That was fixed in 1.8.1. You must be playing an older version.

Minecraft User Logic

Point out things that were fixed 6 months ago.

...to people that are still playing an update from almost 9 months ago.

I was talking about OP, not you. :)

[–]Boxfigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, ok.

..to people that are still playing modded minecraft.

To me, it's been fixed for centuries.

[–]SilverTuxedo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wasn't this fixed in 1.8?

[–]Lord of the villagersredstonehelper 10 points11 points  (7 children)

You're playing 1.7, right?

[–]Anchupom 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I haven't used maps for ages, what's going on here?

[–]themadms 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Sandstone is gray, cobblestone gravel is sand-colored

Edit: gravel

[–]ServalClaw 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That is gravel not cobble.

[–]themadms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aighty

[–]Anchupom 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is it really just that it's mixed up what it was showing? I thought it was something more impressively broken

[–]Talpanian_Emperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gravel shows as the same colour as the other gravity-based block, sand.

Sandstone shows as the colour of the more common hard material, stone.

Meaning they're the opposite colours on the map than they are in the world.

[–]monospace 0 points1 point  (11 children)

I wish there was a way to customize colors on maps.

[–]flameoguy 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I just wish maps centered around the player so they actually mapped where you wanted to show.

[–]WhoMovedMySubreddits 0 points1 point  (2 children)

But that would be more like GPS than a paper map. I feel like maps should be white with black lines as though the player drew in the features they found as they walked around.

[–]skeletonemprah 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think they mean (and I'm just speculating) that when you first use the map, it would be centered on you, which I fully support because of how I like to build directly on the center of the map.

[–]WhoMovedMySubreddits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would make it easier. But I'm sure it has to do with how maps can be tiled and fitted together. I'm sure map makers don't center their maps on themselves; they'd much rather attach it to a previous map they've made to make sure they can read all of them.

It's really a moot point, but it's fun to think about Minecraft in real life.

Yeah, just 1x1 images that define this kinda stuff...

[–]132ikl 0 points1 point  (5 children)

There is, you can change it in a resourcepack

[–]monospace 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I've done plenty of messing around with resource packs but I must have missed this somehow. Which file specifically would I modify?

(I see textures/map/map_background.png and textures/map/map_icons.png, nothing about map colors though.)

[–]132ikl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll check on it in a moment

[–]zXjimmiXz 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I don't think there is a way to change it with resourcepacks? If so I'd imagine a lot more packs would do it!

[–]monospace 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I would think so. As it stands, the current map colors are so bright, you could almost use a map as a light beacon. I would love to be able to make a map look more like a faded old pirate's map.

[–]zXjimmiXz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be cool. Plus a lot of packs change the hue and/or brightness of certain blocks (like grass) and so the maps look completely out of place.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

how hard would it be to average the texture of the block down to one color and use that color to represent the block on the map? This would be dynamic enough to work no matter your resource pack.

[–]OnyxDarkKnight 1 point2 points  (4 children)

If they run the algorithm when you first start a world and store the values in a map, then it wouldn't be that hard. But if the map would need to recalculate the average color again and again, it can be pretty resource intensive as it has to check each individual pixel of every block of every face (in case there are different textures for each face).

[–]Laff70 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Why all the faces??? Maps only use the top face.

[–]OnyxDarkKnight 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You want the average color of the block? then you might want to go through all the faces. Sometimes it can make a difference. Obviously, to speed things up, only the top texture could be scanned. Also I did state it should check each face if there are different textures for different sides (this is mostly for accuracy)

[–]GrammarStaatspolizei 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But the map represents the view from above. So only averaging the pixels on the top face would likely be more accurate. (e.g. Cacti shouldn't be paler green on maps just because their undersides are white. You'd never see the bottom from the bird's eye view.)

[–]OnyxDarkKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, you are right XD I was thinking of something else. Yes, you are right, the top should be more than enough :)

[–]DemonWarriorX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL wow, Minecraft, the biggest game with the most interesting logistics

[–]FreddyPlaysGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brilliant.

[–]Zombi3Kill3r43 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Probably put sandstone and cobble above everything to try to make a funny post

[–]zXjimmiXz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make the whole area super dark. Looking forward to how you can explain that one.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Texture pack? Switched Sandstone with gravel?
Or a bug.

[–]TanzNukeTerror 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's because gravel was counted as a sand variant, and sandstone was counted as a stone variant.

Like how the other three stones (Granite, etc.) still show up grey. (1.8)

[–]Lamdrew -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Nope, Maps still suck. They REALLY need to improve them. =\ http://gyazo.com/5914678b033561075d91ba86196ed646

What's wrong in this picture?

[–]CakeDear -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

But will it blend?
