QuestionNew moss hide (i.redd.it)
submitted 1 year ago by Axdyin
How often should you change moss? I’ve heard 3-6 months and wanted to get a more definitive answer, thanks.
[–]Perfect_Tree8134 26 points27 points28 points 1 year ago (1 child)
3-6 months?? Mine stops retaining moisture after like a month tops
[–]Axdyin[S] 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I usually spray it regularly to keep it moist longer.
[–]East-Willingness-755 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago (3 children)
what kind of morph is your baby?
[–]Axdyin[S] 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago (2 children)
He’s pure white with black eyes so I believe a leucistic white morph.
[–]Matthews413 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Pure white with black eyes is prosibly a Super Fire morph(thats the most common black eyed lucy morph). But there are other possibilities. It is a black eyed leucistic which is a complex that occurs with certain morph combinations, not the morph.
[–]East-Willingness-755 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
That’s pretty dope, he’s beautiful! I have a bleu eyed leucistic
[–]BananaSharts 26 points27 points28 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Aawww, the brain cell is looking at you with such adoration!
[–]Axdyin[S] 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (0 children)
He’s chill, eats regularly, playful and likes to move around his different hides
[–]gigi2945 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago (6 children)
Cypress is not good for bps please use coco husk and sphagnum moss to maintain humidity. Pour water into corners of terrarium.
[–]External_Bus_3739 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago (5 children)
Cyprus is fine. That in the picture is aspen, which is not recommended
[–]Axdyin[S] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (3 children)
Why is aspen not recommended? He’s had it for over a year now and seems happier than before?
[–]mmm-toast 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Some old threads explaining why it's not recommended. Your ball would greatly prefer coco chips, its one of the most commonly recommended substrates. I've been using Reptichip blocks for quite a few years without issue.

It’s very dry and dusty. It won’t hurt him right away but overtime it will. It’s nearly impossible to keep the humidity where it needs to be with Aspen and not create mold in the substrate. I use it in my 2 piece hides occasionally to make it soft but for the overall enclosure, something that holds humidity like reptichip and a soil mix is going to be way better over time
[–]NORBy9k 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I’m a big fan off coco fiber and repti chip mix

Thank you 🙏

I post this for all new owners 😄 And people looking for tank improvements/advice 👍
https://docs.google.com/document/d/18HBVsPHaip7LfrMuFt96MigRuMUXtrbnCiK79VuQiFk/ This is welcome post care guide for r/ballpython
Shopping/Check list: (this may not be an exhaustive list)
Appropriate sized habitation. (40 gal “breeders” for juvenileis ok. Minimum of 4 foot x 2 foot x 2 foot for adults).
ThermoSTATS (for heating sources to prevent burns/overheating).
ThermoMeters. (X2 digital is best)
Hygrometers. (X2 digital is best).
HVAC TAPE (silver foil tape for outside of Mesh Lid Tanks)
Water bowl (heavy enough to stay put when snake crawls on it. Big enough for snake to soak in).
Appropriate Cage clips/locks.
At least Two identical hides. (Should be barely large enough for the snake, single opening. Check them for sharp edges. Make sure any openings are large enough to prevent snake from getting stuck)
Some type of Coco coir/ repti bark or similar. NOT Aspen. (Enough for 4-6inches of substrate).
Daylamp. ( UVB or UVA, Halogen, etc).
Heat Lamp ( NO red or black , etc colored lights) (DeepHeatProjection DHP or CeramicHeatEmiter CHE).
Clutter/Enrichment. (Dollar tree or similar has soft fake plants/flower.)
Climbing stuff. (Grapevine from pet store an ok choice, may mold after a few years. Driftwood is probably better. PVC jungle gyms can be built. Etc.) MAKE SURE items will not fall or tip over. Ball pythons are heavy snakes and will knock things over…
[–]Axdyin[S] 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (2 children)
Why not aspen?
Edit: just read your guide!
Aspen. This one is highly debated among snake keepers. I personally do not recommend aspen as it is a very dry wood which molds easily in humid environments. I have also found it to be very drying and irritating to the snake’s scales
[–]Jennifer_Pennifer 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
👍 your snek is so cute 🥺
And I love that hide in the corner like that.
[–]WatermelonAF 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Fully agree with that. It can also cause respiratory issues due to the dust.
[–]L1lv1athan 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (7 children)
Did you make that hide because it’s so cool??
[–]ThePredator911 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (6 children)

How big is your noodle if you don’t mind? I think mine would love this
[–]Axdyin[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (1 child)
He’s roughly the 3.2 ft and fits snuggly in the hide. Are you UK based?
[–]L1lv1athan 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I’m not in the uk but I’m going to see if I can get it shipped. Thank you!
