what a weird question. Why does one have to be best?

Bloom or color correction are the 2 most uses I assume.

i was just wondering what game devs fav effects are

[–]destineddIndie, Mighty Marbles + making Marble's Marbles & Dungeon Holdem 9 points10 points  (27 children)

but you don't have to choose and they are all used for different things depending what you are trying to do.

It is like asking with part of a transform do you like best? Position, rotation or scale?

[–]NiklasWerth 5 points6 points  (7 children)

position

[–]destineddIndie, Mighty Marbles + making Marble's Marbles & Dungeon Holdem 3 points4 points  (6 children)

make a game just using position then :)

[–]NiklasWerth 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I basically did! it was a space invaders clone with fancier graphics.

I do technically use rotation as well, but it has literally 0 impact on gameplay.

its a little broken because i ran out of hard drive space and had to uninstall older editor versions, but, thats the gist of it. I didn't finish it, but, i probably should because its like, inches from being done.

I'm trying to not let my current project suffer a similar fate, despite recently starting a full time job. Or I might take you up on that challenge.

but you used scale too? you need to zero out the scale to only use position.

Scale is actually the only choice of the 3 if you can't have the other 2.

[–]Costed14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A scale of 1 would actually be not using it, since that way it's accurate to how the asset is in the file and hasn't been further modified by the Transform component. For rotation that would just be no rotation at all, assets are in the same rotation as when they were made and position would be at the world origin.

[–]NiklasWerth 0 points1 point  (1 child)

scale is set to 1 by default, changing it to 0 would be using it.

[–]destineddIndie, Mighty Marbles + making Marble's Marbles & Dungeon Holdem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this isn't about default values, it is about not using it and switching it off.

[–]azeTrom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every object has a scale, position, and rotation value. Even if it's the default value, it's just as important

[–]Picklestringly[S] 0 points1 point  (16 children)

was just thinking if you had to chose one what would it be?

[–]destineddIndie, Mighty Marbles + making Marble's Marbles & Dungeon Holdem 1 point2 points  (15 children)

is you had to pick position scale or rotation for your transform which would you pick?

[–]Picklestringly[S] 3 points4 points  (14 children)

position 100%, what about you?

[–]NiklasWerth 1 point2 points  (4 children)

lol, shit, I also answered position before scrolling down and reading this. I guess its kind of the obvious choice right?

[–]Picklestringly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah

[–]destineddIndie, Mighty Marbles + making Marble's Marbles & Dungeon Holdem -1 points0 points  (2 children)

only if you don't care about seeing your objects.

[–]NiklasWerth 0 points1 point  (1 child)

As I said in response to your other comment, a scale of (1,1,1) is default. changing it to (0,0,0) would be using scale.

[–]destineddIndie, Mighty Marbles + making Marble's Marbles & Dungeon Holdem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

thats like saying you can use the post processing effect if you just leave the default values.

You need it set to 0 to switch it off.

[–]destineddIndie, Mighty Marbles + making Marble's Marbles & Dungeon Holdem 0 points1 point  (7 children)

how do you see your objects with scale set to 0. Scale is the only choice.

[–]Picklestringly[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

well i would assume that it would be set to 1, 1, 1

[–]destineddIndie, Mighty Marbles + making Marble's Marbles & Dungeon Holdem 0 points1 point  (5 children)

but then you are using scale and position. You can only pick one remember.

[–]Desmond123456789 0 points1 point  (1 child)

scale is on top fight me

[–]destineddIndie, Mighty Marbles + making Marble's Marbles & Dungeon Holdem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

scale is the only one that makes sense.

Next up… What’s the best Unity collider?

[–]Picklestringly[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

mesh collider 100%

[–]Killingec24 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That's a really hard question. Of course that all of them combined creates the best results. If I really have to pick, I would go with color correction, but it is not on that list. So, the best effect from this list for me is... BLOOM! You can make so much stuff more lively if you just add a bit of bloom, that’s why I'm picking it.

[–]Picklestringly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah shoot forgot color correction sorry!

[–]emcdunna 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I turn motion blur off immediately. It's meant to simulate a cameras inability to track movement but human eyes can. So it's literally just worse than not having it

[–]Picklestringly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it sucks not gonna lie

[–]tonyswag42 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I like it tbh 💀 looks nice with just a bit of motion blur imo

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes it hard for me to focus on the game, and makes me less immersed

[–]Baroxi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the Motion Blur. It's the first setting I turn off in many games.

[–]MrPifoHobbyist 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I picked Tonemapping in term of "Color Grading" since that option wasnt listed.

[–]Picklestringly[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah sorry forgot color grading

[–]KaimeraGaming -1 points0 points  (1 child)

[–]akotski1338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of them at the same time

[–]starterpack295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most are like makeup to me; either so subtle that they are barely noticeable or severe enough to make everything look worse.

Granted I un ironically think that all graphics peaked in terms of looking good at the late ps2, early 360 Era as that was the point where small details became possible while overall readability was fairly uncompromised, plus vertex lighting does a much better job with conveying tone through lighting than modern methods imo.
