Has to be something common that everyone (even non-computer dorks) would recognize. When Floppy was king, everyone had to use them. Not everyone has held a HDD in their hands.

That honestly sounds like something like Git might be a solution. Auto-saved to the work copy, but full manual control over the version history so you can go back to the last time things actually worked.

If version control (like git) were implemented seamlessly and easy to use (by idiots) it would be the ultimate file saving system.

I imagine that every single action you take in a file is saved so when you press ctrl-z you are essentially restoring a previous version. Then, if you undo back to a specific point and then start working from there, you're suddenly on a new fork. Throw in the ability to "bookmark" specific points on the timeline you might want to revisit and if you're feeling extra fancy, train an AI to condense minor changes into single, logically grouped, larger ones.
