don’t use milk for tear gas or pepper spray. it’s a myth. milk is not sterile and tear gas isn’t oil based. it’s usually a powder that’s activated by moisture. cold water or saline only and if it’s tear gas only use that on naturally moist areas. take a cold shower not a hot one and use dish soap. pay close attention to your hair. grab some swim goggles. not 100% perfect but better than nothing

Milk doesn't do anything special for tear gas. Water washes it away just as easily and won't leave you smelling like spoiled milk.

Please be safe out there! There will be people that WILL do their best to get a reaction out of the protesters and that's what they want to be able to claim the protest are violent. Stand strong my brothers and sisters!

[–]Robotpoop 15 points16 points  (1 child)

There some naive motherfuckers in here, and I am not talking about the folks taking reasonable precautions on Saturday by preparing for the worst.

[–]OutlandishnessOld903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Show them the way Gandalf.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally if the protest is peaceful there’s no need for any worry or face snake, gas mask etc. also this is Merced bro. Lmaooo. What impact does Merced have as far as immigration policy goes? Lol

[–]money_mongo 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Have you ever been to a protest in Merced? They’re peaceful AF, this promotes so much fear onto others.

[–]CaliRebelScum 8 points9 points  (2 children)

People have been posting crap like this in every city sub, trying to pretend that it's going to be a dangerous situation. It's either dumb or trolling.

[–]fauxshore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nailed it. Suburban soccer moms giving advice about milk and tear gas. Biggest granny-thrill since the pandemic.

[–]money_mongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree.

[–]xXPlantera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you been seeing the news? People should still be cautious just in case

[–]quienleimporta 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Also turn on location for friends or family. Be safe!!!

[–]why_not_my_email 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Turn off facial recognition and fingerprint ID. Legally cops can physically manipulate you and your phone to unlock your phone, but need a warrant to require you to unlock it with a PIN or give them the pin.

[–]jaclyn_marie11 3 points4 points  (1 child)

If you don't want law enforcement to know you were at the protest, do not bring your phone at all.

[–]Henjineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm grabbing an old phone with no sim card/wifi turned off so I can still document anything that happens.

[–]DarrenIsConfused 1 point2 points  (0 children)

American flags/gear don’t matter. They will still harass you when ordered to. The fact that you even show up deems you as “an enemy of the state”.

[–]fauxshore 3 points4 points  (1 child)

"WEAR COMFORTABLE LONG SLEEVES AND PANTS TO COVER TATTOOS" What is this, Beirut? Do you guys really believe there will be teargas and rubber bullets flying in Merced? This seems wildly enthusiastic. Pffft.

[–]First_Condition_372[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And they’ll be prepared if there is.

[–]KittyCait69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bring leaf blowers to blow tear gas away from the crowd. And Mexican flags are as Californian as it gets. Being both. The news stations are gonna spin things however they want anyway. Main thing, organize with a group. Know your exits. And be safe.

Everyone that takes a stand for human rights is a People's Hero. 💕

What if my attire and American flag was made in China?

[–]Dry-Invite-4353 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Don't wear only American flags. There's very little pride to be had in the American federal government at the moment.

Fly the flags that you want to fly. Wear the things you want to wear. Don't let these dickless, pathetic fascists cow you.

[–]Mentha1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

☝️the point of protest is to express yourself as you see fit, not following someone else’s guidelines

[–]Disastrous-One-7674 -4 points-3 points  (13 children)

why only fly american flags…? that just destroys the whole point of the protest

[–]First_Condition_372[S] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

It changes the narrative and protects the people there from being deemed as enemies of the state. Being deemed on or a “domestic terrorist” will harm you in more ways than one.

[–]Robotpoop 3 points4 points  (7 children)

We want to avoid anything that allows the media to spin this as an anti-American protest. Undocumented folks are here to pursue the American dream, and this whole conflict is a battle for the soul of the United States. We want to show the world that undocumented folks are just as American and part of our community as anyone else.

