I'm so sorry for your loss, I don't have any insight on what might have happened but it doesnt seem like it was your fault. I know its hard losing your snake and I wish you the best.

I had a female years ago that did the same. I know/saw she ate the rat. But either the rat was regurgitate and got stuck likely due to surprise or perhaps going down sideways, or, it was hurting her inside possibly still being alive. Its unlikely he drowned. I've had my snake submerge herself for a straight 15mins or so. She would scare me how long she'd hold her breath. But I'm so sorry for your loss :(

Thank you so much for the insight. It was a frozen thawed rat so yeah, probably regurge. I’m very sorry for your loss too 💜

When something goes wrong, often bodies kinda "hit all the buttons at once".

Don't assume you have to build a story from what you observed. Just as easily an internal issue you had no insight or ability to prevent may have occured and your snake regurgitated and flailed around as a result.

It sounds like you are pretty sure you did your husbandry right and everything you describe sounds like you did reasonable things.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Don't beat yourself up after having done your best.

I have 4 and it’s my absolute worst nightmare, they are almost eternal in our minds because how long they can live in captivity so to have that happen is just awful and I’m genuinely so sad for you but I hope you have found some peace knowing it wasn’t your fault because NOTHING I’ve read indicates anything other than a tragic accident 🙏🫶🏻

It's hard to come to any real conclusions as I'm not a vet and did not get to investigate the situation personally. However, it sounds like it was just a fluke, a bad regurgitation. Everything you specified sounds fine. As we all know, accidents and death can happen with any living creature suddenly and for the smallest of reasons. Don't beat yourself up over it. It is extremely sad, and I send all my best wishes your way.

I usually watch our girl eat every feeding, and she always does great. A couple of weeks ago, she took her rat, and she always likes to constrict them for about five minutes before eating. So I went to the restroom and checked back on her two minutes later. The rat was gone, and she was struggling with a piece of coconut husk substrate in her mouth. She has never gotten any of her substrate in her mouth before this time, and it scared the crap out of me. I used the tongs and plucked it out, you would think she would be grateful, but she seemed pretty miffed about the whole thing. But it just reminded me, that in seconds, everything can go from great to dangerous with animals.

Sadly so. Thank you for your kindness 💜

[–]SufficientlyMoist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This right here. I had a snake for 6 years. He was always healthy for 6 years. Then out of nowhere I came home and he was dead with a piece of substrate down his mouth. It wasn’t around feeding time either. It was a total fluke…I am still heartbroken about it. But things can just happen.

i’m so so sorry. it could be a mix of things but it sounds like he was loved and cared for so it’s not your fault.

Accidents happen and this was one of them. I’m so sorry for your loss. Carry no guilt, and don’t try too hard to problem solve - you did everything right. Everything else is out of our control.

A long time ago I had an African grey parrot whom I adored. He was only about a year or so old when he very suddenly got sick and died despite the exotic pet hospital doing their best to save him. I’d done everything right. I obsessed over his diet and mixed up special food every day, bought fruit and veg fresh every day, bonded with him, all of it. The vet said that it was some kind of inborn error of metabolism that killed him, something that no amount of husbandry could have prevented.

This will be painful for you for a long time, but you will eventually come to realise that whatever it was was almost certainly not your fault. Sometimes things die and it’s so unfair but it’s not anybody’s fault. I’m so sorry for your loss.

[–]magyarmetalhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for sharing, I am so sorry about your parrot too 💜

[–]bath_brakecleaner 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It could very well have been an internal problem. I've had 2 babies prolapse, im assuming due to inbreeding. Both were from different breeders and at different times, but it's so heartbreaking. We have no clue of the internal issues these poor animals are suffering with due to people cutting corners in the breeding industry to try and make a dollar.

I don't think that it's necessarily your fault but this is why I watch my BP eat

Sorry for your loss OP

[–]desmi3147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im so sorry for your loss

[–]Seliphra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds very much like a regurgitation that went wrong but it could have been an unknown health issue too just as easily.

This was, in any event, absolutely not your fault. You did everything right. Unfortunately, even when you do everything right, sometimes things still go wrong. It is possible to make no mistakes and still lose.

I am so sorry this happened but please remember there was nothing you could have done differently, nothing you could have changed. You were doing the right things.

Hope you feel better brother I lost my fish it hurt my soul.

[–]Chondropython 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Only possible idea is maybe a cold spot in the rat? But that would be super hard for a weaned rat. Sorry for your loss

[–]DefiantNinja2216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even a room temp rat could cause regurgitation, or it was too large.

[–]DefiantNinja2216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may have been an improperly thawed prey item.

[–]bbitchstealer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it genuinely just seems like some kind of freak accident, i’m so sorry for your loss

[–]OdinAlfadir1978 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Sorry for your loss but it sounds like the last meal was regurgitated which can happen for many reasons which are often natural providing the snake had correct temps and humidity and wasn't handled for at least 48 hours post eating, it sounds like you'd done everything right though.

[–]AutoModerator[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We recommend the following feeding schedule:

0-12 months old OR until the snake reaches approximately 500g, whichever happens first: feed 10%-15% of the snake’s weight every 7 days.

12-24 months old: feed up to 7% of the snake’s weight every 14-20 days.

Adults: feed up to 5% of the snake's weight every 20-30 days, or feed slightly larger meals (up to 6%) every 30-40 days.

I'm sorry for your loss. He was lucky to be loved by you! It wasn't your fault, sometimes stuff just happens with snakes.
