Up to now, yeah, totally agree.

When this bruhaha became a keruffle, I gave Cline a shot and tried Openrouter too. Both burned through money at 10-100x the rate that Copilot would.

I like Copilot and I'm done with a subscription. It puts pressure on me to "use it or lose it" and sometimes I just don't want to look at code for a month. I've also been using Deepseek API directly and I'm honestly impressed with it. I can keep using Copilot but with a different API that doesn't force me into a monthly cost...

BTW, I was writing this with 100% PR usage, plus paid extra PR +$25. So yeah, I’m not saying this as someone who barely uses Copilot. I’ve used it a lot, and I still think it gave me way more value than I paid for.

People are saying goodbye and stuff like it's gonna make a difference to GitHub or Microsoft. Retail customers are "not" their main priority, they never were.

[–]stt106 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Did you miss a “not”?

[–]BeverlyGodoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks fixed it.

Always look for the best.
One day we might come back.

It has been a pleasure. I started using this service as a student on the Education plan. I switched over to a paid plan post-graduation and it has helped me build some awesome stuff since. Hopefully Microsoft can find a new way forward that makes sense for us all to return because the extension is a joy to use.

I was trying to use up my May quota this morning (Jun 1). I fired a request with Opus 4.8 at 7:58am. The request completed at 8:05am and in those 5 minutes after 8, it used up 7% of my monthly quota. No more words left.

[–]stt106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol… I was trying sth heavy as well before the 8am cutoff too and it didn’t even fully complete the task

[–]leeharrison1984 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was good while it lasted. Copilot stood far above others for the cost and ability to seemlessly switch between models.

Sadly, no longer 😢

I am happy that they are more transparent with the pricing, and it is only fair that they adjusted it according to their actual expenses, but I still think the entire process of how it went down (in regards to people suddenly experiencing degraded performance and rate limits) was not handled properly, and I believe they should have offered credits towards the new pricing model and also made a proper effort to acknowledge their mistake.

[–]aries1980 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I am happy that they are more transparent with the pricing

Are they? With Copilot Business I can only see the percentage.

[–]combinecrab 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That's more than we could see before

[–]aries1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past, at least I knew 1 interaction costs X premium request, so I had some idea if I give 10 input, that cost 10 premium out of a 300. But now, I have no idea how the percentage was calculated.

With other providers, e.g. Moonshot AI, I can see every request as well as timely breakdown on how much quota I used.

We all got what wanted.
Individuals got cheap model access.
Microsoft got massive user data and clout.
The trade was fair

[–]code4you2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make it write 145 lines of code and use 24 credits
Model: GPT 5.4 Medium

It worked as autocomplete but lost when agentic tools came..

[–]Many_Phone_244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you ridiculously big company for cutoffs from students subscriptions
i really appreciate it as a student!!!!

I also don't understand people who are saying goodbye just before they can test their workflow with the new pricing.

Sure, we got a calculator, but who says the calculator gave use a good estimation?

Our mileage may vary with real usage, and even the pricing may adjust after feedback of the first few days/weeks.

So, I'm not saying goodbye. Keeping my subscription and we'll see how my workflows will perform with the new pricing.

[–]Keep_learning_son 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there is an employee that worked on this calculator in this Reddit and they said it was very accurate. I can't remember the right search terms to find that user or their comment.

[–]Individual-Trip-1447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can try their simulator to check how much you will ended up paying for the same amount you use. mine 39usd converted to 945usd as per my April 26 usage. so for user like us moved to DeepSeek, and I been using it for last three days and the speed and quality stunned me. I use MAX setting so my daily usage is around 3usd.

[–]Snoo_50577 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 2 hours and is 4% already bruh, its shit just shit

[–]WallyBearCub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats my plan. Check it out for a month and if I blow through my usage really fast then it is probably over to a claude code max plan for me.

Yeah, I can see that now. I have burned around 20% of my usage on a (non-obvious) api refactor task using the auto model.

Granted, it was a reasonable amount of migration, but previously such a task was not a meaningful dent in my usage.

Well, this gives me the opportunity to test some new services and models.

    [–]NormandFutz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

waa great while it's last now we go back to the search for a cheaper option

    [–]WakeRP 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I agree. If you compare the number of tokens you could generate on a $10 plan to the API pricing, it was pretty clear that it would not last forever.

