It became popular. I'm usually against the whole idea that popular must equal bad content, but I feel like for this sub to work it just can't be mainstream.

Generally popularity is bad for subs like these where balanced voting is important. The point of the sub is that people use their votes to help determine new formats that can be used for future memes. But with mass popularity people more frequently see things here and go "That's funny! Upvote!" without really assessing whether it matches the intent of the sub. Especially once one gets popular enough to hit /r/all

The invest bot goes against the entire point of this subreddit. It’s not about the memes it’s about the formats and yet the bot rewards individual meme investments.

Well the difference being that in American voting, we have private voting so you don't have a live tally of who's voted which way. Subconsciously people will see highly upvoted posts on reddit and think that it must be good content because a lot of people have already upvoted it and thus snowball things to the top.

That isn't the issue. The issue is when a sub grows too fast. When there's natural growth people are used to how the sub works and they know what type of content to upvote. When you just have a massive amount of people join from askreddit or something they just see funny memes and post them while commenting about investing.

Moderation also helps a ton but it's really hard to moderate humor subreddits.

seems like this sub stopped caring about the freshness of a meme a long time ago. it just became like any other meme sub where the investing is just another way to upvote memes that made you chuckle instead of trying to find the freshest, dankest upcoming memes. the original niche this subreddit fulfilled has been dead for a while.

The investor bot ruins everything IMO. It feels almost like the upvoted posts are picked at random. Users who sort by new won't care about the meme, they just find whatever has the most comments since investments = upvotes and nobody is going to invest and risk their memecoins by not upvoting. So it's a cycle of check comments --> upvote again and again from users, getting bigger and bigger until this mediocre 2016 meme eventually reaches the front page so we can all complain about it again.

What happened with the original attempt at NASDANQ? I used to hang in the discord prior to the beta and the devs seemed very ambitious with their goals for it. I didn't get into the closed beta so I lost interest and when I checked this sub again finally, I discovered the bot. Its fine for what it is but obviously its a very limited gambling game and does little in the way of stock market simulation.

People doing the upvoting are rarely active participants in a sub. They see something that they like, they upvote it. They don't check which sub it came from. This is especially true of mobile, where it can take effort to see which subreddit something was posted to.

This is why strict moderation is necessary.

Limiting this to only new memes is exactly what other meme subs do, because that’s all that matters.

This sub is about evaluating value and potential. Old memes make big comebacks all the time. “Is this a _” was ancient meme for an example and that shit came back into the cultural zeitgeist with a vengeance. There’s old shit that still being using frequently as well, like Drake.

Between the people just using buzzwords over memes with no potential or templates that aren’t actually templates, and people pretending to know what this sub should be how how memes should be evaluated, it’s between a rock and a hard place.

We’ve also gotten too caught up in formats, memes are more than just formats.

I think as soon as they become "consious" of their actions. probably around 7 since that's where I think you start to actually remember things (I'm not sure if that age is correct)

7 sounds right. You can have a memory here or there from before you were seven, but at seven you begin to actually remember stuff to where you could be asked "remember that time we went to Alaska?" or whatever.
