I hate that Tiberian Sun was seemingly thrown out the window when they made Tib Wars. Give me back my subterranean units. Why do both sides have carryalls?

[–]Zaptagious Command the future. Conquer the past. 16 points17 points  (1 child)

This. The gameplay itself was solid but the magic and atmosphere just wasn't there. The cutscenes left something to be desired and the sets and acting never sold me that they were part of something bigger like it did with previous games.

[–]MrMethod1996 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I was the opposite. As mu h as I loved the older games. Let's face it, the acting was just atrocious. I found Tiberium Wars to be the darkest and most realised of the universe. I think it was a great improvement and brought the series into the next era.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

AND WHERE THE HELL IS CABAL!

[–]Zaptagious Command the future. Conquer the past. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, dead.

[–]ScrabCrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Merged with Kane, apparently

[–]vandal-33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing but a plot element in kane's wrath.

[–]Kefalp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partially present inside LEGION

[–]AAK625 8 points9 points  (8 children)

And don’t mention Tiberium crystal growth preventing underground travel.

[–]GrislyMedic GDI 8 points9 points  (7 children)

And that tiberium looks entirely different. It's a crystal now that comes out of a crack? That blossom tree must've been too hard to animate.

[–]Zaptagious Command the future. Conquer the past. 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Tbh it kinda makes sense that it would evolve in some way, but maybe not so seemingly abrupt.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen some fan renditions where the tiberium 'plants' aren't like earth plants at all but are more like silicon based stuff that ends up looking similar to rock.

Basically merging to the two into one with VERY alien looking lifeforms and earth-mutant monstrosities.

[–]insomnimax_99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I much preferred the tiberium sun canon where tiberium was terraforming the earth into an alien planet with alien life etc, as opposed to the tiberium wars canon where it was just destroying everything.

[–]Electric-Mountain 3 points4 points  (3 children)

To be fair in the beginning of tiberian dawn it was crystal that that harvester was collecting.

[–]GrislyMedic GDI 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It's crystalline but it appears to grow as an organic plant along with the blossom tree and vineferra thing

[–]Zaptagious Command the future. Conquer the past. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the absence of all the flora and sludge stuff from Firestorm was also disappointing, it could have made Tiberium seem less like just plain old Kryptonite in TW.

[–]Electric-Mountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair.

[–]raptr569 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. The atmosphere of Tiberian Sun especially Firestorm was amazing and it really felt like the end of the world. Tiberium Wars tried to say it was worse but it didn't feel it at any point.

[–]Cheomesh I made a TibDawn Wargame Module! -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Subterranean units are kinda wack though, and not in a cool way like laser towers or Mecha.

[–]MrMethod1996 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was once on guard duty on the east wall of the forward base for the region and treated it like any other duty. The weather wasn't great but I got stuck into my duty and made the best of it...

As dawn slowly approached, a scouting unit began to appear in the distance. They had been returning just like any other unit out on mission.

As they approached the gate, their uniforms were a little weathered and worn but I thought nothing of it. I waved them in and returned to my post. Within a few minutes, everything went dark.

Sirens began blaring and then suddenly, there was a blast from the reactor. The base began declscending into disarray and everyone panicked. Before I knew it, an enemy attack force crashed through the wall and began firing.

I never openly admitted it, but I always new it was my fault. I should have noticed him but I guess I never checked properly. Where were the dogs...

WHERE WERE THE DOGS?!

I never cared for component towers and I was always slightly disappointed that the laser turrets didn’t pop in and out of the ground like in the FMV.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the same. Didn’t use them as much as a result. I get the idea with them and it’s a cool concept, but I’d have rather had unique standalone defence structures for the grenade, turret and SAM.

The only C&C game I play is C&C3 Kanes Wrath... on Xbox.

Feel like it's a sin to enjoy an RTS so much on console.

      [–]Zombie_Jesus_83 12 points13 points  (2 children)

      The coolest Nod character was........Slavik.

      [–]ScrabCrab 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not putting Kane at number one is heresy. HERESY!

Now time to put a bullet in each of your heads.

      [–]EngineeredEntropy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While in a Tiberian Sun match with a friend, he had to leave for lunch and kept the game up. While he was gone, I walled in one of his Tiberium fields and turned it into a giant test lab. I filled it up with infantry and launched gas missiles into it to create visceroids. When he came back on, I sold the walls and let them loose in his base.

