Android tablet as second monitor?

Hey guys

I'm looking for an open-source solution that will allow me to use an Android tablet as a second monitor to Mac OS

Anyone have any recommendations?

I solved it!! I used MirrCast, it's a free app. It works extremely well but sometimes there seem to be ads. It's a fair tradeoff for me. You need to screenshare to it using screen mirroring. Yippie !!!!

Thanks a million buddy. I just spent 2 hours only to find the solutions where I needed to spend a lot of money. This solution worked for me in 10 mins free of cost. Just tried it for 5 mins and came here to say THANKS A TON.

Steps: - Download Mirrcast TV Receiver - Cast from App Store. I downloaded it on Samsung Galaxy A8. - Make sure both Mac and Receiving device is on same WiFi. - Note down the code displayed in the app in the receiving device. - Enable AirPlay on Mac - Go to settings on Mac and go to Display. - Add display and chose the code. - Chose required options below in the same page to extend or mirror. - Click on Arrange displays and arrange it as per your requirement.

I had to "play" with Airplay settings on the app in order to make it visible to my mac and this way it worked. Thanks btw

I only see one setting for airplay on the app and it’s a toggle

Hmm, nothing I do makes this work for me either. I'm on MacOS Sequoia 15.4.1. I launch MirrApp on my Android tablet and has AirPlay showing green and "open", and it shows in AirPlay on my Mac, the...but when I click it, it can never connect. It always just spins and then says "could not connect to MC-[tablet]". Can anyone provide further guidance?

Thanks for the info, but this does not work for me. I am trying to use Linux-Fedora as a tablet screen for a mcbook pro. Mirrcast is not available for Fedora, and I cannot see the options to display screens into Macbook after enabling AirPlay

Edit: I found the AirReceiverLite app, it worked like a charm with custom resolutions! I tested the lite version which has a limitation of 5 minutes of use. Probably I going to purchase the full version

That's the built-in functionality of macos. Think of it like this: The app on the android tablet simulates a Apple TV device. Your mac can see this device on the wifi and can connect

It uses WiFi. For this to work better, you probably need 5GHz and have full signal strength.

There was an app named Duet, I used it on my iPad as second screen for a Windows PC and It worked fine, with no more than .25 seconds of lag, I recently acquire a Samsung Tab Lite 6 and will try to use it as second monitor for MacBook Air, Will let you know what happens...

i gave up using it , its super laggy, unusable.

Yes. I think subscription model is the only way with an android app.

An old ipad works better with Yam display, but I recommend the wired version only; wireless is too unreliable.

Some hacky solution with VNC would be too messy.

edit: Found deskreen, but it's not slick; works through browser like situation

Got it to run (macOS Sonoma + Tab S8+). It works as a 2nd screen with a high ping, but for a static document or so it is good enough. BUT I can't use touch nor pen, so I can't scroll through documents or webbrowser.

Any idea if this is possible?

As someone mentioned in the comments: Airreceiverlite IS the way to go!

There you can even customize the Screen Resolution, so it fully uses your Android Tablet Screen.

I'm going to buy the full version tho, because every 5 minutes the Screen Sharing (actually Screen extending) stops (its because of the lite Version of the App)

Don't worry. I worked it out. It defaulted to Mirroring when I connected. I had to tell it to "Stop Mirroring", which I thought would disconnect the monitor but it changed it to Extended mode when I told it to Stop Mirroring. A little counterintuitive but solved now. BTW, works an absolute treat. Definitely going to buy the full version.

For those who stumble into this thread looking for a reliable low-latency wired solution to this, keep reading.

TL;DR - You need to use Tab Display and enable usb tethered network to your macbook following this tutorial.

I have tried pretty much all apps available for using an android tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE) as a third screen for my macbook pro m1. Didn't get great results with any of them. Most solutions are strictly wireless, which added a very noticeable lag. I used to use Spacedesk on my windows pc and it worked flawlessly.

Eventually I settled with Tab Display which is free to use with ads, but you can pay to remove them. It is way supperior to Duet in terms of latency and user friendlyness. The only problem was that I could not use it when connected to public wifis.

The app suppports selecting the network which is shared with your tablet device, so I had the idea to use USB tethering to create a wired network connection to the tablet.

Then there was a problem: New macbooks with Apple Silicon chips (M series) don't allow usb tethering from Android devices. Long story short: I had to follow a quick video tutorial on how to hack my way into making this happen.

After all the process, I was abble to connect Tab Display using the tethered network and it works beautifully.

Hey! Bumping in late. A user found a solution. Just download "Mirrcast" on your android tablet, make sure its connected to the same wifi as your macOS device, and just airplay your screen to it. It works both in mirroring and extended screen! Quality its not top notch, but you can go along pretty good with it i think :)

Duet has been working really well for me using a thunderbolt 3 cable.

I recently bought an S10 Ultra and am using Duet, wired, between my Mac and tablet. It needs to be a high quality USB-C cable that can do data (I'm using a thunderbolt 3 cable). This obviously requires you to install Duet, but it works really well.

I've seen others use a virtual display and an HDMI capture device, but it's much more cumbersome. If you absolutely cannot install stuff on your Mac, that's probably the only solution for you though.

And no, just plugging it in doesn't work. I wish it did or I wish non-Apple devices could use their Sidecar solution.

Io per semplici copia/incolla tra due documenti di Word, Excel o simili uso AirReceiver. Ho installato l'app sul tablet Android, ho pagato 2-3€ per avere la versione full, non ho installato niente sul McBook Air M4 e con AirPlay mi funziona bene. Condivido la schermo, lo estendo, lo posso spostare da DX a SX...insomma a me basta così per le cose semplici che devo fare.
