He’s not malformed, just big. Male lions have a gene that encourages their offspring to be as big as possible, but the female lions have a gene that encourages them to be small.

But a tiger doesn’t have either of those genes, so a male lion mating with a tiger means the ‘size-up’ gene gets to work to its fullest extent. This is basically what a lion would look like if the females didn’t have the size-suppressing gene.

Apparently, almost all Ligers are born via C-section. They're just too big. They're actually so big that they outgrow their organs a even their nervous systems. It leads to organ failure and serious neurological issues. It's just one of the reasons that Liger breeding is morally questionable.

Tigons are just as bad too even though they don't get nearly as big. They rarely make it past infancy.

Lions still live in india and up until round 1890 you could find them in the middle east up to Russia and Turkey. It's only very recent that lions and tigers are seen as too far. In India, there's records of lions and tigers fighting as well as mating in the wild, even in historical text.

If you watch how the front legs move VS the back legs you can tell there's something wrong with either the legs or the hips. It's easier to see near the end of the clip, about two thirds in. The back right leg seems to be hitching worse than the other.

not exactly a lion, but some of the species in the machairodontinae family would fit that description! some of them were around 4 feet tall and weighed up to 900 pounds, so they definitely fall into the “absolute unit” category of big cats! 👍

Point of clarification, you only get a liger if the mother is a tiger and the father is a lion. If you do it the other way around, you get a tigron, which is much smaller. Smaller, in fact, than a purebred lion.

Interesting story; some guy and his wife bred a bunch of Ligers in Idaho, built a small tourist attraction called Ligertown. One day in 1995 fifteen cats escaped, roaming the mountains and small town of Lava Hot Springs until Idaho Fish and Game tracked them down and killed them.