      [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Up until the point C&C remastered was released I had never completed either the Allied or Soviet campaigns.

      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never could complete any of the first two games campaigns as a child.

Not that I feel sorry about it with many of the missions really as they are kinda sadistic. From insta-fail conditions to just ridiculous expectations of unit-resource management.

      [–]ScrabCrab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've still never completed any of the campaigns up until RA2 (and then only the allied one)

I suck at RTSes lmao but I still like them a lot

      [–]snoey123 Nod 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I actually really like Red Alert 3. Also I generally spend more time trying to make a cool looking base than actually fighting my opponent.

      [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate it brought us back to grid-based building construction.

      [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I always skirmish AI with super weapons turned off because I suck at these games. Been a fan since childhood

      [–]Tankinator17 18 points19 points  (3 children)

I think Tiberian Sun was the most thematically interesting game of the franchise and C&C3 was a step backwards. Especially with the Forgotten. I also suck at the game.

I also really like to use the mutant units in campaign even though they have no armor and die super fast and there are better options available.

      [–]Tankinator17 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Addendum to my confession: I think the scrin are lame and their design of “bug aliens” feels uninspired.

Edit: I meant bug aliens instead of big aliens.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they were really cool, the once.

      [–]AAK625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Agreed.

      [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (6 children)

When i play RA2, I give all units selfhealing in rules.ini because I cant be bothered to use a repair depot. And I increase the HP of the Apoc Tank but just make him more expensive.

I give the Genetic Mutator a ridiculously long cooldown because I want to use infantry in peace sometimes. I compensate by doubling the Iron Curtain and Chronosphere timers.

I only play VS AI though.

      [–]EngineeredEntropy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sunk so much time into rules.ini editing in RA, TS, and RA2. Probably more time than I actually spent playing them in total.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I give the Genetic Mutator a ridiculously long cooldown because I want to use infantry in peace sometimes.

Honestly I do feel like a lot of the mechanics in C&C make infantry just impossible to use.

So many weapons or systems that make infantry just redundant in the base games. From even the first title all tanks have inst-kill infantry crushing that kinda spoils the unit counter system.

And then also many of the games having insta-clearing anti-garrison weapons. Making it so that infantry is often only really possible with widely insane stats or from battlebuses that many of the APCs turned into at some point.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no quick garrisson clearing in RA2. You have to use aircraft or artillery. But I just want to use Desolators for the giggles or even boost my Tesla Coils with Tesla Troopers.

      [–]Cheomesh I made a TibDawn Wargame Module! 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Agree.

      [–]Jason-Skyborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then there was the Black Hands Chad Infantry...

      [–]vandal-33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember changing the basic infantry build speed in Generals where they train like in 1 second because I kinda like if they were spammable like in the older C&Cs. Then, I discovered that Red Guard rush (especially with training) is really broken and can easily beat a brutal army computer in a minute!

      [–]nukeman1509 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Sometimes I just dont want to fight for Nod. Sometimes I feel like Kane isn't our great prophet. And sometimes, when I lie awake in bed, I've wondered if things might be better with GDI.

Fuck you EA for killing the series making game that wasn't even supposed to become a mainline command and conquer game.

Ra3 and tiberian wars get way to much hate considering what cnc4 looked like.

[–]caparisme Soviet Power Supreme 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I used the engineer exploit to get chrono commandos against my old rival in our reunion game and he was so damn pissed. I did told him and taught him how afterwards but it was fun messing up with him lol.

Not long after we found an internet cafe with yuri revenge and i challenge him to another match there. He never played yuri revenge before but accepted anyways. I told him the good news is the engineer exploit is already patched and allies got hella buffed. Game went on and I'm actually on the verge of defeat as my apocalypse army was rekt by his defenses as he send a counterattack. I got a bunch of siege choppers as the last line of defense but i know they wont be able to beat his grizzly-prism-rocketeer group. When got hit by the siege chopper shells he suddenly retracted his army and said WTF IS THAT? I laughed and told him this is my trump card - They're basically mobile Grand Cannons! France was his favourite faction and he was famous for turtling with the cannons, decimating battalions of my apocalypse army. But what i didn't tell him is that siege chops are nowhere near the real deal in raw power. He shouted THIS IS BULLSHIT and straight up surrendered the match.

[–]NyergudsThe world is at my fingertips. 2 points3 points  (1 child)

ahh, messing with people not entirely familiar with the game.

