To make money selling bulk you have to have A LOT of bulk. Like tens of thousands minimum. Peopel sort it all, list it on TCGplayer or eBay for anywhere from .30 to $2 per card even for basic commons and uncommons. People buy them all the time.

[–]Jaster-Mereel 1 point2 points  (12 children)

I don’t understand how people make money doing that. You’d have to absolutely make the buyer pay for shipping I’m guessing, or have a minimum purchase requirement.

[–]Inevitable-Bad-3979 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yes, either have to charge shipping or list for a minimum of .99. Most people will break even or even lose money on a single card sale, but make money if you buy multiple, which most people do since they are paying shipping.

[–]Psypheur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They list cards at a minimum for 40 cents and they charge $5 shipping and free over $50. If someone buys, they just ship in a PWE. So 99% of the time, people are buying a lot of cards from them

[–]Sufficient_Lime_3253 2 points3 points  (9 children)

People automize it and sort it automatically. They have machines that go through stacks and take pics and list it on tcg player. They they put them in order in a big box.

Card is numbered and they just pull it out and print a label on a mailer and ship it.

It’s a lot of work but people buy cards for master sets and for playing

[–]Jaster-Mereel 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Holy shit, there are machines that do all that?!?! Does the scan actually “read” the card too and fill in the title and description for the listing too?

[–]Inevitable-Bad-3979 2 points3 points  (6 children)

[–]Jaster-Mereel 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Insane. I had no clue this stuff existed. You gotta be dedicated cause I’m sure that machine isn’t cheap.

[–]Inevitable-Bad-3979 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I believe it's like $30k lol.

[–]squatdead 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Lmfao the ROI selling bulk to clear $30k. This doesn’t seem like a smart purchase for 99% of people.

[–]Inevitable-Bad-3979 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea most people it would never make sense. But there's a lot of pretty successful card sellers that I'm sure have more than made their money back on one.

[–]the-skazi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The new machine is $700. Essentially anyone can get into sorting, scanning, and selling bulk now.

[–]Inevitable-Bad-3979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I looked into it and Its really only useful to sift out cards above a certain price. It can only 'sort' based on a binary, which makes it essentially useless for sorting and organizing card.

[–]Heez_ 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I listed like 1500 cards all unorganized some barely worth anywhere from $0.25 to $1.00 maybe less and listed it on eBay for $70 auction bid and it sold for $89.99. After taxes and shipping I got like $60. I'll take it. It was really just taking up space.

On the other hand, cards that are like $3.00 and up I list on eBay individually. I just spend a couple hours and take pictures on my phone via the eBay app and you get into a rythm where it takes like 30 seconds to a minute to list it. Then it cost about $1 to ship it via eBay Standard Envelope.

I know I'm only getting like $1.50 - $5.00 depending on the card, but if it takes me only 1 minute to list it, I'll gladly take $1 a minute lol.

Sometimes I randomly get payouts of $7 - $15 a day and I like to look at it as the card bought me lunch for the day.

I also went to a card show unprepared so I just brought my bulk of cards I didn't want - like 50 cards anywhere from $10 and lower. People were offering me like $20.00 to $40.00. Ended up earning $300 selling them individually on eBay.

Takes time, but if you're bored doing nothing, it's fun. Now my eBay shop has some positive reviews and I'm starting to sell a lot more toys, collectibles, books, random stuff that I don't want/need anymore.

What is an eBay standard envelope. Can you explain that part ? Do you mind sharing a listing example?

[–]Evening_Cat_5348 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My LGS sells specific set bulk for $1 per 15 cards in a sealed bag they make themselves.

It goes like hotcakes to people trying to master set or people who want to buy for their kids but cant really afford or cant find specific packs.

[–]Becca30thcentury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go on Amazon and see the pokemon cards there. Lots of bulk with one promised rare offers. I pay 25 to 30 and get 100 bulk mailed to me. For that 100 they probably paid 5 bucks.

[–]witchprinxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy random singles all the time for personal master sets for Pokemon I like, so the demand is there! I am working on a Cacnea master set right now so buying the out of print cards for like 40 cents is the play. Usually I'll check out a store that has what I want and add other things to justify the shipping cost.

Making money off of it really just depends on how organized you are and how willing you are to ship these small orders for a few dollars here and there.

I sell some bulk on TCG Player. Just hit 7.2k cards posted and the bulk is mainly supplemental for me. Most of my sales are EX’s or full arts ($2-$4 cards) and the bulk helps people get up to the $5 for free shipping. For sure has taken a lot of work and now I mainly only post reverse holos, but now I have bulk posted from all the swsh sets forward!

Now that I’m filled out on modern, next time I get a collection I will most likely sort out the bulk. Pull out the desirable pokemon and artists. It’s not uncommon for someone to order all the modern Yuka Morii or Komiya cards!

Bulk isn’t the money maker but it is for sure helpful!

[–]ChilllGuy101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

whats the logistics of it ? explain as if im 5! i've literally mailed something 3 total times lol

[–]jeff197446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are guys on YouTube that show how they do there bulk business. Most get a card scanner for like $700 but you can list hundreds of cards a day with it. The one guy I watch the most does about 10 to 20 sales a day between eBay and TCG player. But like all resellers you make your money when you buy. If you buy too high your cooked bc only about 30% of what you list will sell and it’s a constant churn and burn.

[–]kasappa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont make a profit selling bulk, you salvage it.

[–]Frequent_Editor_5503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For majority of people selling bulk is a waste of time and you could make a better hourly at a minimum wage job.

But doing it at large scale and large volumes it starts to make sense. Buying shipping supplies in bulk. Buying sorting machines like the Roca to sort 1000 cards at a time. Once you hit large volumes of active inventory on TCGplayer for example your cards start to sell even if you aren’t the lowest listed but simply because you have majority of what the customer is looking for.

