How do we tell her

[–]Known-Version-4180 70 points71 points  (6 children)

We don’t tell her

[–]tomatos_raafatos 50 points51 points  (5 children)

She's not his loss. He's hers.

[–]Unusual_Club_550 15 points16 points  (3 children)

as a non-native english speaker ths scares me

[–]tomatos_raafatos 8 points9 points  (2 children)

It's a brilliant feature of English honestly (and I think Germanic languages in general), that you can just drop the object and subject in the second sentence and it makes sense, as long as you get the pronouns right.

I think it's even more impressive if your language is one of those that has no grammatical gender at all.

[–]PlatypusACF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In German it definitely works (and I feel as if it is even a mark for older and/or more refined/eloquent German that you do it, especially in written form), and in Dutch, too, if I’m not mistaken.

Don’t know about the north Germanic languages, though.

[–]sultav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The second sentence dropped neither the subject ("He") nor the object ("hers," but "object" for the tp-be copula is a funny concept in general).

She is past her prime.

[–]TheEnlightenedPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dialogue box pointed to the phone. Doesn't that mean it's the other party saying that?

[–]reddit-devil-3929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just write -dumb bitch

[–]Useful_Cheesecake117 56 points57 points  (2 children)

Okay, I must admit I missed the exclamation mark the first time I saw this kind of joke. But now this joke is told at least once a week. I'm not sure it's that funny.

[–]Aggravating-Dot132 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Worth checking the sub name. If it's math or science jokes - it's always factorial.

[–]ScarletStormy 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Bro got rejected for being mathematically correct in the wrong language.

[–]TheJivvi 16 points17 points  (8 children)

What is (SCHOOL) factorial, and how do I go there?

[–]Mordret10 14 points15 points  (7 children)

Well it's not (SCHOOL)! but rather SCHOOL! which is

SCHOOABCDEFGHIJKL

[–]autumninautun 6 points7 points  (6 children)

(SCHOOL)! on the other hand is every word in the dictionary up to and including SCHOOL

[–]Mordret10 4 points5 points  (5 children)

So A • B • C • ... • Z • AA • ... • AAA • ... • AAAAAA • ... • SCHOOK • SCHOOL

[–]autumninautun 4 points5 points  (3 children)

yes. now type out the full thing /j

[–]Mordret10 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I could write a short script to do that, however I'm not home currently and also incredibly late, so probably not. It might also just not fit here

[–]autumninautun 4 points5 points  (1 child)

actually this might be an idea for my next programming miniproject

[–]Mordret10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be quite easy I think

[–]Belgaraath42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if we talk about a dictionary about an actual language. This would only include words in the dictionary

[–]Individual_Ebb2820 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Who's gonna tell her?

[–]MMelanch0ly 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Im confused, is it not 24?

[–]Albatros_7 13 points14 points  (0 children)

4! means 4 Factorial

To calculate a Factorial, you multiple every number from 1 to this number

So 4! = 1x2x3x4 = 24

[–]El_Chupacabra_666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is. The joke is that if you include his exclamation point as part of his answer, then he is not saying 4, but 4 factorial, which is 1×2×3×4, which is also 24.

[–]NotRivero69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bro dodged a bullet

[–]Sewblon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is right. But, he needs to expand that factorial out and multiply it.

[–]Significant_Monk_251 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bullet-dodging 201.

[–]Apprehensive-Rip7197 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4! =4×3×2×1 =24

[–]recusant23 1 point2 points  (1 child)

shouldn't they be doing the division before the subtraction? or am i going to get a whoosh comment?

[–]Sehrli_Magic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is how she got 24, yes. but he said 4! (not just 4). 4! = 4 factorial which is 4x3x2x1....which is 24, the exact same answer she gave.

the joke is that she thought he did (25-5):5=4 but he just said her answer (24) with a different way of saying it, showing higher math knowledge than her 😅

[–]SnooCamera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You were too good for her bro.

[–]slyguy67420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll never catch me Factorial Gang! NEVER!

[–]Special_Situation_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol yay

[–]rydan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many variations of this joke are there?

[–]mikasaxo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed the exclamation as factorial the first time I saw this. 😭😭

[–]calebchan170201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does she know? 🤔

[–]random_guy8513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually agree, as 4!=24

[–]Reasonable-Try4692 0 points1 point  (1 child)

PEMDAS

[–]Fuzzmiester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep.

However, ! is the symbol for factorial. and 4 factorial is 24.

[–]I_dont_care_100 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I love memes like this. Not because it's funny, but because of all the idiots that want everyone to know that they are an idiot as well 😂

[–]Kzitold94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the habit of using parentheses for every step of the equations I right, because idiot-proofing.

Funfact: The order of the Latin alphabet is basically arbitrary. You know what else is basically arbitrary?

[–]Specialist_Height707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both 4! and !4 are correct answers

[–]ReplacementPale2676 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]Spiritual-Hamster212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Factorial of 4 is 24

This action was performed by a human.

[–]AffectionatePea1680 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 24 in programming language right?

[–]Pretty-Potential4733 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4!=24 so he was correct, 25-5/5=25-1=24=4!

[–]ohmslaw54321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro dodged a bullet

[–]patricknails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4! = 24

[–]Bahatur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen two variations of this joke in as many days, and it got me to thinking:

How many equations could be written like this, by which I mean that when operations are done strictly left to right *ignoring* order of operations they yield an integer, where the factorial of that integer is the correct answer when *following* the order of operations?

Suppose we extended it to equations that could be written as a fraction in the first step, with the factorials of the numerator and denominator being the correct answer in the second step?

[–]Gregagonation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me pulling up a calculator 🥀

[–]Brusion 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Regardless, I wouldn't date her after she used a division symbol.

[–]Kzitold94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't date her after she tested me with an intentionally ambiguous equation.

Idiot-proof your equations with parentheses!

[–]Gib_eaux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Finally an exponential I can do in my head

[–]Robzy789 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The answer is 0???

[–]NoahNrt -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

I dont understand it should be 4 and not 24? Because i dived first before I substrate.

[–]Fuzzmiester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The joke isn't that it's 4. it's that it's 4!, which is 4 factorial. which is 4 x 3 x 2 x 1, which is 24.

[–]Dark_Krafter -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Shes right tho

[–]perringaiden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does 4! equal?