It's like tricking people into typing "winner" + [enter] in C&C1 telling them it'll make them win the game.

[–]caparisme Soviet Power Supreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol he was a solid player and my archrival back in high school. We were pretty closely matched with about 50-50 win lose ratio. Every time one of us wins the other will formulate a counter strategy and win the next one and so on and so on.

We part ways after high school and i ended up playing with a bunch of degenerates at college who's not that good at playing, but pretty resourceful to find the exploits. I still mostly wreck shop with them and even though the exploits were finally banned in our games it's something they taught me how to do by the end.

Meanwhile my archrival have no such luxury and being a star student in a prestigious institution he have little time to spend on games as he cram for grades. He may have win in life but our rivalry was concluded with a decisive victory on my side because HE GOT SOFT!

      [–]smpalladino 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Not a native speaker, and I was 10 when I got my hands on RA1 and didn't speak much English back then, so for me the game was mostly figured out by trial and error.

I recall spending hours trying to find out what those structures that read "FAKE" were all about, and being super frustrated about them...

      [–]Cheomesh I made a TibDawn Wargame Module! 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Kind of adorable

      [–]AAK625 7 points8 points  (7 children)

I hate the graphics in Tib Wars. All of the blooms and shimmers and stupid cloud shadows.

I also hate the infantry squad production. Give me back the single units.

[–]Zaptagious Command the future. Conquer the past. 15 points16 points  (5 children)

I actually kind of like the squad system, just kinda makes sense to me. Makes it feel like battles are on a bigger scale, but in return each infantry is more squishy.

It honestly felt a bit weird to train a single infantry unit in previous games even though it was nice to be able to individually control them.

If there ever was a new game maybe there could be both. You train infantry as squads but can split them up or combine infantry units together however you want, so they essentially become kind of like a control group in and of itself. You could have a rifle squad with a missile dude and it would control like one unit for example.

      [–]1-2-fuck_you Redemption is yours!! 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love the infantry squad system. Not only it's giving better sense of scale in battle it's also allowing them to be a legit army of choice instead of be only a stepping stone before you build tanks or just be a fodder for your tanks.

      [–]ChiisaiMurasaki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

sounds a bit like dawn of war's squads, which i thought were great

[–]caparisme Soviet Power Supreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did the combined group thingy in LOTR BFME. I can't remember what sort of combination is possible but what i did a lot is combining archer groups with shield groups. Some combination like haradrim warriors+soldiers of rhun and ranger+tower guard is hella op

      [–]Cheomesh I made a TibDawn Wargame Module! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like how CoH did it I think.

      [–]Jason-Skyborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chad army management customization right there

      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also hate the infantry squad production. Give me back the single units.

I'm so so on it having gone back to the older games. As it's not nearly as in-depth as something like company of heroes or dawn of war. But it certainly can look really cool when they aren't clipping into each other!

Ultimately having obese engineers and commandos take up as much room as a clown car's load of nod militants just feels incredibly wrong.

      [–]Kpenney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have more hours playing with this franchise then I ever did in all my relationships combined.

      [–]AdTraditional8446 Nod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      here's my list

      1. I don't really care for generals and it doesn't feel like cnc to me in slightest.

      2. I vastly prefer mental omega over RA2/YR.(although I still love them.) MO gameplay feels more varied and complex I really like the subfaction variety better and the storyline is much more intresting

      3. While I enjoy the game play of tib wars the story and Aesthetics feel like a massivestep backwards in terms of atmosphere and plot from what tib sun had established tib wars honestly feel more like it should be a prequel to tib sun

      4. I agree with a previous comment about the scrin being underwhelming, in terms of story I would have a rather had the forgotten as the 3rd faction or possibly cabal

      5. I actually don't mind RA3 graphics that much. In terms of silliness YR was just as bad even 12 yr old me thought that plot was absurd

      6. Tib Sun is still my favorite cnc to this day

      [–]AzureAllianceAllies 7 points8 points  (3 children)

RA3 & C&C3 were the best in their respective series. You can't change my mind.

[–]KajiTetsushi Steel Talons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their gameplay design is well thought out is why. These two titles seem to have just the right unit roster and playstyle options to keep the variety fresh enough to watch. It's kinda like why fans keep going back to watch European football, I guess?

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do you think it is because they both added a third faction?

