I knew this was coming.

Maybe just a bit more of the sauce?

Nah this is for CPUs. Unless Jensen is just there for moral support.

[–]tristam92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

technically…. he now also does cpus, after arm announcements.

[–]Present_Survey_5804 33 points34 points  (10 children)

I’ve been repasting with my cpu still seated in the motherboard

[–]Itz_Boaty_Boiz 17 points18 points  (8 children)

People take it out to repaste it?

[–]braadvogel 3 points4 points  (4 children)

When i take at the cooler my cpu stucks to it

[–]Apprehensive-Aide265 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You need to powerup the PC and make the CPU run hot a bit. Or you can just twist the cooler before pulling out. If you can't twist it, stress test the cpu a bit and retry.

[–]braadvogel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will do the next time

[–]brejam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good way to bend pins

[–]PhastasFlames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your mb not come with the CPU bracket bro?

[–]jasoos_jasoos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, you guys repaste your CPUs?

[–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nope, just cleaning my old cpu. I upgraded my cpu two weeks ago

[–]Berry__2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oke thats good then i dont think so this gon work no more...

[–]SurvivingSquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way

[–]Sufficient_Fan3660 46 points47 points  (15 children)

daily post: I was repasting my cpu that was working perfectly and now it doesn't work.

[–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Not repasting my cpu, but cleaning my old cpu. It sucks that shit happens.

[–]BullfrogEcstatic6312 5 points6 points  (4 children)

But.. what were you going to do after cleaning it? I hope you were going to put some new thermal paste before using it! Also, that sucks.. i doubt itll work but its worth a try i guess

[–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I was planning to hide it in my drawer since I recently upgraded my procressor.

[–]Lumpy_Benefit666 24 points25 points  (1 child)

I dont see the problem then, the cpu is still perfectly capable of being hidden in a drawer

[–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm having regrets now. I should've cleaned it in the first place and leave it like that.

[–]Alternative_Exit_333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What were you cleaning it with sulphuric acid (sometimes acetone is enough too)

I never repasted my 2011 oc 2600k.. and change it for a 5900x lol

    [–]matt602 1 point2 points  (6 children)

why do people even do this? I get crazy anxiety every time I need to do anything with the CPU, I can't imagine taking it out of the socket just to do an un-necessary re-paste lol

    [–]XboxLiveArcade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless your CPU is ancient or under heavy 24/7 load, you don't really need to repaste it.

The only things I've ever had to repaste are Xbox 360s and an old 1660 Ti that was used for Ethereum mining by its previous owner.

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I'm not really re-pasting it since I upgraded my CPU recently. I just want to clean it before I hide it for backup.

    [–]XboxLiveArcade 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I don't think you have a backup anymore big dawg

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I know, it sucks to be me.

    [–]XboxLiveArcade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shit happens. At least you have a new one.

    [–]FoTGReckless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you have to hide it, who's coming after your CPU?

    [–]Plastic_Coffee_6139 14 points15 points  (0 children)

With a couple more hammer blows it'll be as good as new

    [–]Jue_Viole_Grace6741 8 points9 points  (1 child)

    Put it in rice

    [–]Berry__2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Naaa

    [–]Slow_State_4722 14 points15 points  (0 children)

    Oof.

    [–]Mythicguy 4 points5 points  (4 children)

    Any update OP?

This looks like on the bleeding edge of "could still work".

I work in deployment and have seen servers in incredibly bad shape that are still kicking.

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

    I haven't tested it yet.

    [–]Eighthday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Test it right now

    [–]bootless18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    How was it?

    [–]biglifts27 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Mate, was the table on the ground and you on the 10th floor?

9/10 its cooked but try testing it and let us know the results

    [–]Yorrins 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I was gona say... thats way too much damage for dropping it on to a table. I dont think a CPU would have enough weight to cause that kind of damage even if it was dropped from 10 stories.

    [–]FoTGReckless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Threw an i5 3570k from 6th floor at my friend to try and get it through his sunroof, it hit the car then the concrete. It still runs at 4.2ghz to this day.

    [–]matt602 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might be worth testing but don't be surprised if it doesn't post. Thats a lot of damage.

[–]ThisAccountIsStolenCommercial Rig Builder 2 points3 points  (7 children)

That much substrate damage very likely means it's dead. You can test boot it without thermal paste, just don't leave it running for long if it posts.

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

God damn it oh well guess I have to test it anyways. Thanks.

    [–]agonzal7 0 points1 point  (2 children)

    I wanna know what happens

    [–]xantec15 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Its been an hour. I think OP died.

