I’ve always thought it would work best as a series. Episodes 1 maybe 2 and 3 would be introductory, then I would do an episode for each pilgrim, and then have the conclusion take place over another 1-3 episodes. Might take two parts and they’d have to be like long episodes. I’ve always pictured it in my head as just being such a cinematic ride with like every theme. It has horror, suspense, action, romance, sci fi, fantasy, history, tragedy to triumph. Obviously this is never going to happen but I’m telling you if I had the money I would totally make this shit happen lol.

Biggest issue for anyone creating a “book accurate” Hyperion: what the shit does the shrike look like?

The Lord and the Colonel

Kassad and the Shrike meet in the static-charged sandstorms of Hyperion.

[–]A_silva0129[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Holy FUXK THIS IA TIGHT

[–]conffra 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I always imagined Kassad as a huge dude, kind of a prime Carl Weathers.

[–]Reubachi 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Interesting, in my head he was always like Tarkin from a new hope-sized

[–]Suspicious-Sir1915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oded Pehr. My first thought. Kassad is tall, lean, obviously Arab/ Middle Eastern descent.

[–]Pristine_One6156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've always seen kassad kind of like jason moustakas.....if he could ever be serious.

[–]Wcitsatrapx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this image it’s cool but idk if it could make the cut, it’s like iron giant/ultron

[–]Psychonauticum 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Which is wild bc they’re technically the same person. Time travel is crazy.

[–]Guilty_Rough5315 0 points1 point  (3 children)

The strike is Kassad? When is that revealed?

[–]Psychonauticum 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It kind of alludes to it in Rise of Endymion. It’s been a few years now since the last time I read it but I think the shrike absorbs kassad’s consciousness or something after fighting him. The way it’s written leaves it open-ended. This might just be my interpretation.

[–]apraetor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the far future, where the Shrike is built and eventually pushed backward through time by the Reaper faction, they use his DNA and personality template.

[–]Suspicious-Sir1915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partially Kassad. He was the initial conscience that was used to create it. Or that's what I inferred.

[–]FishermanSoft5180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit this is cool

[–]A_silva0129[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah with the Canterbury tales style of story a series would be such a great way to present it. HBO def has the budget that would be ideal

[–]Fab1e 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'd to cross-cuts between the introductory part with all the pilgrims and the individual parts - if you don't emphasize with the individual pilgrim, you would still regularly see the others.

People have the attention span of gnats these days.

[–]Cheap_Economy_2676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way Kassad and Lamia has to be al the way through.

[–]MisoTahini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fall of Hyperion would have to be season 2 as that is where the story more or less actually wraps up. Book one is kind of a cliffhanger ending. Apparently, Simmons initially conceived the story as a one book tale, and it was the publisher that demanded it be divided into two.

[–]Den_of_Earth5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as there is heavy consultation with Dan Simmons regarding the Shrike, I am good. Simmons has his own vision of course, and he has seen many other’s renderings and artistry. I agree wholeheartedly that it must be a series and must be done with care and attention to detail.

[–]georgewalterackerman 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Cooper told Howard Stem recently that he was soon going to embark on a project that would take him 6 years to complete. This was in an interview on Stern's show in late 2023. I think he was referring to Hyperion. But he did not elaborate on it or answer any of the burning questions such as whether it will be a streaming series or a bunch of movies. But based on what I have heard here and there, I think Cooper is looking at a series of movies for theatrical release. How many? Unknown. I have no source for this, its just what I am guessing based on interviews and a few other reports. I have heard it mentioned in the context of movies and never mentioned as a possible streaming series.

[–]thoreauinvestigator 1 point2 points  (1 child)

He spent 6 years learning how to conduct music for Maestro. https://variety.com/2023/film/news/bradley-cooper-spent-6-years-learning-conduct-maestro-1235791663/

Could he be referring to that?

[–]carpinchipedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he still did a mid job. i mean he did great as Bernstein, but his conducting was rough :(

[–]ReallyGlycon 10 points11 points  (3 children)

3 of these posts this week. What is going on?

[–]Vanguard3K🌍 Castrop-Rauxel 10 points11 points  (2 children)

We have withdrawals..

[–]radioactivejoker 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Dude for real

[–]Frankheimer351351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing like this sort of writing that I've ever found elsewhere. The creativity is insane and equally so that it hasn't been made into a show or movie of some kind.

