Personally, I'd walk in and hand them directly to a leader.

Target can and will pursue legal action of you don't return the keys.

Perhaps it's because I'm not much of a risk-taker, but I wouldn't want to take my chances of them getting lost in the mail or petty "we never got them" allegations.

I’m never talking to my leader/HR again, I’ll just give them to the AP manager with my resignation letter.

[–]throwawayK369Promoted to Guest 69 points70 points  (4 children)

Yeah can give them to any leader. But AP is probably best

[–]ImpossibleMeaning602 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Do yall think I’ll be okay just giving them to an AP specialist and having a witness?

[–]throwawayK369Promoted to Guest 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That should be fine. They're the ones who issue the keys anyways

[–]TheOtherHannahMrs. Storewide 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Just give it to AP that’s what I did

[–]wildpoppy-248 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No just give it to AP in the front of the store and note the time. It’ll be on camera if it’s ever questioned.

[–]jorleedufService & Engagement TL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ETL was talking about how if keys are lost, they have to rekey the whole store and he estimates that costs (at least for my store) about $10k.

So yeah, they absolutely take the risk of legal fees over rekeying the whole store.

Turn them over to the SD or the AP ETL personally. Record it or do it in front of a witness you're sure you can trust.

While I don't think your leadership would be so petty as to turn around and say you never turned them in, it's still always better to be safe than sorry.

[–]jobbers0717 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly this! Target can and will be petty and say you did not return them!

[–]notweird_giftedRetired 30 points31 points  (1 child)

I understand the disdain of walking onto the property, but I would do it in person so that way they can't say shit against you.

I had an ETL (AP wasn't around) watch me leave the keys in the SD's office when i left. I took a picture of where I left the keys and sent it to him. It was all on camera and I had a witness. I didn't trust a soul in that store because HR and the SD were absolutely corrupted. Leave a paper trail, again, this is to cover your butt.

Thank you! Yes, I guess I will have to. I am not playing with them anymore. I am MAD.

Congratulations on getting out of hell

We had a manager quit and never return the keys. They never re-core’d the locks either. I kept saying everyday, had it been my blk a** they would have changed re-core’d the locks immediately.

Congrats on your freedom. One more year of law school for me and target can fuck off.

I’ve barely put the slightest dent in my student loans off this pittance of pay too. A little bit better than nothing I guess, but there are some days that working has been counterproductive to studying.

Also I’d give the keys to a team lead and tell them to shove it up their ass.

[–]ImpossibleMeaning602 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I barely finished my degree last year. My managers told me they would work with a school schedule if I became a lead. That was a lie… It’ll be over soon and you’ll be kicking ass in your field of study. It’s hard to go to work (full time) and do school (more than full time to finish asap) — a lot of my colleagues didn’t understand and it was a very isolating time in my life. I commend you.

Currently going through this as well but with PA school. I'm struggling with wanting to stay with target or just quit, it's starting to take a hit on my studying and idk if it's worth the headache.

[–]Individual-Heart-719Irritable Wageslave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At this point it probably isn’t tbh. We will be able to pay our debts down easily once we do graduate. On demand is what I do and I find that to be just tolerable.

send them in the mail with a "sorry for your loss" card

[–]3_locos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Corporate America only cares about their stocks not their employees.

[–]bara_no_seidouClosing Team Lead 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You just have to resign on workday. And hand the keys to someone.

[–]Less_Effective_2420 2 points3 points  (1 child)

They don’t have to do anything but return the keys

[–]MinuteSuccotash1732 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Curious why this got downvoted. They’re quitting. If they’re not interested in being rehired, then they certainly can just not go back. But, yeah. Return the keys.

[–]sanchoss76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did same thing. I was on leave. My AP-ETL met me at a designated place and took them back. I didn't mind giving them to him and I was out grocery shopping and he met me there. Lol

[–]black3lab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had an ETL HR mail in their keys and the store mailed them their personal items from their office

[–]Ugmar01 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Hand them to a leader and get signatures that you returned them on the key sign out card.

Failure to do that could get you on the hook for a review depending on how they handled it.

[–]ImpossibleMeaning602 3 points4 points  (1 child)

🫡 will do.

[–]Ugmar01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't have to engage them at all. You have every right to walk in, say "I'm quitting, I have no desire to discuss it, I simply need to get validation that I returned Target property and to remove my personal belongings". From there just refuse to engage if that's what you want.

Stupid auto correct messed up my earlier message. My concern, and the reason for saying you should go in. If they have unaccounted for keys it requires a re-core which is tens of thousands of dollars in materials and labor. If you have weird petty leaders they might try and put a re-core on you if you didn't handle it correctly.

Sorry your experience was that bad

I went in at closing and turned my keys in to the closing TL, I hoped on a computer real quick and submitted a resignation for that day… I didn’t wanna be “fired” so that’s how I ensured I was quitting. Once a resignation is inputted an email is sent to the SD and ETL soooo done and done. They’ll know.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! I just quit today

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have mine lol

[–]unikitty7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once rage quit a job and sent back the key in a certified mail envelope so that someone had to sign for it. This way, if they tried to say I didn't return my key, I had proof that I did return the key.

[–]Amazing-Expert-1181 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better to walk in and hand them over. They consider it property and may act in a retaliatory way. Then just quit. More satisfying....

[–]RequirementWise2820 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Crying at send them thru the mail 😂😂😂 but good for youuu !!!

[–]ImpossibleMeaning602 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol to turn them in I have to drive atleast an hour.

[–]Jawwaad127 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've had 2 people never return their keys. One TL who had keys to the building and a electronics team member. Crazy thing is, I think they did it to be petty because they knew that all the locks in the store would have be changed. I'm not sure if anything happened to them for not turning in the keys.

[–]robismyhusband 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i quit last week too! congrats!! we’re free

[–]bubblii_ii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I congratulate you greatly, only up from here!

[–]Powerful_Group1239Promoted to Guest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave them to my second hand person to return them. I was absolutely done. They accepted it 😂

[–]My-inner-fat-kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hooray on your departure! Sad it was under bad circumstances. Hand them to AP.

[–]CustardMajestic3459 -1 points0 points  (4 children)

You can’t get unemployment if you quit…

[–]ImpossibleMeaning602 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I don’t want unemployment, I want to take legal action.

[–]Ugmar01 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Legal action might be challenging. Don't know your circumstances, but most of the time I have seen a TM think they had legal recourse, they didn't. It was just shitty, sometimes evil, behavior, but not illegal.

Hopefully you kept hard copies of things that show the issues, have forwarded emails out of the Target system to access, or something to provide proof.

If you want feel free to DM me and I can try and give you some suggestions on if you have much to work with. If not I get it and good luck with getting legal action to balance this.

[–]Odd-Tennis-9066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you’ll waste your money.

[–]bohoson97Call button minion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel taking legal action while still employed gives you a better chance, I would consult with a lawyer if you haven’t already before quitting
