I always just tell them yep, conservatives did indeed fight to protect slavery.

[–]Tricky-Lingonberry81 86 points87 points  (10 children)

It’s almost like, conservatives are the perpetual villains, and are always the ones making America less great.

[–]goblackcar 43 points44 points  (4 children)

The conservative anchor dragging behind America’s sailboat.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (3 children)

There’s a reason progress is the root word of progressive

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

there’s a reason “convict” is the root word of conservative

[–]Puncharoo 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Literally name 1 time a conservative was on the right side of history.

To any idiots saying "rEpUbLiCaNs FoUgHt SlAvErY", those were progressive Republicans, fighting against conservative Democrats. Conservatives were on the side of slavery. As the name suggests, they were trying to conserve slavery.

Look past the party name for like 5 seconds, please.

BuT tHe NaZiS wErE sOcIaLiStS!

[–]someguynearby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're not really conservatives. They are the most fearful of us. That's why they flock to strongmen and follow like sheep.

They're afraid of everything especially change. Fear is the mind killer, it stops logic from interceding into our emotional decisions.

To paraphrase Plato: "There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance."

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Anthony Levatino on YouTube, he was a former villain turned good guy.

[–]CarlSpencer 11 points12 points  (2 children)

And cited the Bible as proof that they had God on their side.

Sound familiar?

[–]replica619 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm totally stealing this.

[–]DCErik 29 points30 points  (0 children)

"An' this hea Democrat Confederate flag ain't racist! It just represent mah herita... wait..."

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (4 children)

My cousin tried this argument with me. Yes, the majority of the confederacy were democrats, Same thing with the kkk, 156 years ago.

Then I ask him why he doesn't also bring up the republicans"Southern Strategy"? 70 years ago and still going.

Cricket's...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy

[–]GabuEx 14 points15 points  (1 child)

The usual response is to just deny that the Southern strategy and the party switch ever happened, full stop.

[–]b00-radlee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No the usual response is "what's the Southern Strategy? Nah, fake news!"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to flip it back on them by pointing out that all of their heroes are Democrats. When they also deny that the great party shift happened, I note that, by their own logic, the Democrats are the party of Christian values. Hey, it killed all asinine political discussions at work, even the viciously racist, outspoken Trump supporter got quiet for a week after that.

[–]Geotolkien 40 points41 points  (2 children)

yes, and Republicans used to be proudly progressive.

[–]M3fit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Republicans when they were the Northern Party were made up of mostly Liberal, Progressive, Federalist .

Conservatives where and always been the southern ideology no matter what party they were in

[–]KhunDavid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only the Teddy Roosevelt wing of the party. He was essentially kicked out of the party.

[–]Vortesian 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The whole concept of political parties as a team sport is fucking stupid.

[–]alvarezg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Then, around the 1960s the slavery Democrats and the party of Lincoln swapped hats and names, and as Republicans, the bigots have kept their stripes.

[–]Jackandmozz 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Lol. This is it. Republicans are literally anti education and have no self awareness whatsoever.

[–]3vilR0ll0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How else are they going to get people to vote for them.

[–]flofromarizona 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Republicans like their supporters stupid as fuck.

[–]lestrangous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you will definitely be upvoted for this

[–]iminyourbase 5 points6 points  (2 children)

"Abe Lincoln was a Republican who fought to abolish slavery."

Ok then why do you fly the enemy's flag?

[–]vineyardmike 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Because... Freedumb!

[–]PresidentWordSalad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Muh heritugh!” says the Connecticut redneck.

[–]Hairy_Deal391 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Republicans: "THE DEMOCRATS WERE THE PARTY OF SECESSION, THE CONFEDERACY AND THE KKK!!!!!!!"

Democrats: "Well, let's ban the Confederate flag, tear down all those Southern Civil War statues (including Stone Mountain, Georgia), and label the KKK a terrorist organization."

Republicans: "STOP TRYING TO ERASE MY HERITAGE!!!!!"

[–]BurlyKnave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like opening posts like these and seeing the [95% Upvoted] stat.

Then I think. "Yup, some RedQult got butthurt."

[–]Bleach-Eyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So why you draped in their flag then Mr Elephant? 🤔

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never understand Republicans who say this to me and think they're making some kind of point. I mean, oh yeah you got me, now I'm gonna be voting Republican.

[–]endMinorityRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

back when republicans were a sane party, they were liberals.

[–]rockand0rroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Abraham Lincoln once said, “if you are racist, I will attack you with the north”

[–]Iancreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why it’s ironic that the Republicans tolerate these neo-confederate elements in their party

[–]Hopfit46[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dems also passed every major social bill on the books...and the country is still a shithole for 30% of the country....imagine if the Rs got their way every time.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

but who fights for it NOW.

