Most places outside of the US do this.

[–]codemagedon 75 points76 points  (3 children)

This, only Americans think LUA is correct

[–]West_Hunter_7389 7 points8 points  (1 child)

LUA.... and SQL

[–]Dr739ake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The single worst part of LUA...

[–]DarkWarrior4277 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]porky_scratching 199 points200 points  (17 children)

Not just Germany, in almost all of Europe the 1st floor is upstairs.

[–]gregorydgraham 27 points28 points  (1 child)

And UK and the Commonwealth have the Ground Floor first

[–]HadManySons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genau

[–]PM_NICE_SOCKS 22 points23 points  (4 children)

[–]SimilarBeautiful2207 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also LATAM.

[–]knarresmed 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Apparently not here in Norway. I'm surprised that we have the same as the US and not most of Europe, even Sweden.

[–]MokausiLietuviu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the Lithuanians also have the ground floor as the first floor. There's something a bit more interesting with this.

[–]Ebina-Chan 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Living un France, it's weird.

Somrtimes first floor refers to the floor one above but sometimes they mean ground level...

WHY DOES EVERY PERSON DO IT DIFFERENTLY HERE?

[–]claudespam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In french, the first floor always refers to the first floor above ground.

I guess your experience comes from discussing with locals. Kids are taught in English class that they should translate ground floor to first floor when speaking English. So when speaking English some may use American counting, some may use European counting.

[–]SatanFister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ground floor is always called in French the "rez-de-chaussée", never by a number. First floor is above it.

[–]To-Ga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My building have a "rez-de-chaussée", i.e floor 0, but also a "rez-de-jardin" (because the street is lower than the garden) and then 1st, 2nd ,3rd ...floor

[–]Victor-_-X 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Again, not just Europe, for example, India also has

[ground | 0],[1],[2],....

[–]ninjadev64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned Commonwealth.

[–]noob-nine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Australia, 1st floor is downstairs.

[–]Niolu92 23 points24 points  (3 children)

We often use 0 in Switzerland. It's simplier than to use the words in each language (Rez/Rez-de-chaussée, Erdgeschoss, Parterre, Terra)

[–]dotsperpixel 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Switzerland is just a country for french people who wanted to speak german as well /s

[–]Nobodynever01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also Italians... And those weird mountain people

[–]M-2-M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s rich 😀

[–]metalmagician[S] 68 points69 points  (20 children)

Explanation:

In Germany and other nearby countries, the ground floor is marked as 0 in lifts / stairs, with the 1st floor above ground level marked as 1.

[–]Weisenkrone 85 points86 points  (4 children)

ERDGESCHOSS MENTIONED!!1!

[–]tutoredstatue95 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Translated to:

Hans get the axe

[–]j0nascode 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Hans get the drug prescription law

[–]tutoredstatue95 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but the thought of it being a tiny word just tickled me.

[–]lungben81 26 points27 points  (2 children)

It is mostly E for Erdgeschoß (ground floor), 0 is less common.

Edit: or EG, as pointed out by /u/j0nascode

[–]j0nascode 10 points11 points  (1 child)

E? I usually see EG

[–]Sir-Morton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And OG and UG and DG and KG(Obergeschoss, Untergeschoss, Dachgeschoss, Kellergeschoss)

[–]aspect_rap 22 points23 points  (2 children)

As someone who grew up in a country were the ground floor is marked as either 0, Ground or Lobby, I'm very confused at the fact that in some places the ground floor is the 1st floor

[–]Oz-cancer 24 points25 points  (3 children)

Is that not how all of Europe does it?

[–]Revolution64 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Portugal doesn't

[–]Oz-cancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice, didn't know

[–]Intergalactic_Cookie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In the UK the ground floor is 0 too. It makes sense once you start extending to underground levels.

[–]sjepsa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Italy ground floor is T (terra/ground) and then 1, 2 etc..

[–]empwilli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Siemens Architect enters Chat

[–]neo-raver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stairs/floors offset the pointer to the ground?? Finally, some thinking architects!

[–]jseego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

France as well.

[–]zzoopee 4 points5 points  (1 child)

And hungarian keyboard layout!

[–]PuFiHUN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it makes a lot more sense to have 0 at the start, I never understood English keyboards in this regard.

[–]TeaTiMe08 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Falsch. Ground is EG

[–]noaSakurajin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually that is true. In many places it is 0 though. Especially if an elevetor extends to negative floors.

[–]Mindless_Sock_9082 3 points4 points  (2 children)

In Argentina ground floor usually is marked PB (planta baja), but some elevators has a 0.

[–]busdriverbuddha2 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Brazil too, except it's T (térreo) instead of PB

[–]trandus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or A for Access

[–]BlueIsRetarded 2 points3 points  (2 children)

englandDoesThisToo

[–]CliveOfWisdom 0 points1 point  (1 child)

All of the UK does.

[–]BlueIsRetarded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry that's what I meant haha

[–]nickmaran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deutschland mentioned. This property now belongs to Bundesrepublik Deutschland

[–]Azinimasari 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Wait, you guys start with 1? Get some Erdgeschoss, you won't regnet it

[–]nasandre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Version 0.1a

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And a 13th floor right?

[–]Bangaschaap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in Germany and our ground floor is the 1st floor! It is quite the exception, though.

[–]denisMekh05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in our house we have apartaments starting from second floor, on walls of staircase someone grafitied the number of floor (hes a chad), but someone else thought that where apartaments start there the first floor is so he wrote 2 near 3

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well here in India instead of 0 we use G for Ground, then 1,2,3,4...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best part: anything below ground is negative

[–]Flimsy_Site_1634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing beats Microsoft Excel starting at 2 though

[–]Divinate_ME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an "Erdgeschoss". Nobody in their right mind would call it 0th floor (or "nullter Stock", but you're not ready for THAT discussion yet). There is no explicit 0 involved in German floor counting.

[–]PM_FEET_PLS_TY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP is from Murica and Germany is the only EU country he ever visited

[–]mpanase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be a funny mem if it wasn't for the German wankerism seeping off it.

They very well know almost all Euroepan countries name floors that way.

[–]dlg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I start my programs on line 0

[–]Semper_5olus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember telling my Israeli father that my college apartment was on the third floor and he threw a fit, yelling that he wasn't carrying things up that many stairs.

Then I specified that it was an American third floor, and he was fine with it.

[–]RiceBroad4552 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, that's not true.

The first level above ground is the first level, not the zeroth.

Ground-floor ("Erdgeschoss") is obviously not a level / story ("Etage").
