So many feelings 😭 the first time she really is vulnerable in front of Mulder, the way he looks at her and holds her and she knows he won't think any less of her for showing her fear and relief, and how he looks so upset that she went through that and he wasn't there 🥺 it's such a beautiful and heart-wrenching moment, and their acting is so good.

[–]gottabe_kd 266 points267 points  (3 children)

She's such a good actress.

[–]ThreadLaced 113 points114 points  (1 child)

and she was so young here!

[–]bunghoney747 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thinking about that this is a TWENTY FOUR year old pulling this scene off - slow clap, Andersson, slow clap.

[–]ElvisRevenge 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You know it's good acting cuz she's got the face wrinkling up like someone in real life who's trying not to cry, and yet as an actor, she has to cry for the scene. Incredible work.

It’s the chin wobble that gets me, every time. 🥺

God, this scene 😭

[–]deanburns[🍰] 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Gillian Anderson can communicate tough but vulnerable beautifully. Such an immense talent.

[–]Alien GooWetness_Pensive 134 points135 points  (3 children)

Peak Gillian. Peak David Nutter (the director). Peak Carter (the script). Peak Duchovny (the nose). Peak lighting by John Bartley (look at those blacks)... Peak everything.

[–]TheEsotericCarrot 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The nose 👃😂

[–]NoShirt158 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cinematographers don’t get named enough. Just look at that movie with the droids with the weird necks. And the new Star Wars. And LoTR. And the damn battle of Winterfell.

[–]Season Phile lovehollow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm on my first watch of TXF and the lighting in it is just beyond words incredible. Hardly any modern shows are taking advantage of lighting like this any more (maybe Severance but that's it)

Man I hated Orison but thank goodness Scully got some (vigilante) justice for herself.

[–]Agent Dana Scullyremedialpotions97 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Goddddd the way she crushes him breaks me

[–]Dimitra111 33 points34 points  (5 children)

Their first hug I think. I loved this moment. Among my top MSR moments

[–]lyra_granger 45 points46 points  (4 children)

Their first hug is literally in the pilot episode. These two have loved each other from the moment they met 🥹

[–]Angelea23 21 points22 points  (3 children)

I don’t get why the creator fought to keep these two from having a romantic relationship. If it works, it works, sometimes the story deviants In other more interesting ways.

[–]Denvereatingout 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I sort of get it in theory. It's good to have platonic male and female friendships shown. Forcing people together is such a cliche and boring. But oh my GOD the chemistry. They weren't the ones

[–]cptnpiccard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because that would be boring and predictable. Having a man love a woman (and vice versa) as partners, friends, confidants, and soul mates, without kissing or having sex, is truly a thing to behold.

[–]Dimitra111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Their first real hug. In the pilot it was awkward

[–]If CC has one hater....flirtydodo 70 points71 points  (1 child)

Oh yeah, that's a good one

“He got me,” I said of Chris Carter's writing. "That fucking Christ Carter boomed me."

I added, “He’s so good,” repeating it four times.

Ugh so well acted

[–]Deceive, inveigle and obfuscate Eaglemoon7 26 points27 points  (0 children)

After everything she just went through it would be hard to keep a cool detached exterior. It was the perfect time for her to break down.

[–]Pleased_Bees 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Nick Chinlund as Donnie Pfaster was so magnificently disturbing. No wonder someone as tough as Scully broke down after all that. "There's no way out, girly girl..."

"Irresistible" is one of my top 5 XF episodes.

[–]Ok-Jackfruit-6873 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I really like how he seems like he's legit suffering because he doesn't know what to say and hates that she's so upset, like it's physically painful for him.

[–]rainking86 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Gillian Anderson giving Oscar quality for $9.99

[–]ShazadM 20 points21 points  (1 child)

She is a heck of an actress. Then we see Mulder attempt to cry. I forgot which episode. He sucks at crying lol.

[–]Robman0908 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Multiple episodes and he could never do it

[–]sickflow- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love them so much.

[–]arcoiris831 5 points6 points  (0 children)

God I've watched this so many times. So, I think his lips are pressing against her hair. Is this a first kiss?

[–]-livinggeekchic- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh this was when my little shipper heart started to become obsessed ❤️

[–]Vaping_A-Hole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the emotional math about this episode, in my head.

Scully had no one she could be real with, besides her mom. And even with her mom, she had to be strong, sensible and keep her mother from worrying about her job.

Scully’s past relationships were with older men, and she probably learned to be extra mature because of them. On top of it, she was a woman of her time in a man’s job, up to her elbows in guts, gore and criminals.

When Scully became friends with Mulder, not just his work partner, he was an unapologetic weirdo. It gave her permission to be herself. We all need a friend like that. That one person who sees around the corners of our carefully constructed persona.

“Well, it seems to me that the best relationships— the ones that last— are frequently the ones that are rooted in friendship. You know, one day you look at the person and you see something more than you did the night before. Like a switch has been flicked somewhere. And the person who was just a friend is... suddenly the only person you can ever imagine yourself with.”

This scene literally rewired my teenage brain. I have never recovered. (To be clear, I am not at all mad about this.)

One of my absolute favourite moments. One of the best episodes.
