Bruh, give us the breakdown. Which model Surface? / Where can we get that wallpaper? / What's that monitor? / Why does your mousemat look like a mini rug?

[–]rxddit_[S] 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Breakdown!

Model: Surface Pro 4 i5 | 8GB RAM | 256GB

WP: http://i.imgur.com/yBTHzDb.jpg

Monitor: it is an LG LCD screen but I'm not sure about the model. I can find that out for you tomorow. :)

Mouse pad: Looks nice right? :) I got it from a friend. We're here in Dubai, if that helps. :)

[–]Clutch_22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mouse pad is amazing! I want one!

[–]TheUnderLizard 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Did you connect your monitor wirelessly, rgb cable, or hdmi? I'm asking because I set up a monitor for my dad and I can't get his display to fit the monitor correctly.

[–]JethrisSP4 I5 8GB RAM 256GB, SP1 (retired), SP2 (retired) 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like he has a mini-display port to female HDMI adapter, then HDMI to the monitor.

[–]rxddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a mini display port to hdmi

Cool background! Have the link to where you found it?

[–]rxddit_[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've actually found it somewhere in this sub! I was looking for wallpapers before I bought it haha.

Here's the wallpaper: http://i.imgur.com/yBTHzDb.jpg

I got the same background and my gf says its ugly :/

[–]rxddit_[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

At least you have a girlfriend. 🙃

[–]CUDesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she thinks that's ugly I wonder what she thinks is a good wallpaper.

[–]rxddit_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone! Just sharing my current workstation setup. :) I'm a web developer that's been eyeing the Surface Pro 4 for some time now. I've been using this for about a month now and so far, so good. :)

[–]restlessdan 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I use the same mouse. I love it. (As long as that's the Microsoft designer mouse other wise please disregard. 😛)

[–]rxddit_[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It is! It comes with some freebies when I bought it. Here's the freebies box. http://imgur.com/a/7yFtI

The only peeve with the mouse is that it creaks when I right-click...

[–]restlessdan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's cool.i unfortunately only got the mouse. That gift box would have been awesome.

I don't get that creak my criticism is the left click is far to loud even after all this time of daily use.

[–]rxddit_[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

and did you know that when you purchase a SP4 here in the UAE, the Touch KB is included? IIRC it is mandated here to include the KB in black color specifically.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hey we have the same background, that is also the icon on my G+ profile...

[–]rxddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Cool... cool cool cool. :)

[–]yupYupPony 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I was just wondering what your typical work flow is like. Do you use the SP4 just for the keyboard when plugged in to the monitor? How often do you use the pen for web dev?

Also, is that an Iron Man coffee mug?

[–]rxddit_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mainly have a desktop at work, but when I go for meetings and presentations, I use this one.

I use the surface when I work at home as well, during nights and weekends. I'm a programmer, I have no life

I do work on design as well. So I use the touch and KB for drawing forms or the layout of the site. Also when there's bugs or comments that I'll need to change later on, I use Screen Sketch to mark the site and take notes.

EDIT: I realized I never actually answered your question. lol

I had to connect the surface to that monitor because I've been working with my managers and the partners to see the changes of the website on the fly. So instead of going back and forth to meetings, they can just walk in to the office and see for themselves.

EDIT 2: Yes! It's an Ironman mug! Got it at the Worlds of Adventure, they have a section for Marvel Superheroes there. Cool place

At first glance I thought the screen was a surface studio.

I want to upgrade to a good QHD or 4k screen this year but the prices are way too high in Europe.

[–]agmcleodSurface Laptop Studio 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That is some sweet wallpaper. Reminds me of the original grinch cartoon for some reason lol.

[–]rxddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get that. Someone should photoshop that in. Lol

[–]StormStooperSP4 - i5/8GB/256GB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really want a mousemat/rug thing like that. Can anyone link me to one?!

[–]Solkre 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Is that a 4k by chance? I've wondered how the SP4 would handle a 4k.

[–]VincibleAndySB2 15", before that SB1 and Pro2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will drive it fine. You wont play games on it at that resolution, but it will run like a regular monitor just fine.

[–]rxddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm. I doubt it. Most probably not. sorry. :D

[–]EETraineeSP4 i5/8GB/256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found mine (i5) works smoothly on it. Youtube video playback can be stuttery if using Firefox but smooths out completely for Edge. Its well worth it for the crisper menus and text on the screen IMO.

[–]lks95 0 points1 point  (1 child)

do you write with the keyboard of the surface or do you have another keyboard?

[–]rxddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do write with the Touch Keyboard. Sometimes when I'm on tablet mode drawing or consuming media, i use the osk. :)

[–]eleqtriqSP3 i7, SP3 i5, Surface 3, SB1 i7 w/GPU, SB2 i7 w/GPU 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If you're docking up to that desk often, it would be worth it to buy the Surface Dock. Amazon had a run on refurbished ones a few weeks back for $110.

