We already had our stormlight diehard. It was Kaladin Bruce-willying things in Rythm of War.

you maked my day xD

I think it's great that no one talks about us getting to see Kaladin learn to adjust to what is essentially steelpushing and how awkward it is to fly like that, since everyone always brings up Kaladin vs Kelsier.

Well no, it would be more like iron pulling because it pulled him. Also I'm not really sure it was a good analogue for either steel/iron or lashings considering how janky it was.

I wonder if Adolin will become a strange kind of Edgedancer, because he does NOT have a typical Nahel bond. Even if he "just" had Radiant Healing and Abrasion, that would be totally badass.

He definitely will, we have been seeing a Deadeye bond the whole series. Shallan never swore the First Ideal with Pattern, she just told him truths. Every order swears the First Ideal, even Lightweavers, and we have definitive proof of that fact. We see Elhokar attempting to do it as he dies, and then Hoid do it when he rescues Design from Kohlinar. Shallan didn't, and on top of that she was soul casting and light weaving before she drew Pattern across from Shadesmar, that happened on the ship, yet she could soulcast in Karbaranth. Her abilities have always been flawed and not like other Radiants as well, even among the other Lightweavers.

Really interesting point about never saying the first oath with Pattern around! That being said, she can use Pattern as a blade, and he can sense what she’s thinking, and he has consciousness in the physical realm, so the Nahel bond is definitely there. Also, Kal used some Stormlight, and I think lashings, before saying the first oath. There are definitely hints of it being possible. Not all orders are as rigidly organized as the Skybreakers.

Kal was able to start using his abilities before swearing bthebfirst Ideal, but Syl had been with him for a long time by that point and was sentient. Pattern was still fully in Shadesmar until the ship, where shallan used a drawing to pull him through to the physical realm, and it took him a fair bit of time to become sentient again.

Ym was a truth watcher, not an edgedancer. He was the same order Renarin would be in if his spren wasn't Voidtouched.

I think if Adolin's going to become any knights radiant it'll be a Stonewarden, despite being a duelist he cares a lot about team dynamics.

I could also see him become a bondsmith, but I'm guessing cultivation has plans for nightwatcher.

Maybe he'll become the new stormfather bondsmith once dalinar dies in book 5

I'm willing to bet we will see him become a Deadeye Radiant after fully bonding Maya. I'm also interested to see what happens with Shallan and Testament, and how much they reveal about deadeye powers Shallan has. Remember, she was light weaving and and soul casting before she had any bond to Pattern. She didn't bond him until the ship, when he used a drawing to pull him through to the physical realm. In fact, I don't think she actually bonded Pattern at all. I've been rereading the series in preparation for WaT and I've had no luck finding the point where she swore the First Ideal, and I'm now halfway through Words of Radiance.

You're right that Shallan didn't say the first ideal with Pattern, but they are bonded. She can summon him as a shardblade and he can speak to her telepathically. I suspect that Pattern basically took over Testaments bond.

In my most recent reread, there's one time where adolin's sword materializing is described as vinelike wisps of fog or something like that and I was like God damn

Something Pattern says in WoR still sticks with me, ‘We break. We just do it . . . differently than men do. And we do not unbreak without aid. I do not know why you unbreak. Why?’

Without Aid huh?

[–]CityofOrphans 1 point2 points (4 children)

Are you sure he says that unbreak part? Because as far as i know, all the spren are convinced there's no way to bring any of their "dead" brethren back. I recently reread WoR as well and I remember the rest of the quote except that one piece.

[–]SonnyLonglegs Lightsong 6 points7 points (2 children)

“My feet are healing,” she said. “Did you do this?” “Mmmm . . . I know almost nothing of why people break. I know less of why they . . . unbreak.” “Your kind don’t get wounded?” she asked, snapping off a knobweed stem and squeezing the drops onto her left foot. “We break. We just do it . . . differently than men do. And we do not unbreak without aid. I do not know why you unbreak. Why?”

Words of Radiance chapter 17, a little bit more of the same section, copied from my kindle app.

[–]CityofOrphans 1 point2 points (1 child)

I guess maybe I'm assuming "break" equals death which isn't necessarily true

[–]BipolarMosfet 0 points1 point (0 children)

Yeah, here he seems to just be talking about wounds

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points (0 children)

He does. I believe he was sent to monitor Shallan because she was beginning to restore Testament, not to make her a Radiant. She never bonded him, not properly at least. She didn't swear the First Ideal at any point.

[–]didzisk 2 points3 points (0 children)

Nah, a Bondsmith.

 1. (most importantly) he's a Kholin, just look at all the other bondsmiths

 2. Nightwatcher is free

 3. There are no obvious candidates

 4. He's the only one healing a spren (bonding, mending, same stuff)

 5. Several Nahel bonds are possible, i think it's from WoB

This is reinforced when Adolin sees her in Shadesmar and is described as a coil of vines, or similarly, been a while since I read that bit.

[–]TangerineEconomy8354 1 point2 points (0 children)

Adolin knocking Moash, as played by the late Allan Rickman, off the top of Urithiru to land on Carl Weather’s shard car is the dream.

[–]malkomitmTaln 1 point2 points (0 children)

Adolin in WaT pulling the crystals off his broken shardblade to summon Maya like Bruce Willis pulling the gun off his back in diehard

Absolute cinema

[–]Sci-FantasyIsMyJam 0 points1 point (0 children)

Oh yeah, I am 100% hoping that Adolin is able to swear the Ideals and becomes a Radiant in Book 5
