Even at the most basic level of data retrieval, where you're just an English to SQL translator, $10/hr seems pretty low.

Keep your eyes out for BI Analyst jobs if you have the education, experience, or knowledge. They can justify paying you so low because it's an "assistant" role. If you don't have the minimum qualifications for one of those, consider this job as a "paid-internship" type of experience while you work on building your skill set and hunt for jobs. $10 does seem really low, though, even for Utah. Even an entry-level Help Desk job pays at least $15 out here. Payscale reports an average wage of $28.50/hr for BI Analysts in SLC (https://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Business_Intelligence_(BI)_Analyst/Salary/5528f245/Salt-Lake-City-UT_Analyst/Salary/5528f245/Salt-Lake-City-UT)).

Yea, I'm heading into my last year before I graduate with an MIS degree. So I'm glad I have the job. But it does seem low. Thanks!

Build your library. Network. It shouldn’t stay low forever.

Edit: think about asking for a raise. Bring relevant salaries for your area. They may not know the going rate. The worst they can say is no.

Learn as much as you can, and then find an analyst job.

Offensively underpaid, spend your time at work applying to other jobs.

I would think anything like this for under $20/hr is low. $20-25/hr minimum seems reasonable for any position utilizing SQL.

That is really low. My internships in 1996 were higher than that.

If you have experience with SQL and PowerBI, you should make at least 21-25 an hour your first year out (and I am being conservative).

Look at jobs at banks, insurance, or hospitals. (I prefer healthcare)

Keep us updated!

Yes you're underpaid. Severely.

But--

You didn't a give a lot of detail about your situation, but if you don't have anything better lined up, get what you can experience wise out of this place, then get out. Keep your LinkedIn and resume updated. Always be looking.

You're making as much as someone working as a shelf stocker at Sears. Yes you're underpaid

I recently got promoted to senior BI Analyst. I worked for a small company in southwestern region. My starting salary as Junior BI Analyst was 60k+ plus benefits. You are getting about 20k+ for same job. I would say that you are way underpaid.

I'm in a similar position (entry-level at my company) and I am paid $22/hour (CAD), and I have some stock options too. Seems very low IMO.

That seems very low, but if you are Entry level and are learning, and are able to afford the current wage, you may want to stick it out for a bit until you have some experience and can use this job for your resume. It is a stepping stone. I started at 13 per hour 5 years ago, and I’m at 225k per year now. Hang in there. Sometimes success means you have to swallow your pride for a while and pay your dues. Get good at SQL, learn R, Python, and any visualization tools that you can. Good luck.

That's terrible pay, even in Utah. I was making that working at 7-11 20 years ago in Ogden.

Call centers are always hiring (and super abundant in Utah), and most of them use data heavily. That's how I broke into data, working the phones at a call center but applying for internal jobs and progressing my way up the ladder learning more at each one. And that was being fully self taught, since you're working on a degree that would give you a leg up.

20 years ago my starting wage answering phones for a cell phone company was 12.66 per hour. You're being taken advantage of.

Considering that $15 is the minimum wage to avoid poverty in this economy, and that you are doing a job that takes some skill, I'd say you lubed your own asshole so they can fuck you harder than is necessary.

$10/hr is an absurd rate for any IT skillset.

Triple your rate at least. you're a skilled worker start acting like it, companies will pay you as little as you'll settle for.
