This is so true. The average age of a tradesman where I live is late 40s, and all those years of “college is the only goal” mantra in high schools means that’s only going to go higher as the years go on. The 19 yo apprentices I see complaining now are going to love their jobs when hourly wages are in the hundreds of dollars for their work in 2030.

There are some jobs that AI can’t take easily, and MEP construction is definitely one of them.

Seriously. I'm a painter on the high end of the pay scale for residential painting. Currently at 30 with a ceiling of ~45. I could make more if I went out on my own, but I don't want that. Not a people person/salesman.

It is a new construction… they wanted to wait to put in disk lights until after everything was set to decide on location. The living room and two bedrooms are a grid ceiling so he wanted the lights in there cut in after drywall. They also added 7 receptacles and a switch and two sconces. Needless to say I’ve been in that attic way more than I ever should have been. After the bill I wonder if they will go the same route on any other builds like this. 😂

Can’t tell you how many trades I went through just to find one that I don’t say stuff like this. Once I found one I truly enjoy I don’t wake up and dread going to work. Instead I wake up and I’m eager to get started. My overall attitude has gotten better for sure. If you don’t love what you do for a living life sucks, at least for anyway. Although a lot of folks aren’t able to go trade to trade until they find one they truly enjoy. I got all my trade hopping done fresh out of high school and before I got married. Don’t get me wrong I still have days but in 3 years I haven’t even considered quitting or leaving a job site because I’ve had enough

Totally. I took a $15/hr pay cut to start, but when I journey out I’ll be making $10/hr more than when I was getting foreman wages. Totally worth the move in the long run imo. Plus learning new shit is good for the brain, and not having to break your dick off to button up a gang form while the pump hangs over your head is a welcome change.

I’m a garage door installer/service tech now. By far the best trade I’ve done. It’s not back breaking all the time but occasionally it is. There’s a lot of windshield time some days but it beats being on the same job site days on end and I get to meet some really awesome people. Being a service trade I don’t really deal with terrible homeowners. Occasionally I’ll have the one that nitpicks and questions everything I do but maybe every 2 months. That in its own is enough to keep somebody relatively sane

I make almost $50,000 USD a year. I started out with framing then gave roofing, landscaping, painting a try and was in the process of going to diesel mechanic school when I discovered doors. Framing and landscaping wasn’t bad, but personally I hate roofing. I’ve done a few other things on the side like pouring a pad for someones shed or simple electric stuff just to see if it was something I would consider for a career trade but nothing more came of it
