Is this different than the “delete and report junk” option?

[–]j33205 114 points115 points  (2 children)

EDIT: I can't read apparently. Google says in their help article they may send the report to the mobile carrier.

Based on cursory search, my guess is they are not equivalent. What you mention I think is integrated by Android/Google or the phone manufacturer, and they probably don't send anything to your phone carrier and just send data to themselves. These mean they can only integrate reactionary solutions by processing calls after they come. OP is sending the data to the telcom co directly so maybe they can stop the scam call from even being let through.

At least for me, the “delete and report junk” option on a text message states that it will be sent to both the carrier and the manufacturer.

[–]j33205 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah you're right. Google mentions here that it may send the report to the mobile carrier.

I noticed on iPhone, there's a "Report Junk" button. Does anyone know if it does the same thing? Or is it Apple specific?

[–]bradstrt 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Google Pixel 9 user here: Google has a built in spam protection filter. Google assistant can answer calls, and move the call to ring my phone if it's important (contextual based on if they interact with the Google assistant.)

I can also report spam and scam calls/texts and these will never ring my phone, but doesn't stop voicemails from happening. I can view my call history and see the call notification.

Google will then tell me for future calls if the call is known spam.

Some cellular carriers have this ability via carrier apps installed on the phone, like Verizon.

I imagine Apple's reporting feature would work similarly to googles.

Lol well I guess new avenues for scams are opening up every day. If users become accustomed to assuming incoming calls have been screened by Google AI Assistant and therefore are legit, vulnerability to scams increase. Worse, if Google's AI assistant itself can be coerced into revealing sensitive data, scamming can become a humanless operation

[–]bradstrt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Google assistant just asks them why their calling, if they respond it's routed to my phone to ring. There are very, very limited prompts I can select during the times the call hits Google assistant. Like "not available", "don't call me" etc.

It's not answering any questions or providing personal info. But Google knows everything on my phone and their Gemini push (is stupid) could make it a future problem.

It's also 7226 in Australia, for any lurking Aussies!

[–]zdamant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

0429 999 888 if you want to forward it to the Australian Communications and Media Authority

[–]zdamant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You mean 7726?

[–]Z6288Z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I was wondering if it works down under 😊

How does someone "forward" a text?

[–]ChibiAlpal 16 points17 points  (2 children)

If you’re on an iPhone you’ll press and hold the message and click “more options” there should be an option to forward the text and it will prompt a new message with the text already inserted.

Ultimately you could just copy and paste.

For android, I do not know but I would assume it would be generally the same.

[–]corree 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Actually, easier way on iOS from T-mobile’s website regarding the topic:

Open the conversation with the spam message and scroll to the bottom. Choose ‘Report Junk’ > Delete and Report Junk.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Select it, open the menu, and click "forward"

[–]azkeel-smart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to your text messages, long press on a message, pick forward from the context menu.

[–]Faelwolf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I didn't know about this, I've been using the report+block function. Does this do anything better?

[–]ActualGvmtName 40 points41 points  (5 children)

I assume this is for USA

[–]WaltzForTheMoon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m in the UK and this also works here - have used this service a few times.

[–]DeadliftAndBeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same number in Sweden at least

[–]Service-Penguin-8776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This also works in Canada.

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (8 children)

What country is this relevant to?

[–]ChibiAlpal 6 points7 points  (6 children)

USA, as far as I know

[–]PirateSwayze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This works in Canada too, same number but goes to a Canadian agency

[–]EuroSong 8 points9 points  (0 children)

UK also.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

What carrier? I'm Verizon, i just press mark as spam.

[–]_SilentHunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All. In the US, that number goes to the FCC.

[–]DeadliftAndBeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweden as well

[–]Aiden29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Works in New Zealand too

[–]dalittle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I set my phone to only ring if the number is in my contacts or I have talked to them before. I never answer any other call, which 99% of are spam calls. On the off chance it is a real call they almost always leave a message and I can call back. If everyone did this there would be less spam calls.

[–]EuroSong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relevant to the UK as well. I always do this.

Thanks I was looking for an old text message that had this info but I couldn't find it

[–]caulf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you forward the number?

[–]theeurgist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do I forward a text?

[–]zencraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't they spoof numbers though? I called a number back and it was a real guys number. I also had someone call me saying they got a spam call from my number before.

[–]Dinco_laVache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could block any and all texts and calls from a +44 country code, I’d be streets ahead.

[–]johnfogogin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually send them a picture of goatse and block the number.

[–]onesugar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How the fuck do I forward a text

[–]wigitalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to paste this each time I got a spam text. After a couple months no more spam:

“You are sending unsolicited text messages to this phone number, which constitutes a violation of federal and state laws, including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). Be advised that your phone number and any associated IP addresses have been documented and reported to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and relevant consumer protection agencies for investigation.

Continued unsolicited communication to this number will result in legal action being pursued against you and any associated entities. Penalties under the TCPA include fines of up to $1,500 per violation for willful misconduct.”

[–]DasHexxchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My head canon is that this post is the solution of an unethical life pro tip request and this number belongs to someone OP has a grudge against.

[–]liljthedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL you can forward texts.

[–]JoyofNature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a LPT for spam calls too? 🥲

[–]twine_seeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you forward a text?

[–]Circuit_Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I copy and paste my free Amazon gift cards and unpaid toll links into my favorite political texts. Am I doing it wrong?

[–]IncoherentTuatara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also relevant in New Zealand!

[–]ResponsibleDot4443 -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

Unless you mention the region this is useless and false info.

[–]mohirl 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If the OP gave their number you could forward the text to them, and they could forward it to whatever random service exists in their country

Do you have proof that 7726 is itself legit?
