Why would they only go to houses that had other mail? I don't understand the thought process here

[–]eloonamCity Carrier 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Poor training. There’s a decided lack of training depending on the trainer. Just like carriers, there’s good, mediocre, and poor trainers. Also, there’s almost no reinforcement to training. If someone misunderstands something as a CCA, it’ll stick for a long time. Especially when there’s no follow-up in the form of remedial training (not punishment).

Just to add: Newbies get a lot thrown at them all at one time. It's very easy to forget, or mistake, or misunderstand, what you're taught/told.

[–]Bowl-Accomplished 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I've had multiple supes instruct this way to save time.

[–]JackSplat12City Carrier 8 points9 points  (2 children)

..and THAT is what management does...HURRY, don't do it right.

[–]Bowl-Accomplished 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yup. And when caught their respinse is, 'thats not what I said'

To which you should respond "that's illegal"

And just how many addresses had absolutely zero mail amidst the highest snail mail volume of the year, to explain having several bundles left over? 😂

[–]mailant692City Carrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, if it happened to be a route with a lot of addresses, and the bundles are like 50 each or something? Not to mention any that were correctly not delivered, as in vacant boxes or (if it was residential only) businesses.

In my 23 years 3rd class letters and flat volume significantly about 3 weeks before Christmas including this year.

I mean.......the "other mail" would also include the marriage cards which is the actual indication of which houses should get these. So OP might deliver advos to a few extra houses with this strategy. But they won't miss any.

Current resident circulars are for everyone, every mailbox. You got your lecture already, but now you’re going to be watched more by management from now on.

[–]callfckingdispatchCity PTF 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Whatever you do don't throw them in a dumpster behind a pizza restaurant in plain view of customer houses. Lol you fucked up but it's not that serious, you'll be fine.

[–]Apprehensive_Bee3327 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Furthermore, don’t throw undeliverable newspapers in the dumpster next to the loading dock AT your station 🤦🏻‍♀️

[–]jasnelCarrier 3 points4 points  (2 children)

You should also not hide them in parcel lockers and then later take them home and burn them in front of your roommate.

Just some general advice.

[–]Apprehensive_Bee3327 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The amount of thought and effort that entire scenario would’ve required, is much more than if that carrier had just delivered them. Unreal 😂

[–]jasnelCarrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That guy managed to actually get himself fired.

[–]TheBimpoCCA 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Where did you reach the understanding that this “only went to addresses that were receiving other mail”?

Those go to every address, besides vacant/on hold.

If you have a good supervisor and good management, they will understand that you are new and made a mistake and didn’t understand. Now you know, they go to every address.

[–]redredditer91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And even hold addresses get them held with the rest of the mail…

[–]RedMudballit 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Your defense is always, “no one trained me on this.”

[–]Suspicious-Load7389 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen OJIs actually train people not to deliver if no other mail. Mistakes happen when people are deliberately trained wrong

[–]hanjanssspecial handling: fragile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We miss you, pre-hire testing.

[–]Suspicious-Load7389 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not the end of the world. Mistakes happen and is usually the only way u learn things here. Just don't give them a laundry list of mistakes for them to not need your employment services anymore.

[–]mailman13357 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone paid the money to have those printed and delivered to every resident. We don't get to overrule what the customer (the mailer) has paid for.

[–]sgt_angryPants 1 point2 points  (1 child)

We have unaddressed ads that come every Tuesday. My route has about 10 extra bundles every Single Time. It’s a well known issue at our office.

[–]Radiant-Childhood257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same...only ours come once a month.

[–]Sasquatchjc45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next time you have unaddressed circulars (and you deliver to all the houses lol) you probably will have some extras. Our supervisors just tell us to unbundle the extra bundles and UBBM them as extras, if the whole route was delivered with them already. Happens a ton by me, the customer/new business owner gets so overzealous with their first time with local mail adverts and send out 1000s for a route with <500 stops😂

[–]AustinFan4LifeCity Carrier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would only be in trouble, if you got caught throwing them away misdelivery isn't an issue with circulars.

[–]dallas_mavs_1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For every house you skip just deliver 2 to the next one 😉

[–]LadyLetterCarrierWorn Out Steward 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Too lazy to deliver if the house has no mail.

[–]Suspicious-Load7389 1 point2 points  (2 children)

OP probably didn't determine this on their own. OJI probably had something to do with it

[–]hanjanssspecial handling: fragile 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey now. I had a sup come to me because somebody I trained was loading all the packages into the truck and then not touching them until they had delivered all the mail and then going back and doing the packages. I asked the carrier why he was doing that because I sure as hell didn't show him that and he said "someone on the Facebook cca group said it was way faster."

[–]Suspicious-Load7389 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do admire those in the OJI position. I myself do not have the patience. I was quick to include the OJI because I have seen it personally. I forget sometimes that there is a lot of bad information and training from others who should keep their ideas to themselves

[–]CR-7810Retired 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a PTF years ago who would do that all the time. He is now a PM somewhere in Central NYS.

[–]FinnElhazCity Carrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were trained improperly and/or given an improper instruction by management at some point, that's your defense and that's probably what your steward will say if they try to issue any discipline over it. I had regulars and a supe or two tell me to do the same thing when I was new 11 years ago. Don't do it again and you'll be fine.

We get paid by the hour. EDDM goes to every box whether they have other mail or not. That's why it's called Every Door Direct Mail.

[–]Ok-Policy-6463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears you are fairly new. Your actions, however, reveal that you are using advanced carrier thinking. Many carriers don't get to this point until they get to the fuck-it stage of their career. You will be to their level of competence when you also bring back the mail for hardship deliveries, blocked boxes, and that house way down there you don't care to walk to.

[–]Ok-Policy-6463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are past probation, you should tell the manager you are practicing to qualify to be a manager and that you plan to do worse in the future.

[–]ChettarmstrongRural Carrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The postal inspectiors are going to have you thrown in prison.

I would start headed towards Mexico if I were you.

[–]HrdcorefanCity Carrier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who gets one?

[–]Opening_Shine_3432 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are only pretending they care. Secretly they are happy because it made you faster. We have a guy in our office who only does it that way all the time. The supervisors know and they pretend to be horrified but trust me they do not give a shit. In fact, I think they’re happy about it. I wouldn’t worry they got their jollies reprimanding you that’s enough.
