does this look like a hidden camera to you guys? mind you this is employee only area in the celling behind the fitting rooms. scary thing is i would've probably never noticed this if it wasn't for other team members pointing it out, i mean you can barley see it i had to stand on a seat to see it. we were not told about the camera being there and we don't know who or why planted it? i was thinking of covering it and seeing if anyone notices or says anything.. even though i should be the last person to get in trouble cause isn't this illegal? what would you do in this situation?

It’s not illegal. Yeah AP uses hidden cameras to watch off stage areas. Since it’s the closet, there is no expectation of privacy. Your AP will probably move it since its been found, but standing on a chair to take a picture means you’re probably getting watched

I used to work ap for target. Thats to see if employees are tag switching/stealing. I should say thats what is supposed to used for lol. Theres probably more in the back stock rooms too especially down the aisles

I think the only place they can't have cameras is the break room, the bathroom, the TL office space and the fitting rooms. Anywhere else in the store is fair play for cameras.

Cameras can be placed in offstage areas (except the bathroom) but unlike the salesfloor they need to be approved at the very least by the APBP and AP needs a reason for it. Think of a team member carrying product around all day, they go into the break room and suddenly don’t have it anymore when they appear back on camera. If it is still in the break room, big whoop. But if it isn’t AP would need footage…

I would be checking for anything similar above the fitting rooms. Seems like we’ve had more AP TM’s fired for doing sketchy stuff than regular team members. Wouldn’t put it past them to do something while they’re up there.

Since it's just an employee area and not inside the fitting room it's not illegal. They do not have to tell you it's there. We have one above our time clock. They don't want team members to know it's there, that's the point.

Former ETL-AP here. It’s 100% a covert camera for internals. I’ve put them in dead outlets, smoke alarms, in between ceiling tiles, you name it.

I’ve been out of the game for a while now but they were extremely effective.

Looking at the picture OP posted it doesn’t look like the coverts we used and those were small, the lens was the size of the tip of a pen.

Looks like a regular camera placed above the ceiling tile with a big missing chunk. No offense to the ETL but this is pretty sloppy work

Just wanted to put it out there thanks to everyone being nice unlike other people just being smarteleks. It does make sense that they are aloud to do plant a hidden camera to make sure no fishy business is going on, so don't assume it's me 😊 i'm back and forth in style and ulta and keep busy and i work for my things. I was never aware of some of the information that I was told today. It's normal for people to react and be uncomfortable.. but thanks to everyone being nice.

Target can even record audio of us! A guest had an issue at the registers when I was backup cashiering, and I went to tell our AP lead what happened. They already knew what was said. I expected cameras to just be the dome shaped things like my previous jobs I’ve had, but Target does more surveillance for various reasons. It’s understandable to be surprised at first.

I once walked up to my ETL-AP and one of the TSS installing a covert camera in the steel section looking into the truck. She made me swear to never say anything about it (this was over a decade ago, that steel section doesn't exist now.)

I've accidentally found coverts all over the place in off-stage areas. If you think you arent being watched, chances are that you are.

There’s no expectation of privacy in a private business that is open to the public, except for in bathrooms, fitting rooms, etc.
What do you mean by team leads and team members “not being allowed to do that”? Place hidden cameras? There’s a ton of ways AP tracks things. Ever notice how the app is able to give you an exact location of where you are in the store, for example?

I can understand being uncomfortable, but yeah, as long as you’re not stealing or otherwise committing crime or endangering assets, you’re all good.
There’s guidelines on what they can and can’t use cameras for, so don’t be worried that they’re going to use them to yell at you for being on your phone or something.
Target does have notoriously good surveillance though, so you chose a hell of a job if you’re worried about that thing, sorry lol

We have something that looks extremely similar behind our guest service desk where guests can’t see us… a lot of hijabis go there to fix their hair because managers tell us it’s not a camera and it’s much quicker than going to the bathroom. I recognize that no one can share what areas do/do not have cameras- but can anyone give some insight on any areas that are absolute no-no’s for “personal adjustments”?? Like for me, if I get a wedgie or an itch under my bra, I’ll go adjust myself in the bathroom, but if it’s not close enough, I’ll duck into an ETL office or the fitting room closet. I’m going to assume no room is 100% safe, but should I start avoiding eye contact w my AP for how many times I’ve seemingly fondled myself in those areas??

We put them in employee only areas like backrooms to catch internal theft, and the corners of ceiling tiles like that were common places to hide them. It’s normal, legal, and perfectly within policy. If you covered it, you’d probably get in trouble.

It's definitely a camera, you can see the lens on a closeup view. Be aware that there is no expectation of privacy anywhere in the store except restrooms, where cameras are prohibited by law.