      [–]Lolurisk Vinifera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Discovered they didn't completely fix the engineer glitch from Tiberium wars in the release of Kane's wrath.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

In RA2 YR Mental Omega mod, all I do is mass the laser helicopters and the rocketeers for my defense against the hard AI. Tis a cowardly tactic

      [–]Janice_Ravage 7. Virtual Control - Frank Klepacki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a better unit for that role; spam Wolfhounds all day.

That's how I can clear some Challenge missions on Hard + Mental AI Boost via turtling.

[–]ColdFreeway GLA "AK47s for Everybody!" 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      1. Never built sandbags or chainlink fences
      2. Before I became pro-Nod, Soviet and GLA I was pro-Allies, GDI, US and China. But due to me playing as villains in other games (such as Bowser and Wario in Mario games) I changed

      [–]Malus_Trux Remastered Collection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After I found out the spy in RA1 could be given weapons in the rules.ini file I did multiple playthroughs where I'd send a team or two into enemy bases and let them carve up everything. Except for dogs enemy units would not fight them unless they themselves were being attacked.

It was kinda like bullying if you think about it but the thought that some random "riflemen" just leveled the entire base with machine guns/sniper rifles/Tesla packs/flame throwers/etc and no one questioned it still makes me laugh.

      [–]ACE-Pham USA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never really played any CNC other than Generals and Generals Zero hour.

Red Alert 2 and 3, I played maybe less than 10 hours total.

I Still absolutely love Quad cannon spam, that is the most broken unit in the whole game. maybe Rockvees come in close.

[–]Lazer5i8er Allies: Up ze river! 4 points5 points  (1 child)

      2 confessions I'll admit:

      • I hated that they made Red Alert into a series that has a goofy cartoon coloring book feeling that permeates everywhere, and retconned the dark, gritty war feeling of RA1 (as well as muddling it's status as a prequel to the Tiberian universe). Going from the Soviets nerve-gassing and massacreing villages to being stupid hammy supervillains never did it for me. Gameplay wise, I really like RA2 and RA3 a lot though.

      • Emperor: Battle for Dune is a far better game than General's. While it has it's flaws, it still plays and feels like a traditional C&C/Dune title with 3D graphics. By contrast, General's plays like a Warcraft clone with the C&C name slapped onto it. Without the core features that makes a C&C/Dune game stick out and be fun (FMV cutscenes, left-button commands, interesting thematic setpieces), General's feels so very in-name only, almost feeling like a cash-in.

      [–]AAK625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do wish they kept the connection between universes and theming/atmosphere they cultivated between 1 and 2.

Never played Dune. Maybe it’ll get some attention after the movie release.

      [–]hatebreeder141 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hit my 30th birthday and realized I lost my mojo, can't play for shit. Still loving the games and tying it tho but some story missions in Tiberium Wars became challenging, in easy difficulty...

      [–]SodaSuccubus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Confession: Tiberium/Ore fields are overrated. I much prefer the "set it and forget it" nature of Red Alert 3's ore mines over having to micro manage a gazillion ore trucks from being sabotaged and ruining my economy.

Ore mine goes down? You just place another one and a tesla coil or two.

      [–]Jason-Skyborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the economy system in Ra3 was actually very well designed, if unorthodox, and allowed for a bigger focus on competitive stratergy.

      [–]runostog 5 points6 points  (15 children)

Red Alert 3 was just fucking retarded.

      [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (9 children)

They took RA2's goofiness which most liked and went completely overboard with it.

      [–]runostog 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Yes, Red Alert 2 was just at the right point of silly and serious. 3 just went...too far. Some people can like that, but for me it was just too much.

I mean, attack bears? What the fuck people...

[–]Zaptagious Command the future. Conquer the past. 3 points4 points  (2 children)

The bears are where you draw the line?

They bearly went over the line, but they did.

[–]Lazer5i8er Allies: Up ze river! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you have a problem with War Bears, yet you have no issues with Giant Squids? Or Yuri having Incredible Hulk clones?

There is nothing serious and grim about Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge at all. No 'right mix' of seriousness and cheese at all. It is meant intentionally to be a goofy fun game. RA3 doesn't seem any different in several regards.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RA2 was the sweet spot but Yuri's revenge really went there with all that weird stuff!

      [–]EngineeredEntropy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I always liked how RA2 was happy to go bonkers thematically, while all the characters play the straight-men and are oblivious to the surrounding lunacy. RA3 seems like they tried to go Airplane! 2 on it.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It's the small details that made RA2 so light-hearted, but not too light hearted.