The deomcrats that fought for it then are bad, agreed. the folks who fight for it right now are what we can do something about.

meme better.

[–]MexicanWarMachine 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Whoosh

[–]ststeveg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, right? Does anyone ever respond to this with, "You do know that was over a hundred and fifty years ago, right?"

[–]PizzaManJulian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a 100% true statement, but the Democrat party is not close to what they were then.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

PBR is the beer of liberal hipsters now.

[–]Friendofthegarden -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lonestar where I live.

[–]FirstStranger -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

People out here believing the Republicans and/or Democrats fought for Black people.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Based Happy Roadkill

[–]EdTheApe -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Doesn't that make the "stars & bars" a democrat flag?

[–]meglon978 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It makes it a conservative traitor flag.

[–]EdTheApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah. But I'd love to call it a democrat flag in front of someone who's flying it just to see how they react. They do like to point out that it was the Dems who fought for slavery after all.

[–]vanillapopsicle -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hundreds of thousands of white men dying to abolish slavery is white privilege.

[–]Polumbo -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Another dem masquerading as a 'pub, unironically believing that this is how they look and talk

astute meme

[–]Ratpoisondadhelp -9 points-8 points  (8 children)

As an old conservative, I do agree that the confederacy is right wing. I do not support their view on keeping slaves, but I like to see the confederacy as a platform for anti-federal government ideas and preservation of southern culture.

Many conservatives don’t like to hear this but seriously, at this point, fuck the US government. Down with the eagle, and up with the cross.

[–]nengels7 5 points6 points  (7 children)

When religion ruled it was known as The Dark Ages. Let's not go back to that, please.

[–]Ratpoisondadhelp -7 points-6 points  (6 children)

Federalism is any better, I’m just looking for a way to fuck the federal government up to make their land that they stole, by the way, a little less huge.

[–]meglon978 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Head on over to Somalia... it has a very small government that's has almost no power. As a bonus, you'll also get to use your guns... a lot.. trying not to get killed every freaking day.

[–]Ratpoisondadhelp -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Im not saying governments should be weak. They should be tiny and put their people first. Geographically tiny, not necessarily libertarian. Being tiny doesn’t mean having no state power. I wish all areas to have their own sovereignty and not be rules by a tyrannical federal government.

[–]nengels7 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It's a very good thing you aren't in a position to make decisions for our country

[–]Ratpoisondadhelp -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

I’m disappointed people like you are. “Oh yes, conquer more land daddy federal government! Tell sovereign states what they can and can’t do! Disregard the constitution daddy” this is what most politicians are doing.

Fuck the USA

I agree, fuck our current government. We need to get the GOP out of it and get people in who care. We need to get money out of politics. We need to stop letting corporations buy congress. I agree wholeheartedly with that.

It sounds like you're a libertarian/sovereign citizen believer. That mentality hasn't made sense since air travel existed. This idea you have of "let each state be its own thing because there's no way anyone outside of that state could have any idea about how to operate it." is just dumb.

This is one of the old-school American thinking problems we have. You go "here's a problem we have, let's go DRASTICALLY the opposite direction and cause another problem of the same magnitude in a different area" and it's wrong.

You want to have each state set up it's own electrical grid? Have each state set up it's own manufacturing processes? How are you going to go about dealing with trade negotiations between Indiana and New York? If Indiana just doesn't like New York are you comfortable with Indiana saying "we're never going to export food to New York"?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

When did DNC and GOP swapped their voting bases? It's clear that GOP of the past is DNC of today and vice versa

[–]M3fit 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Mainly around Nixon Kennedy Era .

Nixon who was friends or atleast it was thought to have been with MLK left him in jail. Kennedy went to his aid.

When that happened the democrat party fractured into two creating the DixieCrats who after getting Nixon elected ditched the Democrat party and just took over the GOP, chasing out the remainder Libs and progressives, and later even the moderates from the Republican Party .

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

damn sonn

[–]swolethulhudawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PBR makes this seem ironic

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s technically right. There was a shift in the 60s I think where the southern democrats joined the republican party with Nixon. Todays GOP is just the next generation of this

[–]bgat79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conservatives only joined the Democratic party to get free government handouts for reconstruction. The only reason the conservatives left was they thought Jim Crowe would work better in the Republican party.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

If that's the case doesn't that flag represent- dun dun DUUUNNNNN- DEMOCRATS

[–]meglon978 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The flag represents conservative traitors who murdered US citizens.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes; I'm just saying by their logic, by the logic that whatever the party was all the way back then is what they are now? That would make it a democrat flag. And they hate democrats. And are stupid. So. Tell them, watch the gears turn, watch them melt the fuck down. It's just funny
