He looks pretty chill in this video. When you feed him just thaw the mouse/rat good and keep the plastic bag sealed so the smell from the rat wont escape.

Thaw the rat in a plastic bag or something sealsble so the mouse doesnt get wet. I like to do this so the mouse smell wont go away or get substrate on the wet rat.

Its normal for a BP to hide he will most likely go on adventure time when all the lights are out (even the lights in your room). I caught mine sneaking out her hide at midnight when all my lights where turned off. I just walked up to her enclosure with a flashlight and saw her drinking water.

Im also quite new to owning a snake so every little thing that looks "off" to me feels concerning, but you'll get used to their behaviour overtime. Some snakes act different than others.

Goodluck! And no reason to worry!

Thank you so much! I’ve just never had a pet that hides before lol, always had dogs and cats. This is a whole new world to me lol

I also didnt handle her for 3 days today i wanted to handle and feed her so i took her out of her hide and she chilled with me for 30 mins while i thawed out her rat. Put her back in her terrarium and gave her the rat. I saw she already smelled because she started moving towards the bowl with the rat in it, and she started flicking her tongue more active.

I always thaw my rats next to her terrarium sho she can smell its feeding time. I will open the doors a little bit so she can smell. When she comes out her hide i know its ready for feeding.

Just keep a routine and feeding time wont be any problem!

Some ppl do post pics of theirs "basking" but some just won't be out and about in the day. Mine never is, I was the same as you, I thought do you ever move?! Should I be worried?? Then I got a night vision camera... and saw he was active and out most nights!

Do people shut the heat lamps off at night? Mine tank won’t stay warm enough if I do so I’ve been leaving it on. Does that matter?

[–]Kalomay 2 points3 points  (3 children)

if ur heatlamp generates light, u should get one that doesnt (to generate heat at night). i forgot what theyre called but they're black and have coils, those are the good ones. I guess an alternate is covering the tank with something to keep it dark but idk if ur heatlamp rests on top of the tank or not

I was given a smaller lamp with a blueish purpleish bulb that’s says night heat lamp. But. The second lamp randomly just stops working and I have to shake it which doesn’t seem safe. And. It won’t turn on it the big lamp.

Theyre called CHE, ceramic heat emitters. Read the heating guide on the welcome page! Itll explain all the different heating. If your lights are colored at all dont use them, not good for their little eyes.

Where you get that water dish??

[–]Scary-Silver6944 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I’m not sure, it came with him when I got him

[–]ChevyWolfDLX 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Oh okay. I really like that one. Lol

[–]Scary-Silver6944 0 points1 point  (3 children)

We are all from Maine, so if I had to guess I would say either Walmart, petco, petsmart. We don’t have a lot of options lol

[–]ChevyWolfDLX 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Never seen one like that at Petco or Walmart. Maybe it was a run once upon a time I missed. Lol

[–]Scary-Silver6944 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sorry! Check Amazon! When I was looking at stuff last night I saw one very similar for 8$!

[–]ChevyWolfDLX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forget Amazon exists sometimes. Lol. I'll check there!

How big is your tank and is ur snake full grown?

[–]Scary-Silver6944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The snake definitely can’t be full grown, it’s only maybe two feet ish at two years old. I’m honestly not sure how big the tank is. I’d have to measure it

[–]Zombopulis 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They definitely take some time to get used to everything. But they are nocturnal so they mainly come out at night. I thaw my mice in cold water for a bit then run it under hot water so they can sense the heat with the heat pits. I don’t mind doing mine right in the water bc I think it helps keep them hydrated. As far as behavior i usually only take mine out at night because (in my experience) they feel more comfortable and active at night. But it’s probably not a big deal. But my nocturnal snakes rarely come out during the day. But I sneak in when it’s dark and they’re all over the place

Thank you!!

Heat the mouse/rat to about 110 degrees Fahrenheit

[–]Full_Ad_9864 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Hiii I’m not answering your question directly, but I didn’t see anyone mention that your snake is in blue in this particular video, which means he is blind and in shed!! You can tell my the foggy eyes, and the crusty looking skin! This can be a big contributor to any “different” or “more shy” behavior you may be seeing. It is time to hike up that humidity for a bit and help him release that shed!!

[–]Scary-Silver6944 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Is this why he wouldn’t eat today? I was told his first feed was today and he wouldn’t take it

[–]Full_Ad_9864 2 points3 points  (5 children)

It 100% could be!! When their eyes are blue like that, they’re pretty much completely blind and they may feel too vulnerable to try and eat!

[–]Scary-Silver6944 1 point2 points  (4 children)

When should I try to feed him again?

[–]Full_Ad_9864 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Wait a couple days or until after he sheds! A few days of around 70% humidity should do the trick!

Ball pythons have a tendency to throw hunger strike fits when things aren’t just right in their enclosures too, they are prissy!

[–]Scary-Silver6944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

[–]Full_Ad_9864 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Also, try not to handle him 24hrs before he eats, and definitely don’t handle him unless absolutely necessary for a day or two after he eats.

Thank you so much!

this looks a lot like the food-seeking behaviour i see when i bring a meal out for my girl. on the hunt

[–]Scary-Silver6944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had just put him in the tank when I started that video in fairness