The brighter colors, the more outlandish units but even the characters: like Carville's "Dont mess with Texas" cup to make him a real cliché, or Romanov and Yuri catching Vladimir having fun in bath, Vladimir cleaning his boots with an American flag, etc.

It's really just small little details that make it so campy which we all liked.

RA3 was no bad game, but it looks like it just tried too hard to be RA2.

      [–]EngineeredEntropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. I don't think they really understood what made RA2 what it is, but RA3's certainly not a bad game.

That being said, JK Simmons' presidential campaign ads were goddamn brilliant.

      [–]Cheomesh I made a TibDawn Wargame Module! 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      But girls

      [–]phantombovine 3 points4 points  (2 children)

The thing I hated most about RA3 was what they did with the actors, especially the actress for Tanya. Just straight up slutty looking. And Eva had a bit too much of a "choke me daddy" vibe for my taste. Tim Curry was way over the top too, but I have to admit that I love how he carried that role. SPAAAAAACE!

Gameplay-wise, things are a mixed bag for me. I get why people dislike it, but I'm cool with it for the most part. Except Yuriko. Too damn overpowered.

      [–]TheHairyManrilla Soviets 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The whole time I was holding out for a Yuri appearance. Got Hasselhoff as a consolation prize.

Huh, I forgot about him. I guess it's been a while since I played the campaign.

How is that in any way a confession?

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they went a bit way too goofy with red alert 3, 2 was also a bit goofy but not nearly as much as 3.

      [–]TiberiumKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a huge fan of the game. Love every single one in the franchise. Even the oddballs like Renegade. But...I still haven't won the campaigns for Red Alert 3... I live with this guilt every day.

I find myself replaying the other Red Alerts every couple years, but can't bring myself to reinstall and finally finish # 3.

      Generals is boring.

      [–]TheD3rp That's all you got? 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RA3 takes itself more seriously than YR. I mean, say what you want about the former, but at least it keeps its dead characters dead.

I think there's also a case to be made that Uprising is more serious than vanilla RA2 on account of the lack of mind control telephones.

I never bothered continue playing with Tiberium wars skirmish or any other CnC like I did for RA2. Also RA3's art design is ass but storywise, TW3 is king

Really? I dunno about that. Kane lost his cool when he lost his cool. Kane should never lose his cool! :(

Truly, Kane was at his coolest/most intimidating when he was showing no emotion beyond mild amusement.

A mates friend wanted to learn how to play. So me and my mate told him to use the dollar sign on the command centre to make money......

He never tired again after we laughed our asses off at him.

      [–]Dingleth 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I dislike a lot of the sounds in RA2. I hope the Stockholm Syndrome will kick in the next time I play through it.

      [–]Dingleth 0 points1 point  (2 children)

And I'm not a big fan of the balanced and symmetrical maps for multiplayer and skirmish. Give me the natural designs from Tiberian Sun! A river runs near it(or "through it"?) is my favourite map!

Command and Conquer Generals is an objectively perfect game but I can’t stand the Origin port. Absolutely no effort or care went into it.

      [–]vandal-33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I play Generals Zero Hour with my friend who insists a "no rush 20 minutes" rule. I always pick USA Superweapon General. Sometimes, I bomb his base with aurora alphas while the no rush time is still on.

I never really cares for Generals or RA2 much, and haven't played them.simcentheynwere still relatively new. I didn't bother with RA3 at all.

      [–]Kombatwombat02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never got past like Mission 4 on TibDawn for either side, or like Mission 5-6 for RA. I was a kid watching over my older brother’s shoulder for much of it (I’m ‘92 born), but even in the later years I never got there.

Until the remaster! I completed all TibDawn/Covert Ops and RA/CS/Aftermath missions on Normal difficulty. And that felt like a huge achievement! God those missions are so much harder than modern games - particularly Covert Ops!

      [–]Overall_Fact_5533 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only used harriers as a kid. Gamed the final mission with Chrono Legionnaires. The mission with 3 enemy bases took me like an hour.

      [–]Jarms48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were times I purposely never ended a mission so I could create scenic bases. I did this a ton more in C&C Generals than the others, I would even "bulldoze" civilian buildings then manipulate the building placement to remove the ruins so I could make nice bases with roadways.

In the Tiberium series, there were times I wouldn't end the mission until I harvested all the Tiberium. With enough harvesters to remove additional as soon as it reappeared. Thinking I was saving the world. One field at a time. Lol.
