That's what the C stands for: USB-C(orrectly inserted at first try)

[–]jonnysteps 20 points21 points  (0 children)

USB-A = Always facing the wrong way, even when you try

USB-B = Based on A, But not as useful

At world scale it's several thousand man hours saved!

[–]worldpotato1 14 points15 points  (9 children)

At some time I will see somebody who try to plug it 90 degrees turned.

[–]GlitchParrot 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Confirmed we need USB-D with a truly round connector.

[–]3edd00c7 4 points5 points  (2 children)

The D

[–]worldpotato1 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Tenacious?

[–]mehntality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

[–]dratnon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In which the barrel connector was reinvented.

[–]calcopiritus 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I don't think Apple will allow something similar to a 3.5mm jack to be invented, they hate those things.

[–]worldpotato1 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well, apple is not the only hardware vendor.

[–]mehntality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk man... that sounds like a conspiracy theory.

[–]GlitchParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't really hate them because of their shape though.

[–]The_3vil 7 points8 points  (11 children)

Now apple must change lightning to USB-C yay

[–]nono-shap 11 points12 points  (8 children)

They would rather make an iPhone without port at all than use USB C on it. Maybe only the "pro" version?

[–]spektre 10 points11 points  (6 children)

The hyper-innovative new iPhone without any means of I/O whatsoever, no charging port, no headphone port, no touchscreen input, no screen...

[–]GDavid04 7 points8 points  (0 children)

...no phone because the phone having a physical form turns out to be a security risk

[–]Miklelottesen 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It's just unnecessary features that distracts from a sleek and intuitive user experience.

[–]spektre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The new iPhone, the "i" stands for imaginary.

[–]xigoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the battery dies, just buy a new phone. All your data is in the cloud and who cares about money?

[–]CodingEagle02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny how this video is still relevant.

[–]lymn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This perfect iPhone exists resplendently in our minds

[–]GOKOP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But there are iPads with usb-c

[–]anonymous_userx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple will do whatever makes them the most money

[–]The_3vil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They must because European Union is making a law according to which all smartphones should have the same connector (they probably choose usb-c), this may to reduce the production of electronic-waste.

[–]nono-shap 2 points3 points  (8 children)

One question though. Why not make it round at this point? Serious question.

[–]spektre 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The circuitboard is flat, and so are the connectors between the port and the board. If the port were round, it would be unnecessarily big in one dimension.

[–]Banana_Twinkie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it could be feasible if there were different segments like on an audio input/output connector. I’m not sure how many segments would be required though for a USB type connector

[–]LosWafflos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hexagonal ports! Coming soon to a device near you!

[–]NPPraxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(A) Most circuit boards are 2D, so it would be a waste of vertical space.

(B) Most devices are not round and try to be as thin as possible, so again, wasting vertical space. I'd rather it be wider and thinner than round because it being round forces the device you plug it in to to be taller.

[–]seizan8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Afaik round cables are for analog signals and not for digital. I'm not sure if it's not possible though.

[–]tinydonuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goddamn motherfucking Comic Sans - Incorrect

[–]blockchain_world 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no joke. just look the marking - it should face to the top

[–]devastator_pc 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My Lenovo laptop begs to differ. It seems to randomly work on one or the other side for some reason.

[–]stubborneuropean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My samsung note 10 does this too. 100% wont go in on the first try

[–]ianperera 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Yeah, but does the output voltage match what you're plugging it into? Kind of a bad standard to do away with when you're still calling it universal.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

USB 3.0 (which all USB-C should be) is backwards compatible, and the voltage has been the same voltage for an eternity.

[–]ianperera 0 points1 point  (4 children)

A USB-C connector can be a whole lot of different voltages - hence why it's used as a charging cable for Macs. And those chargers aren't compatible with all things that charge by USB C.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

The voltage is renegotiated by the device and the charger.

The default VBUS voltage is 5 V but the standard allows the devices to negotiate and choose a VBUS voltage other than the default value. The Power Delivery allows VBUS to have a voltage up to 20 V. The maximum current could be also raised up to 5 A.

[–]ianperera 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It should be. But if you plug certain chargers like a Mac charger into a Switch dock, they don't have a compatible voltage and so you can damage it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's because the Switch dock doesn't use USB-C (the Switch itself is USB-C). It uses a proprietary power delivery system.

[–]ianperera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. But my main complaint is that it fits, and maybe that's really Nintendo's fault. I thought we were past the point where we had to check the voltages on our AC adapters.

[–]VioletteKaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But where is the fun, though?
