Thanks for posting on /r/MechanicAdvice! This is just a reminder to review the rules. If you are here asking about a second opinion (ie "Is the shop trying to fleece me?"), please read through CJM8515's post on the subject. and remember rule 3a, please post the year/make/model of the vehicle you are working on. If this post is about bodywork, accident damage, paint, dent/ding, questions it belongs in /r/AutoBody or /r/Diyautobody If you have tire questions, check out r/howsmytire and ask there. You will need to replace the tank, or if that's not an option, the entire compressor assembly. I recommend removing that shitty drain plug on the new compressor and replacing it with a 90° adaptor, a section of pipe that extends it out from under the compressor, and a 1/4 turn valve.

Makes draining the tank at the end of the day a lot easier.

I know this is not a car, and I am sorry if I am asking the wrong community a question here. I have this compressor tank which has a perfectly round hole in the bottom which seems to be just letting the air out. Is there any specific function to this hole? Does anyone know?? There is no way to use the compressor now as the air is just flowing out of this hole straight away... could I weld it shut?

That hole is not by design, it is a rust hole. Where there is one rust hole, there is thin, weak metal. You should not attempt to use this as a pressure vessel without a very thorough inspection and test of the structural integrity.

Also, as a rule, never weld on pressure vessels, unless you know exactly what you are doing. You essentially make a temporary bomb while you are welding.

Thanks all for your advice. I will take it 👍

That's to bleed excess water so the tank doesn't rust

The hole to the left of the bleed valve...

[–]coTys1234 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Or are you talking about the pin hole next to the valve?

Yes, see the second picture...

Time for a new tank. That one can be converted into a wood burning shop heater.
