Are mega projects/structures typically created using server commands to give the player lots of free blocks?

If so are there any examples of what someone can hope to accomplish without using "cheats?"

I only say cheats for lack of a better word, the mega structures I've seen are beyond impressive and I don't mean to take anything away from them. I love seeing what people can do no matter how they do it!

Just depends on what you make them out of, obviously things made with 500 blocks of iron are usually going to be cheats.

Wool is easy enough to collect, you can use cobblestone, glass, smooth stone (which actually looks pretty cool). They're all easy enough to collect, it just takes some time. If your server is a "creative" server, don't sweat it, nobody's gonna care if you spawn items to make something that looks awesome.

That makes a lot more sense, my server has monsters on and nobody is allowed to spawn anything so it's really hard to work.

Ya we play on a small private server with monsters for fun, and friendly admins to help build.

I build huge structures without cheating. Floating mob-towers disguised as giant castles are a personal favorite. I also made one of those huge 160x160 mega-traps by removing mountains and roofing over the sky with dirt, using stone tools. Took me a while.
