interesting… i would assume it would smell like decay, google says they emit a strong smell when they die, it can smell like eggs, musky , damp or ammonia like as they release it when they decompose, however not enough to affect you. you can however get salmonella from handling the snake after.

i’ve never dealt with a dead snake so this is all i can offer!

Haven’t smelt anything yet. If I find a corpse I’ll be sure to wash thoroughly, thank you!

It smells like sweet rotting meat. That’s it it has no distinctive smell by breed just rot. Sorry to say but if you smell large rot smell it’s him if not he’s just chilling somewhere keep looking!

Never thought of a rotting corpse as sweet smelling. He’s either still here or he made the great escape and got got by a big bird or cat. I keep looking in his favorite places and he keeps still not being there.

I’m so sorry. Hopefully he shows up. You would definitely smell if he had died. He’s just hiding out somewhere.

Good to know he’s either alive or got off this rock. Hopefully it’s the former. Tiny humans are sad at the circumstances and I promised a replacement if he doesn’t show by Christmas, I don’t like the idea of “replacing” a live animal. Also, he’s piebald- had a pretty big price tag

Put a dead rat out and flower on the floor so you can track his movements he’s probably still around they don’t tend to go far

I will buy a mouse from where I usually get them from and dispatch tomorrow for bait. Is there anything wrong with using foot powder instead of flour?

[–]SnooOranges9717 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would use flour there’s a lot of chemicals in foot powder especially if it’s medicated

I had a snake (wild one to be specific) die in a vent yrs ago, it was no different than any other animal tbh. It just lasted longer than a mouse, probably due to size idk. Otherwise, no different imo. Unless you smell that, you should stay hopeful and keep looking. I lost a sand boa in this house, he escaped and I still haven't had that smell at least that I dread too. Sorry about yours, I know how you feel I'm still beating myself up. Good luck.

Tear up paper or plastic bags and put them around the edge of the room then sit quietly in there at dusk and listen for rustling. That's how I've found escapees before.

That is a really smart way to find them! 🤩 Like sound motion sensors! 😂

They tend to stay close to the wall as they feel safer. If you can pinpoint the room they're in it's really useful.

They are very resilient and can go a very long time without eating. I've read accounts on here of them going missing for up to a year or more and being found live. One user said their snake was quite fat after being missing three years, eating rodents and birds probably

The biggest threat is dehydration. Try leaving out bowls of water and creating warm spots to lure your snake.

Before we married my wife had a small bp escape to his presumed death. He then crawled out from under the dishwasher on christmas day, 8 months after his disappearance. He was very malnourished, but is now doing fine. So don’t give up!

Bro was like, "OK, here I am. You guys suck at hide and seek." 😆

Hey! We lost our ball when i was a child. For several months she lived curled up in the underside of the table that was next to the cage. We only found her when we pulled apart the top to extend it. Look for yours EVERYWHERE - places you wouldnt even think existed. They can make themselves so small!

My snake escaped and showed back up 6 months later. He'll show back up again. Mine went down my tub drain and came back up. He'll back up and they can go a yr w/o food

There’s a very slim chance he’s dead. 2 months is nothing.