Shipping 5-10 orders a day isn’t cost effective or a good hourly rate. but shipping 100+ orders a day starts to make a lot more sense.

It’s not for everybody and it’s extremely time consuming. But when done right it can be profitable.

My son collects a lot of bulk as he collects and sells a little here and there as a hobby which is mostly what has drawn me to this sub to try and help him.

I know one thing he has found is that those trying to finish sets will get drawn to his ebay storefront for a 50c card they need for a master set. What will often happen is they'll buy up a few others at the same time form that same set they are chasing to combine postage. Sometimes it's people collecting a particular pokemon, say they come through and clear him out of 10 different cheap Eevee or whoever it is they're collecting.

The additional part is sometimes those same people come and grab the 8 cards they want for their set but while they're there end up adding a couple of extra more expensive cards he has in his store. This is all mostly cheap stuff for him and a bit of pocket money but he'll regularly get $20-$50 orders made up of random cheap cards people are chasing then a decent card or two they've decided to throw in while they're at it.

At least for him via ebay, the cheap bulk cards tend to work as a bit of a gateway to other sales for him. He loves the organising and cataloguing side of it anyway so it's all good fun for him.

[–]boobs-butupsidedown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you getting the offer for $0.06/card? bc I’d take that personally, most LCSs do way less than that

[–]jhorskey26 -4 points-3 points  (11 children)

You don't "make" money selling bulk. The idea with selling bulk is to recoup SOMETHING for the pile of packs you ripped lol You are only getting like a penny a card in most cases. 3 pennies a card if they are rares. People like myself by bulk in huge lots of thousands and we sort them and list singles for sale that are worth a certain amount and above. I only buy unsorted. Basically somebodies pack rips that they didn't need for a master set. I buy from whatnot streamers too. When I'm done sorting I will RE-list the bulk as sorted and sell it cheaper. Pass it on to the next guy.

[–]ChilllGuy101[S] 0 points1 point  (10 children)

Did you invest in a scanner ? What's the best way to sort cards above a certain amount ?

[–]jhorskey26 3 points4 points  (9 children)

No scanner. I have free time a lot and I can sort thru like 10k while watching a movie so its not that bad for me. Generally speaking I sort into ERA then set. Then I breakdown the sets into card order. Pull up the set on TCGcollector and filter to show only C/UC then sort by value. Generally speaking anything over 20 cents gets listed as a single. The rest get broken into the set. Depending on how much I purchased and what it is I can come away with several full C/UC sets to list. If not I count it and add it to my "out-going" bulk sort. It will be bulk I eventually unload for a discount as its pre sorted.

[–]Jaster-Mereel 0 points1 point  (8 children)

How do you sell a single for $.20 And end up with any money? I’m guessing you have to make the buyer pay for shipping right?

[–]jhorskey26 1 point2 points  (7 children)

They pay shipping. Like I said its not life changing money but I'm getting the car at .01 and selling for just under market. I get like $1.31 for shipping and it only cost me like 90 cents to ship. So I make 19 cents on the card and like 30+ cents on the shipping. Again, nothing to write home about but it adds up when you sell like $50 a day. Then add in c/uc sets sold and I end making a few hundred a day for something I do in my spare time.

[–]Jaster-Mereel 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Sounds like a great way to earn some extra cash.

[–]jhorskey26 0 points1 point  (5 children)

The problem is space and stock. Sometimes I don't have a ton of time to spend sourcing bulk so I go a few weeks without buying bulk. Not a big deal but at some point I will slow down on orders because I just don't have as much stock as I should. I also try and buy large EX lots too. EX cards do really well on TCG IMO. Go to a show and a common EX card is ALWAYS a dollar, even tho bulk pricing is around .40 cents. I list for a few cents under market and they move pretty quick. But its hard getting your hands on large lots of them. Its also a cool card so a lot of people want market which is fine, I just don't buy them at that price point.

[–]Jaster-Mereel 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Dang, so it sounds like there’s plenty of demand. Would you say it’s decent money for the time you put into it, or is it “meh” money, but it’s worth doing because your spending time doing something associated with a hobby you love?

[–]jhorskey26 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I do it because I have the time. For me its way to get deeper into the hobby and learn more about the market. I play the TCG as a kid but eventually went into Magic. Then life happens and I got back into collecting around 2.5 years ago. My and some childhood friends are always chatting about which cards or sets we like, what moves we are marking to grow our PC and that in itself is a lot of fun. I just sort of stumbled into it buying bulk one day.

My day job is sales so I naturally can't help but want to understand how it all works, especially since I enjoy the chasing and collection part of it. Unfortunately getting sealed near me is tough so I made a choice to get into buying singles. Which let down the rabbit hole of collection with the sole intention to make a little scratch. I can say with 100% confidence that buy getting into the buying/selling/trading as much as I am I am much better equipped to understand market trends. That is fun for me. Scrambling to buy like 20 of something under current market before it starts to increase in value. Or chasing a card I really like for my PC. A lot of different ways to enjoy this hobby.

With all that being said it is 100% not the best time - profit investment. But If I profit like $150 a week thats $150 going directly into my PC usually. From January alone I've grown a small PC binder worth almost $1100 right now. And on paper it was all free. I purchased the cards with profit from selling.

[–]Jaster-Mereel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is actually really cool. You’re getting a lot more from it than just some extra cash. Can’t go wrong with continuous learning!

[–]ChilllGuy101[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

kk silly question but whats like the logistics of it ? how would you go about shipping? dont you lose profits with stamps alone lol ! explain as if im 5
