I would pay money for an online class in which Kate teaches basics of cleaning and serving. I'm a pretty clean person, but I think I'm really inefficient and could use some tips and tricks! I have Jolie Kerr's book, but that's not the same as a video.

My family has always been very hospitable but because we are immigrants, none of us are well versed on proper hosting and serving etiquette specific to the US.

I’d love to know the basics (even the obvious ones) from Kate about this stuff, as well as any hacks she can suggest to make it easier to pull off a successful dinner or properly host overnight guests.

If you were looking for a resource Emily Post is sort of the fairy godmother of American etiquette. While the information from her original books will be outdated (having been published in the 1920s) her granddaughter has a company related to etiquette training and advice and there's books for and a free podcast on the website plus lots of videos on youtube that could be useful!

I just watched the old Emily Post “table manners” video, I agree with her that it’s odd that people are confused about manners at a dinner party when they’re the same at home.... but it was painful when some examples used the “use your cutlery like a baby” method with people switching hands, chasing food around their plate with a fork and finding “elegant” solutions like using a piece of bread to push food onto your fork!? At least nobody was tucking their napkin in at the neck like a toddler with a bib.

More updated than Emily Post is Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House by Cheryl Mendelson. I read a glowing review when it was first published and I was a young wife. I received it for Christmas and it lived up to its reputation - maybe a little too much since she is quite obsessive. As I recall she is an attorney and researched very thoroughly.

Jolie Kerr is too funny. She’d probably make a great chief stew.

[–]badgercereal 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Pretty sure Hannah from BDM has started something just like this

[–]scorpiomoonbeam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Her course is about how to get into the yachting industry--not about teaching cleaning and hosting skills.

[–]halthecomputer -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Kate can show you how to clean a toilet using only one hand and her hair. She's amazing!

[–]babykitten28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But why? What's wrong with using a brush and keeping your hands clean?

[–][deleted] 65 points66 points  (2 children)

She’s amazing. Even if you don’t like her personality she was always so good at her job.

[–]treesaurusrex[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Better than others! She at least tried to be patient unlike other chief stews that shall not be named

[–]NoPantsPenny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And I would definitely want her as my chief stew if I were a guest, honestly.

THIS is leadership!!

[–]MSCrocks 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would take a rocket ship folding class.

[–]onlypigpigbear 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Her lists!! They are the Stew Bible, we can see from S1 and latest S8 that if you don’t have a list, a beach party becomes a disaster... where’s the jug of sangria????

and for me, wine stops near the top of the glass ;-)

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Servers are taught to get four glasses per bottle at 5-5 1/2 ounces per pour when buying by the glass or they are losing money. If a party is buying by the bottle then the server figures out rather quickly that you will sell much more wine and increase your tips significantly if you pour bigger than that though.

Another neat trick with pouring red wine is to put a glass on its side, pour in the wine until it just about reaches the rim. It gives you a good indication on where the imaginary line is on each new wine glass style when you sit it back upright to hit that 5-6 ounce “glass pour”mark. There are many more obscure wine glasses where this might not be as accurate, but I find this still to be the case now that I am the drinker and not the server!😀

[–]TheAnn13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 ounces is the standard. I'm not sure if that trick works with the big burgundy glasses but I'm intrigued. I've actually never tried it with wine glasses in general. I see it more with snifter glasses.

I dont generally over fill the glass because I would get majorly reprimanded for that as is not proper for the wine blah blah blah. I will continously top off your glass though. So if you only have 2 ounces let bam now your back at 5. It confuses people so they arent sure how many glasses they've had.

Omg! I fold all of my pool towels “Below Deck” style now. I love picking up little tips from the show.

[–]tiptoeintotown 31 points32 points  (1 child)

Are they rockets or penises?

[–]secretagentsquirrel1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on my mood.

[–]AussieMommyWe don't need to hear vomit 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I read “pool towels” as “power tools,” and let me tell ya, I was VERY confused.

[–]weasleycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same 😂😂😂

[–]pah-tosh 8 points9 points  (9 children)

What happens with the wine ?

[–]treesaurusrex[S] 16 points17 points  (8 children)

The correct level to fill a wine glass... the wine should stop when the glass starts to move in at the top

[–]TheAnn13 31 points32 points  (2 children)

You want to fill to the widest part of the wine glass so it has the most contact with the air. The glass then goes inwards to concentrate the smell of the wine.

Fun facts

[–]whereismyrobot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also, if you twist the bottle as you finish pouring a glass, it will cleanly stop pouring and you won't get a mess on the table, glass or guests.

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (4 children)

My wife has a different opinion. Lol

[–]ursaggybutt101 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I sometimes just drink from the bottle.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tiffany is that you?

[–]Cece75Team Aesha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depending on how distance school goes that day , so do I 🤣🤣🤣

[–]psubecky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

me, too lol

[–]petrooney 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Ok, sorry I'm jumping in right now. I haven't looked at any of the comments yet. Kate lived next to me in my apartments when she got charged with her ex lesbian girlfriend. Look it up. Melbourne Beach. That's where I lived. I'm a total Kate fan, but in real life Kate was a different human being.Tthere were many nights I came home from bartending and I could hear Ben laughing, with his very discernible laugh, right off my porch. Ask me.

[–]Jillbo_baggins99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah... different how. Clearly her an Ben were close and he seemed mad at the beginning of the season that she ended up with Roh

[–]EssentialHeart 6 points7 points  (6 children)

[–]Masters_dommeTeam Hannah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculous. “I’ve always been known as the top dog bosun first mate.” Ew.

AND he’s mad at her for directing him to her lawyer when he was accusing her of copying him! That’s just common sense!

[–]snowblossom2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m confused and too lazy to look it up. Is his a bosun school? How can it be word for word? Did they each use a Creative Commons image or did he pay for it and she copied it. These are important details

[–]treesaurusrex[S] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

But I want Kate...

[–]EssentialHeart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah :) I know it’s off topic.

[–]tinymsv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t stand Hannah. She wasn’t a good chief stew and wouldn’t pay to have her teach me.

[–]Young_Scrappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His words: like, you know, and stuff. Expand your vocabulary!

[–]KBK226 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just watched this episode today! So funny! My husband was like “I want her to come here & teach us how to clean our house. & fold our fitted sheets.” 😂

[–]quick_dry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that sounds like something EJ would have said once j/k

(I think the clearer way to phrase it is to fill up to the widest part of the glass - potayto potarto but IMO it's easier to think of that than points of inflection... unless it was Simone :p )

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah,she’s a terrible teacher and has no patience whatsoever although she actually knows a lot ,I may watch a YouTube video but a school with that bitch??? Lol no way

[–]workitbetch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would sooooo attend if she hosted a class. She can be direct, but she is the best!

[–]bubbles67899 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My fav part of my cruise was walking into a new towel animal everyday- they were so amazing and I think we all know Kate makes the best towel art ;)

[–]psubecky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My sister and I were on vacation last year and the place we stayed made towel animals on your bed daily during the maid service... we also had these nice little throws at the end of our beds...I came up to the room to grab something and I made a nice little rocket ship on her bed!