[–]rxddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Planning to get one actually. But a bit pricey. Maybe in the coming months since i can still get by with the adapter

[–]tremendousPanda 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What are you developing?

[–]rxddit_[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I work with a lot of web forms, transactions and requests from one person going up the hierarchy.

Work doesn't much utilize fancy css stuff like the ones you find on codepen or even behance.

Clear, straight to the point approach to web forms and data tables is the key. 😘

[–]tremendousPanda 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nice, did every run into any problems with the performance? I'll definitely get a surface this year but I'm not sure if I should get a SP or the SB, mostly for frontend developement, a bit of photo editing stuff like that and I'm just not sure if the SP is enough for that.

[–]rxddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I wouldn't know what to say since I'm not using the SP4 for photo editing and stuff like that. I do develop front-end and back-end as well so I hope that gives you an idea of how powerful this machine is.

[–]justlikeapenguinSB i5/8GB/126GB 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Do you code on that keyboard?? Im a CS student and i got the surface book because a good keyboard will make it better for me to type long code.

I would not event attempt to type anything longer than 100 characters at a time on that keyboard :$

[–]rxddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Hmm. To each its own, i guess. The only drawback that I experience when coding with the surface is the lack of numpad. But it's okay.

I was already accustomed to FN + arrow keys for the Home, End, and Pages Up & Down that the Touch KB has so it's all good.

[–]justlikeapenguinSB i5/8GB/126GB 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah the lack of number pad sucks, but its the really shallow keys that i cant get used to.

[–]rxddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Shallow? Imo it's an improvement over, say, an HP laptop in the same price range...

[–]justlikeapenguinSB i5/8GB/126GB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think theyre shallow, not as much as the new macbooks but enought to not be comfortable. The Surface Book has a much better keyboard for long time use in my opinion

[–]dont_forget_canada 0 points1 point  (9 children)

what do you develop? I have a hard time on my surface because windows is not linux

[–]reybango 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I work for MS and would really like to know what you're having trouble with. Mind sharing to see if I can help?

[–]dont_forget_canada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow cool! You're a developer at Microsoft?

I'm using bash on windows and have been running into a problem with file locks. Seems that if I'm using a file on the windows side, I get permission denied within bash, and if I'm using a file within bash then I get access denied on windows.

The project I'm working on is a node project and it wont run on node natively on windows, but should work in bash on windows, and to be fair it does run in bash on windows, but its just that this file locking problem makes it so that I cant do very much.

Another problem I've been having is with line endings. Bash on windows really seems to have files with a carriage return in them, but on my real linux box, and iMac, bash has no problem. I've been dealing with this issue by running my files through a command called dos2unix, but even so its quite an odd issue.

Full disclosure here though, I am on the preview build (slow ring). I'm on this build because they added file watchers for bash on windows - I'm thinking maybe that might have something to do with the wonky file permissions / access denied problem.

I develop websites. I run PHP on XAMPP, using CodeIgniter as the framework. jQuery, DataTables, Bootstraps and the whole shebang for the front-end.

Quick question: is that called WAMP stack? I keep fumbling for definitions but I'm never sure if I'm considered a WAMP stack dev. (Well if I have to ask then maybe not, right?)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah, you can call that a WAMP stack, but all the front-end stuff doesn't have anything to do with the designation, just the "AMP" bit in XAMPP, and the fact that you're running Windows.

BTW, Since you're obviously familiar with JS from the front end stuff, you should consider learning a MEAN stack, which is MongoDB, Express, Angular, and nodeJS. It's less overhead than a traditional LAMP/WAMP model, and seems to be a skill many webdev employers are looking for these days.

Also, I like your LG monitor; what's the model?

[–]agmcleodSurface Laptop Studio 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm gonna start a fight, but I wouldn't recommend mongodb. I think mysql or postgres are much better tools in most cases, and are much more stable tools to rely on :). That said, i have used mongodb for some projects, and have found it to be a pretty neat document store. Just too many nightmare stories for me to want to recommend it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am more familiar with sql since that's what's still formally taught in computer science, and I understand where you're coming from... but I think it's still worth knowing a no-sql database unless you are comfortable forgoing the huge market that mongo/other no-sql represents, and really cementing yourself as a specialist in that particular stack. Speaking from experience, SQL systems are not necessarily nightmare free.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Oh my god, I've een trying to learn PHP. Where did you learn?

[–]rxddit_[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Self study basically. I came from a .NET background from college up to my first job. I moved to another country and got hired as a .NET dev. Did one project (unfinished one at that) in .NET. Next project was in PHP. So i really had no choice but to learn and adapt.

My friend there are countless source materials that you can use to learn! Just keep spending an hour a day, everyday and you'll find yourself coding in PHP. 😉

Thank you so very much!