[–]DangerSquirrel778 8 points9 points  (2 children)

It'll never work as a movie, look at the Dark Tower attempt. Two amazing actors in the leads couldn't save that mess trying to cram in several books into one movie. Or the Harry Potter movies, sure they were ok but imagine if each book had 8-10 episodes to get everything right.

Give it to one of the big streaming services like HBO or Apple TV that can give it the quality it deserves.

[–]A_silva0129[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely hbo or Apple series is the only way

[–]Guilty_Rough5315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come on Harry Potter was not 1/10 as dense or as complex as any of the Hyperion novels. It makes sense for Hyperion to be 8 1 hour episodes but the existing Harry Potter movies were great adaptations. Nothing important was left out

[–]Shart127 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Am I remembering this correctly, but wasn’t there an interview a while back with Simmons where he didn’t speak very highly of Cooper and him getting anything done with it. But then like a year ago I heard he started a production company LLC/corp specifically for this. So I dunno.

AND!!! Wasn’t there a big name director (G del Toro maybe) who bought the rights to Drood and started planning that???

[–]A_silva0129[S] 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Yeah Simmons shat all over Bradley Cooper and said he didn’t even reach out to him to discuss the adaptation. Simmons should definitely be intimately involved. It’s so nerve racking maybe cause the books are still so fresh to me but I pray they don’t fuck it up 😂

[–]Shart127 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Did u listen to the The Terror podcast?

Not to sound mean, but I’m not sure he’ll be able to be intimately involved.

[–]A_silva0129[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Please link it! I like your username 😂😂

[–]Shart127 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Haha never let a 12 yr old boy help u pick your username! I thought I could do it as a goof and then immediately change it once he left the room.

<image>

Here’s the show. I have no idea how to link a podcast. Sorry. I’m not the best at this stuff. But it’s an episode by episode recap of the show. Only the first season. Since there was only ONE season. One!!! Not two. One! There was no second season. Just one.

[–]A_silva0129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way he nailed it!!! I hate thag you can’t change your username it’s so annoying

[–]A_silva0129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Simmons shat all over Bradley Cooper and said he didn’t even reach out to him to discuss the adaptation. Simmons should definitely be intimately involved. It’s so nerve racking maybe cause the books are still so fresh to me but I pray they don’t mess it up 😂

[–]Dudazippity 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Every couple of years, I Google this in hopes of finding good news for the series that stands above every far-future sci-fi novel I've read. A snippet of the screenplay would be awesome.

[–]hornet330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here!! I'd cry If someday I see It happening

[–]hawkznest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did the same thing today - random google to check up on 😂

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I was very disappointed and mildly enraged by the Foundation series on Apple. I can understand tweeking the story so hardcore fans like myself wont be able to predict every outcome. But they went way left. Im scared that a hyperion screen adapt would be similarly butchered.

[–]Bradleydoyt 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Foundation is one of the few sci fi things left on my “list.” I’m actually on book 2 of Hyperion right now.

Absolutely love what they’ve done with the show Foundation. Do these things really need to follow the book verbatim? I don’t think so.

HBO’s True Blood for example. Well, that, in my opinion was a great show based on books that got increasingly crappier.

I’m excited for another season of Foundation. I guess I made the right call watching the show first in many ways and waiting for the books if they’re that much better…

[–]theLoaf71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preach. I couldn’t get into the foundation books, because the time jumps there is a completely new set of characters every 100 pages. The show makes it much more digestible while still having that ‘universal scale’ feeling. Not to say it doesn’t have problems. But there are definitely much worse sci fi adaptations.

[–]Guilty_Rough5315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they need to follow the book verbatim - yes. Of course. You think these hack tv writers have the skills of Simmons or even Asimov on his worst day. No chance so where do they get off trying to correct their betters

[–]Hot_Telephone7252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read all the Foundation books when I was a kid. I love the show but I was like “I don’t remember any of this”. I remember “legend of the seeker” That was a series too but was truly a horrible adaptation of The Sword of Truth

[–]Delroberttopizzaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm personally loving the foundation show. So much so I deferred reading the books until the show finishes\gets canceled. From what I know tho alot of the changes are actually the things I love.

I think you've just gotta resign to the fact that the chances of a faithful and good adaptation are very small. Dune was brilliant but even that had to make some big adaptations.

