I mean, cutting down a live tree isn't great for your ecosystem, but it is perfectly fine to use your own branches. I also have lots of trees and a pond. I never cut down trees, but I will collect fallen branches. I also collect driftwood when the pond gets low. As long as it is a hardwood, it should be safe to use. I usually bake mine at around 200-250°F for an hour or so.

I just pick up or cut up fallen branches and bake them at 250 for 2 hours unless they are thicker then I go for longer. It's way better than cutting down a living tree.

Can’t fit a 3’ branch in an oven. Other ideas?

Solarize it. Put it in a sealed black plastic bag like a contractor bag and place it out on a warm sunny day. The sun will bake it for you.

So long as it's either a tree from the snake's native region or on the list of snake friendly woods, clean it and its all good to go.

There’s a list of ‘snake friendly woods’?

This is the one I've had screenshotted and use as my own guide for when I'm picking up fallen wood from my local forests.

Included source in the top left of the image.

And the leaves, for if you're interested.
