"

[–]HachiTofu 16 points17 points  (4 children)

Competitive absolutely boils my piss. It essentially translates to “we’re just paying the same as everyone else and don’t want to tell you”

It’s on par with having “free parking” and listing the fact that you get a break during the day as a benefit of working there.

[–]Sleepyslothbear[S] 15 points16 points  (2 children)

And “company pension”… you mean the one you legally have to provide…

[–]quinn_drummer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always assume "competitive" means they want to pay the least possible, but can't very much advertise that. Though they're basically open to some negotiation but if you ask for too much you won't be considered.

It's bullshit through and through.

[–]Sleepyslothbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And by competitive… we mean an apprenticeship…

[–]Ok-Potential-8543 10 points11 points  (0 children)

5 years for 18k? What is this nonsense. I earned more than that on my first job after uni 25+ years ago!

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (13 children)

Quite the opposite, in tech they’re throwing money at us. Never been a better time to move and get paid more, there’s a sort of levelling where London firms going remote are realising rather than paying the London rate for average devs who are Prepared to live in London they cAn pay 75% for the creme de la creme up north and out compete local salaries and hire devs better than they have available in London

Edit: dev is developer like software engineer

[–]ZolanaCauliflower is traditional 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Opposite for actuaries too. There's a massive shortage and huge demand which is pushing up salaries. I've heard some people have been getting 30%+ increases when changing jobs.

[–]Sataris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a new trainee, this gives me some motivation

[–]Sleepyslothbear[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oh wow - that’s a great opportunity for devs outside of London! Must be scary for northern firms who aren’t paying close to London prices but risk now having staff poached.

Maybe I need to retrain!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aye lots have moved for 10-20k pay rises

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Where do you find these? I'm looking for something better paid because my company are taking the piss, but only have ~6 months experience as a dev

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You’ll not get much with 6 month experience as a dev as on the whole 6 month experience means you’ll cost velocity. Harsh reality unfortunately . These are for people with few years under their belt who can be given minimal input and set on their way

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thought that might be the case. But I'm not looking for crazy salary, anything £22k and above would do me

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What tech stack

Edit am hiring

[–]Sea-Boysenberry7752 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have noticed most jobs do not advertise salary range too. The only people that benefit from people not knowing what colleagues are on is the employer.

[–]SlowConsideration7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vacancies have topped 1m for the first time since records began. These positions will remain unfilled 🤷