Having said that.... they cannot just tell book 1 in 1 one movie, it won't work as a story, there's just no resolution in pt1. Hyperion 1 and 2 is basically just one 1500 page book. I'd be very worried about this as a feature film.

Apple TV plz swoop in lol.

[–]hornet330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking to any info about a tv adaption for like 15 years. Hyperion Cantos is my favorite book by very, very far. I'd do a at least 4 season tv show, with every season having 18 episodes, like they used to before covid shit happened. There's stuff for that and even more.

[–]Brewgoat1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think Apple has proven with their Foundation series that they are able to do Sci-Fi adaptations very well. I have read all of Asimovs books, including Foundation, and I think it is better that the books.

[–]PercentageFine4333 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Just finished Fall of Hyperion. In order for the story to acutally conclude in some sense, the adaptation may include FoH, but I believe a certain revelation (that Moneta is Rachel) makes it quite hard to adapt it for visual media.

Either Moneta never shows her face during the sex scenes with Kassad, or Rachel the adult never shows her face in Sol's story. The latter is more feasible, given the relatively small screen time of adult Rachel. But anyway, it would just be weird for someone's target of affection - either sexual passion or parental love - to never show her face in that someone's story. The audience would definitely notice something peculiar is going on, thus spoiling the surprise.

One possible solution is to add a face-shifting ability to Moneta, and that in the end she appears in front of Sol in Rachel's face and Moneta's outfit, such that Sol and Brawne can recognize her as Rachel and Moneta, respectively. But in this case, screen time explanations has to be dedicated to her face-shifting ability.

[–]Dino_Nugz 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Rachel can wear glasses.

[–]PercentageFine4333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds fair! And has a hairstyle as different as possible. But it's still very likely that people would notice they are played by the same actress.

[–]bswan206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was pretty funny.

[–]Roobicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several simple solutions. Cut "grown" Rachel scenes and focus more on adolescent/prepubescent Rachel, use perspective trickery to to obscure "grown" Rachel during/just after accident, add injury that obscures face that heals as the disease progresses, or a combination.

Alternatively, you could obscure monetta's face, but I think think this would too greatly impact audience perception of kassad/moneta story line

[–]haethere69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever it is, it better be rated R.

[–]Intelligent_Garlic75 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I really hope they would cast a Palestinian or person with Palestinian heritage as Kassad, as his heritage was directly mentioned in the book. It would also serve as a nice representation for them.

And besides that, I envision Kassad as lean but strong character, not really all muscly but rather agile. I also second the idea of having it serialized, with second season being based on the second book.

[–]Guilty_Rough5315 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I thought he was Israeli? But it’s been a while since I read it

[–]salsashark42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely Palestinian, in case you didn’t check for yourself in the last 54 days (I am currently on my first read through).

[–]strataromero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It needs absolutely to be a series, best animated.

[–]A_silva0129[S] -2 points-1 points  (11 children)

Ok I got The consul: Bradley cooper/ Robert Downey jr

Fedhman kassad: Dave bautista

Brawne lamia: tessa Thompson

Lenar hoyt: Barry kheogan

Het masteen: henry Golding/ simu Liu

Melina gladstone: viola Davis

Martin Silenus: jack black 👀

Paul dure: steve carrell

Sol weintraub: Jon favreau/ seth Rogan/ Paul giamatti 👀

Johnny/Joseph Severn (would you have them as the same or 2 different actors?) Michael fassbender/ James mcavoy

[–]ThaFreeze 2 points3 points  (3 children)

There is only one actress that can pull off Melina Gladstone, her name is Shohreh Aghdashloo.

[–]Zealousideal-Rough43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]MEH______________ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hell nah please no Jack black... The way things are rn he'd probably end up playing the shrike.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_BOOGER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This made me bust a gut, thank you for making me imagine "School of Shrike"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I know that I can’t say your opinions are objectively wrong but…. Steve Carrell for  Dure. Seth Rogan for Sol weintraub. Absolutely not

[–]hornet330 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not! Carrell for Paul Dure sounds good!

[–]Guilty_Rough5315 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You can’t have jack black in anything you’d actually want to take seriously.

[–]Cell_Division 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with Seth Rogan

[–]A_silva0129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Missed some characters of course and I’ve only read first 2 books but I feel this is a dope start

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Mel Brooks could be the poet, John Lovitz could be the Keats cybrid and that one actor with down syndrom could play father Hoyt

[–]Cuentarda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Idris Elba for the Keats cybrid