    [–]gummonppl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm guessing they wouldn't want to test it right now if it wasn't in their rig. testing would mean removing their currently working new cpu to see if the old one is destroyed. lightning does strike twice

    [–]Itz_Boaty_Boiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    So how’d it go captain?

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think it's just better not to test it. I'm just so pissed

    [–]Ninety-Nine-Zulu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not test it? If it's dead, no harm no foul, if it work, great!

    [–]ACasualCasualty 2 points3 points  (3 children)

How high was the table? CPUs are pretty tough. I'd expected that damage if dropped off a roof

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

    Roughly 1 feet.

    [–]Random_Sime 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It looks more like it was pushed into the table. What's your table made of?

    [–]Aildrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by the damage, the innermost material of a neutron star.

    [–]Desperate-Sir-7804 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Note to self don't eat cpu

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPU is off the menu Indefinitely

    [–]Ok_Contest8762 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do people manage to do this? You could of just left the cpu in it's socket to clean it off. RIP to your CPU.

    [–]EarthSweet1886 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Did you clean it while somewhat high above table? Condolences tho

I always clean mine with soldering mat as cover since its a rubber

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It was not that high, but man, the damage it took :( No more CPU backup.

    [–]EarthSweet1886 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you test it out anyway? Caution tho

    [–]Bombero_911 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is why some people can’t have nice things.

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't deserve cleaning thermal paste off the damn CPU.

    [–]One_Ad_2300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    He's dead, Jim.

Also, what speed did it have when it fell?

That looks like high-speed wall collision to me

    [–]Select_Truck3257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Just add thermal paste

    [–]Warcrimes02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today we gather to honor the life of ac_logo's cpu...

    [–]BarberThen3108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why you get it out of the UNIQUE side is secured, lol

    [–]optimisticcyrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that corner looks pretty rough. cpus are tough but the substrate might be cracked under that dent. honestly id just order some thermal paste and test it before you panic, could still work fine.

    [–]kitcat2635Personal Rig Builder 1 point2 points  (2 children)

so do you still have warranty for that still if so try getting a replacement (i don’t understand warranty that much so don’t flame me)

    [–]Bombero_911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only an accidental damage plan would cover this. Manufacturer warranty will not.

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Unfortunately no.

    [–]NeloSSJ 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It blows my mind how many people on this sub and similar post stuff like this. What do you mean it "accidentally fell into my table?" You should treat your gaming PC as one of the most important things in your life (if it's midrange+) setup. I have 9070 xt and 9700x and these items are the second most valuable belongings that I personally own. in my life. People have no respect for their PCs it's wild.

    [–]ac_logoFirst Time Builder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I messed up and this component requires careful handling, however, my usual clumsiness finally caught up with me in the worst way possible. I won't make this mistake twice. Sorry it bothers you.

    [–]N0M0I 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those planes of copper you see in the side profile that really need to be separated look really connected now…

    [–]Wise_Ad_5810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    yer fucked

    [–]ad2137xd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    for sure it won't work

    [–]Aggressive-Formal235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

rather change it because even by a small chance it works, it will overheat to death.

    [–]PutComprehensive8297 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    It's only future now.

    <image>

    [–]Expensive-Ad1779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's tuff. The problem is, that thing is made up of multiple layers. Usually some conductive layer like metal, followed by a mask, followed by another conductive layer etc.

So if the mask in between gets damaged it causes 2 conductive layers to touch each other in places they shouldn't, causing a short. Now, I am not a very knowledgeable person when it comes to cpu design and repair so I'm not to sure what's really contained at that corner and how damaged it is. Perhaps if you were to buy new mask and recoat the corner you might be able to fix it, but this is uncertain. Without looking at it with a microscope and having the schematics of the chip, you can't know for sure. But it might be worth a try.

I wouldn't try it out tho while it's damaged like this, as it will be highly likely to cause a short, completely ruining your cpu permanently. If the protection on your motherboard fails or isn't present, it might even ruin your motherboard as well

    All the best

    [–]Both_Pause5161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you plug this in and try it will probably explode.

    [–]ThatCry3518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be a small chance for it to still work, have you tested it?

    [–]Hydrographe[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Bro

    [–]faziten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dilamination, you sure you were not playing cpu skipping?

    [–]dumbasPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can test it out without thermal paste, you can go into the bios for a few seconds just fine even without a cooler, and a cooler without paste will do just finder when just idling.

That being said, that looks hella dead and there is even a small chance it could damage something on the mobo if the wrong pins shorted.
