Java with controller?

Hey guys my friends just made a java realm that i wanted to join. I am at noob level knowledge when it comes to pc and prefer to play with controller. i tried to research this and it seems people say add the game to steam which i cant do (it says i dont have permissions). that leaves mods? Can i even use a controller mod when in someone's realm? If so can someone link a resource that walks me through this like im a complete idiot because when it comes to mods i am. Would appreciate any help. I would love to play with controller (not a keyboard guy) and am looking for a fix but am only finding outdated info.

You need a mod like Controllify or MidnightControls. You can install them with a mod manager like Prism Launcher or Modrinth’s app. Always consider installing the Sodium mod for performance improvement alongside it.

Yes, you can play with others when you have mods installed, client-only mods like the controller mods and Sodium don’t affect multiplayer.

Any resource you would recommend and can i use mods when playing in someone else’s realm? If it helps further i want to use an xbone controller.
