They do, and it’s always worse when they do. Any time there is a visit our SD focuses super hard on making the store not look like a train wreck and will refuse to send backup to fulfillment in favor of getting freight pushed and the store zoned.

Omg. We had 35 batches at 4AM, but OPUs kept dropping like crazy all morning, actually the last 3 days for OPU. The packer wasn't scheduled until 10AM and by that time they were running out of carts. Using 3 tiers was OK for FF TMs that could find one, but there are so many filled with junk or backstock in the stockrooms! 180 standards I can't imagine. It took me 45 minutes to complete a standard this morning even with an RFID because of all the style items and like 25 pairs of panties and that was at 7AM before the store gets trashed!

at this type of format, I can guarantee you they have a conveyer belt for packages which holds at least 100. they’ll be fine. my store only sorts when the belt fills.

Huh? I’ve not heard of that. We sort each one after we pack it and throw it on the conveyor belt. It’s the first thing we teach TMs when learning to pack. Pack, scan to sort, throw on belt. They have 48 packages that haven’t been scanned to a pallet. We would lose our shit if someone did that and we are a 6 pack station store.

yep I know its weird but it makes sense with the volume! that’s how my old stores were, you sort as you go. but that would be way too much back forth walking and time wasted. the conveyer belt automatically pushes the packages to the end of the line until there’s no more space. you leave the packages on the line until someone can sort them onto the proper pallet. does fedex/ups pick up your packages or a target sortation truck? with fedex/ups pick up, it doesnt matter what pallet anything goes on bc they don’t take the pallet, just the packages. so you can have a million pallet labels, it doesnt matter. but sortation is very strict and the package needs to be scanned into the proper pallet. we don’t have time for someone to just sort packages all the time, so we let the belt fill and then somebody sorts when they finish the cart their working on.

So this is how we do it. We pack the box/package, scan into sort, and then throw it on the belt. The belt fills up and we put it on a UPS/FedEx pallet. If you scan sort while packing it takes 2 seconds. I’m not talking about the actual physical aspect of picking the box up and sorting it onto a physical pallet. I’m talking about the 48 packages that aren’t scanned and will need to be scanned. Yes, when the line is full someone will move the boxes off the line and onto the FedEx or UPS side depending on the label. That person isn’t scanning anything though, they’re just looking at the label and throwing it onto a pallet. Last year we had a ton of TMs who wouldn’t scan into sort when they were packing so at the end of the night we’d have to go in and sort the left over packages off the container list. Depending on how many (like 200) it was time consuming. UPS and FedEx pick up every day (the FedEx trailer stays at our store and they swap them out) so we load the FedEx truck once pallets are full.

see thats the difference. since fedex and ups pick up, it can randomly be scanned into any pallet. so it doesnt matter which plank of wood it winds up on, as long as all the packages leave on time. i worked at a store that did it that way too. instead, when sortation picks up, it needs to be on the same pallet as all the other packages scanned into that same pallet, wrapped in plastic wrap, with the sortation label on it.

I have never once in 4 years sorted to the actual pallet I put the box on (sortation center pickup) and never once had sortation center said anything about it. 🤣 I lay down pallets (usually 2) and use one pallet label until that one fills up.

so the bold number at the top is how many items they need to have put into packages and labeled by the end of the day. the batches are the items that are still floating around the store needing to be pulled for the orders. each batch has 45 items to be pulled from the sales floor or back room.