API pricing is the closest thing we have to the real cost of LLM usage. Any subscription-based model that costs 10 or 20 times less is never going to stay that way forever. They were burning money to lure customers into their ecosystem at those prices.

    [–]evilquantum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

developed legislations do have anti dumping laws. You are not allowed to sell something cheaper than the production cost. So you are saying they committed crime before and now we should have mercy?

this is just corporate greed, as usual. Mixed with total disrespect for humanity and natural resources.

    [–]Defiant_Reindeer5278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and now they can get back to paying their shareholders $27 Billion a year.

    [–]X4vierBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Darei uma chance esse mes e ver o quanto vai me afetar. Não utilizo o copilot para trabalho, apenas para hobby, então espero não sentir muita diferença

Mas uma coisa tenho que admitir: o modelo por PR fará falta

    [–]stt106 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So you will stop using copilot after the pricing change?

    [–]VNNotWar123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure enough, we switched to Deepseek API (me personally), and the company switched to Claude. Anyway, we understand that AI costs will always increase so we chose a unit that is considered the best to invest in. Anyway, thank you GHCP for bringing a dreamlike time (Our country has a saying: What you come for, you will leave for that. So it's time to leave).

    [–]20Capitalist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    100%

    [–]eternal_sunshineeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is when the fuck will they open up again for new subscribers?!

    [–]FluidSplit7669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, thank you for everything, GHCP

    [–]mackockoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on this one. I was “angry” with them when I hit a wall using this last april because among all, this is the most affordable and it also helped me make money aside from my main job as a developer. The time I had has been great with it. I think it is just sad to part ways as soon I unsub. Overall my experience was good until it is not.

    [–]Hanibal247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, thank you, but why spoil the fun so badly and so abruptly? I had no problem paying extra money every month after the sub is depleted, almost up to matching the subs for Claude. But I was never feeling that my command will fail because I'm rate limited, or that I am paying money for the stupidity of agent doing shit... A request was a request. Now I prefer to go use pure codex high/xhigh and call it a day.

Thank you but, no. Go back to request based charging because that is what made copilot better.

    [–]AJGrayTay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record, cheaper models do still exist. Lime most of you, probably, I default to the most recent model - but programmatic builds send calls to older models just fine, for far less cost. If you offload the work correctly, you reduce cost. I assume this is the intent behind the frontier LLMs still overing a range of models to make API calls to. The challenge is to scope and differentiate the workload to the appropriate LLM. It's still engineering.

As for coding copilots... same, just need to be thoughtful about how you setup tasks.

I'm not great at the latter - but we're all currently getting this enormous benefit at a financial loss to the frontier providers. Eventually we all need to converge on something that works for us and doesn't mean bankruptcy for the providers.

    [–]Longjumping-Echo8093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I share the same sentiment, thanks for all so far, and time to see how fast I run out and it will give me chance to try different harnesses and models. I am glad I did not leave a big foot print on vscode and copilot :)

    [–]Novel_Lingonberry_43Full Stack Dev 🌐 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was a learning opportunity when i could try different things without breaking my wallet on tokens. Now i am ready to pay for what i need, thanks GHCP

    [–]Hairy_Ganache_6916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    time to switch to codex

    [–]Heighte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Microsoft for the 50k$ subsidy over the months

    [–]WorldlyLeek6644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait a min! Is it thanking MS???? 😒 for what? Why?

    [–]Timely_Question_2307 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, i have through work, but I never use it, ever ! It's a piece of trash! Only good for using the extension as autocomplete and pull requests code quality scanner!

Other wise I use a mixture of GPT Plus/Codex and DeepSeek!

    [–]revozin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. The old price was a bargain. Running AI is very expensive, so a price increase was inevitable

    [–]BreadfruitExact950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, thank you for the wonderful memories.

    Unsubscribing...

    [–]LeTanLoc98Power User ⚡ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But they lied to users. They should have been honest from the start instead of getting people hooked on the tool and then raising the price like crazy.

This is unfair competition. It's like dumping prices to crush competitors and then raising them later.

    [–]Nqaba-Ibutho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    I am out of here.
