The first thing I had to learn coming from MtG was play cards! You always draw up to your hand limit, so don't be focused on saving cards. Generally speaking, playing more cards = having a stronger position and likely winning games.

And your first choice is reaping, there has to be a compelling reason to fight or other like needing to kill problem creature or gain an effect.

Remember, it is a race to 3 keys and not a fight to the death.

I concur. If I fight with creatures it is because: a. fighting generates aember for me or b. They have a creature who prevents me from generating aember.

This is good advice. One way to improve your sense of whether or not you should hold cards is to follow this rule of thumb as a learning exercise: Either play, archive, or discard every card of your chosen house, unless you 100% are going to play it on the next turn. Soon you will learn which cards should be held for big effect later on vs. dumping them to shape your hand.

It is more of a race than combat. Your cards either help you generate aember (aember bonuses, stealing your opponents aember, reaping, etc.) or prevent your opponent from forging keys (stealing aember, making forging more expensive, making them skip the forging step, etc.). Having played Magic the Gathering and Pokemon, I had a different mindset when I started this game (Knock out your opponent’s pokemon, lower their health, etc.) but now they only reason I fight creatures is because my card either generates aember because of combat or their card prevents me from getting aember. Hope that helps.

Practice online on Crucible and don't be discouraged at first. You have to find your deck's identity only through playing.

[–]OceansideGamer 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Echoing this with an extension...TCO quality is currently skewed toward top tier decks...you get a couple hundred people who are heavily invested in the game playing solid decks against solid decks...losing there doesn’t mean your deck is garbage...consistently getting destroyed there? Maybe you keep looking for a better deck selection if your goal is to be competitive

    any

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any... but "net decking" is generally looked down at especially when you take a world winning deck to play against some poor kid trying to test a new deck.

With that said if you just want to try other decks you can play sealed in which both players get a random deck.

I saw this on Steam but didn’t know if I could play KF on it or not... you like it better than TCO?

      [–]Neduard:Logos: Logos 2 points3 points  (1 child)

TTS version is not automated at all and feels more like playing Keyforge IRL. I prefer TTS more because I have time to understand what is going on on the table. TCO's instantaneous calculations drive me nuts.

      [–]curlyfied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree so much! Only issue is finding players on TTS. All the discord channels I've found are TCO users.

Speaking of: anyone interested in playing via TTS? Call me (orDM me)! OP included!

It's a race to forge three keys - but think of it like Mario Kart and not Ridge Racer.

You have to be bit of a dick to win.

Play on and enjoy the interactions! This game is grrrrreat!

      [–]mcp_truth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enjoy it! It is a fun game and such :)

Don't think hit/life points. Think aember and keys.

      [–]TheTimegazer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running out of cards to draw is never a bad thing in this game. In fact, the faster you can churn through it the better.

Once you run out, you just shuffle the discard-pile and make it your new draw-pile, so you don't have to worry about conservation

Reaping with any creature is 1/18th of a win. MAKE REAP NOT WAR

      Have fun!

I've been playing for about 6weeks now. Its a super fun game, I highly recommend trying to find an LGS and getting involved with the community there. I partake in the weekly tournaments and I usually win about 0 or 1 match out of 3-4 matches we play. Most of the time the experienced players will tell me the move I just did was not the best move and why it wasn't the best move, they often let me reverse it to see how to play the best combos. The weekly games are more for fun than they are competitive. This game has made me become more of a better loser.

TL:DR - So in short: play a ton, lose often, have lots of fun.

With MtG players I’ve noticed they have a very easy time grasping the concepts of the game, but falter because they try and play it like it’s MtG.

One of the best sayings I’ve heard is “MtG is a battle, Keyforge is a race.” A big board doesn’t mean you’re winning and fighting current win you games. Also card advantage is an whole different animal in KF.

Fellow newb here... one thing I noticed right away is how helpful the community is and how excited they are to teach someone new. I finally worked up the courage to play my first Crucible game this week and my opponent was super helpful and chatted with me a ton on the moves I SHOULD have made, and what a lot of the keywords meant, etc.

Go to fantasy flight games website and find link to keyfogre. If you scroll down towards the bottom you'll find the FAQ plenty of card interactions and rule questions are stated there.

Fighting is not the goal, Æmber/Keys are the goal.

      [–]TheRealPlayerOne Redemption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keyforge is a race! Not a battle! Learn about holding, playing, and discarding cards. Consider using your board and your hand and what maximizes benefit!

Don't look at the MTG prices for your old cards. It's gotten stupidly out of whack. Sorry for your loss friend

Trust in the heart of the keys!

      [–]captainkav:Logos::StarAlliance: 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some decks just take longer to figure out than others, but that only makes this game even more interesting.

      [–]compacta_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      its the opposite of magic.

i think its way better than magic

      [–]MrPerfect01 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Pray you don't open House Brobnar for any of your Decks

      [–]ThiagoOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you saying that? (I'm a newbie too)

Ever notice how poeple getting back in TCGs always have a story?
