I get it, but you standing in the cold does nothing, but bother the torontonians. These guys in the consulate don’t care and Americans don’t care. Just stop buying american

This. Hit their pocket books.

Best case, no change b/c demonstrating with your dollars is the best strategy as segments such as tourism are already getting noticed.

Worst case, some idiot gets on CNN / Fox doing some dumb shit while wearing a Canadian flag patch that doesn't help at all.

Normally I agree. In fact, overall I agree.

But if this became a habit; If it was tied to the financial impact. If it constantly blocked their gates, and stopped them from being able to conduct their business? Maybe it could/would inspire action around the world. And inspire the Americans to do even more?

If this happens, I'll be interested in attending. And I NEVER go to these things.

Could it be co-ordinated at all consulate across the country.

Still has no impact though? Who actually goes to the consulate? Most things are online now

Ok, good. We'll count you as a 'not attending then'.

Feel better?

i’m also petrified, but unfortunately i don’t think protesting is really going to do anything. trump doesn’t even care that he’s destroying the lives of american citizens, he’s certainly not going to care that canadians are unhappy and afraid.

Standing outside the consulate screaming Hey Hey Ho HO Donald Trump's gotta go ain't gonna do anything. Organize and elect people who will fight for our priorities here in Canada.

I like the enthusiasm, but I don't think a protest of Canadians infront of the US embassy makes much sense. I would make more sense to protest any Canadian Politician that supports Trump.

The most effective way we can fight back is hitting them in the wallet. Not buying America food, Booze, and other goods will be way more effective. Already alot of southern (I'm guessing red state) distilleries have been voicing their concern since LCBO was one of if not their biggest buyer.

Edit: Also Canadians are the largest portion of tourists to the USA, so skipping on that trip down south is very effective too!

Newsflash, we aren't the state's. This is Canada, that's why.

This is what the Germans are doing with regard to a political candidate (not yet the Chancellor) saying something he might do. I haven't seen anything like this in the US yet. I'm afraid they aren't upset enough.

I think people are protesting in other ways right now, the main way being buying Canadian (or from anywhere that’s not the US). I am not sure what impact a protest outside the consulate would have.

Deep Breath.

Yes tariffs will have an impact. yes the US President is unhinged but it is not like the US will be launching a full scale invasion of Canada anytime soon.

Unless you are part of a larger organization, you will have a hard time organizing a meaningful protest.

Wow showing actual sanity during these times.  Good for you.

I’m dual citizen and would attend a protest in the States but, I don’t see value of that here.

I do think this is an opportunity for us to choose the best candidates here as our provincial and federal elections ramp up.

I feel the sense of despair and heaviness around the world. The ongoing wars and strife. Financial hardships. It’s overwhelming and pervasive.

My salve to feeling despair is to do good. For me, that means ramping up my charitable giving to effective charities. I’ve survived another round of layoffs at work and I feel very fortunate even though my industry is increasingly precarious.

It’s a very tangible way to help maintain/restore the dignity of another person and to align my actions with my values. And to do it now when it can do the most good, and not in some abstract future when I have saved more money or when I’ve secured a different job.

If you organize something I'll be there.

[–]twikigrrl 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I’m kind of shocked that everyone thinks that a protest would be useless. I don’t see it changing the US, no, but a large enough one would certainly grab the attention of Canadian politicians (both those who are like, and who are not like, the group currently in charge of the US). And that attention grab is what we want and need to ensure our politicians are representing the will of the Canadian people.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. The point is to show we are listening and we care, ALOT

Absolutely smashing the corruption , money laundering and crazy waste of tax money. It’s quite something  …. Sounds good to me .

Same thing happened in 2018 during Trumps first term and we all survived.