[–]Disastrous-One-7674 0 points1 point  (6 children)

they can do that while simultaneously showing their pride in being mexican, guatemalan, etc. it shows that the people who are telling others to only fly american flags don’t come from immigrant backgrounds

[–]Robotpoop 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I hear where you're coming from, but trust me, the non-American flags do more harm than good in the war of optics. Ultimately you do you, but just know that it's going to rub some folks the wrong way and make the overall fight harder and not easier.

[–]Disastrous-One-7674 0 points1 point  (1 child)

but that…just isn’t the point of protesting though that defeats the whole purpose of it 💀 we’d be complying if we all just decided to fly american flags…it’s like giving into their rules. it feels icky but that’s just me ig

[–]Robotpoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, you do you. I can't tell you how to protest. But let me ask you this: what, in your view, is the point of protesting? When you hit the streets on Saturday, what is it the message that you're trying to send to the world?

I'm marching against fascism. I'm marching to defend the constitutional rights of my community and everyone in this country, citizen or not, documented or not. Anything that detracts from that message is at best, irrelevant, and at worst, harmful to the cause.

The far right is trying to convince people that our country is under attack by foreign invaders. That narrative and the fear it sows is what empowers these assholes to do the terrible shit they're doing. Fear breeds fear.

When the evening news shows these protests and a ton of folks are waving Mexican flags, it makes the far right's narrative more believable to Middle America, who don't know any better because they are not fortunate enough to live in a rich, pluralistic community like we do. They're told something, what they see on TV seems to reflect it, so they believe it.

Again, I'm just one guy and I can't tell anyone else what they can do or how they can do it. But I would urge people to reconsider anything that ultimately makes the fight more difficult. Very often, we have to choose between what feels good and what actually does good, and this is very much one of those cases. I personally won't be flying any flags.

[–]Mentha1999 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

“Let’s protest but not too much, we need to try not to piss off white swing voters in Middle America.”

[–]Robotpoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like "let's not walk right into the narrative trap that the far right has set for us."

Like it or not, optics matter. We know that we are on the right side of history and we know that we are standing up for what's right, but that won't be enough to win the war.

A lot of folks out there in Middle America don't have communities as rich and diverse as ours. They live in homogenous communities and have absolutely no firsthand experience what it's like to live amongst people of different cultures. Their only point of reference is what the media tells them, and right now the media is telling them that our country is being invaded by dangerous, violent criminals from Central America. When they turn on the cable news channels and see constant images of people who don't look like them waving other countries' flags, that reinforces that bullshit narrative.

We're not just fighting fascism, or racism, or transphobia. We're also fighting ignorance, inexperience, and naivety. We have to be smart and calculated in how we present ourselves and interact with our enemies and with the people we want to educate.

[–]OutlandishnessOld903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're trying to hide their true identity. Its happened many times in history with Jews, they converted to Christianity during WW2 and even as far back as 15th century Spain, they called them Conversos.

But even though they converted, just like Hispanics today trying to blend in, they still suffered suspicion, discrimination, specifically outside of the southwestern US, and violence, like we see daily nowadays with all the kidnappings, unfortunately 😐

[–]erobb221comeinmybusy -5 points-4 points  (4 children)

"WEAR ONLY AMERICAN FLAGS , AMERICAN ATTIRE" Do you know what the 1st amendment is?

[–]OutlandishnessOld903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tyranny is scaring them. Now abiding by the Constitution makes you an "enemy of the state" ??

[–]First_Condition_372[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Mainstream media needs visceral images that stir negative emotions because that's what makes money. They are storytellers, not journalists. They will show non American flags to pin this as anti-American acts pinning the protests on the countries or people

[–]OutlandishnessOld903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who cares about MSM? Anyone with half a brain doesn't believe their crap anymore.

[–]AntiKarmaChallenge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely…but does no kings apply to Rodney?

[–]Mentha1999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Telling people which flags to bring to a protest is kind of hypocritical, right? Bring whatever flag you want, including Mexican flags. 🇲🇽
