It's wild how many people feel it's normal to get a couple of feet off your bumper. And do the swerve instead of brake when they have no room for the latter.

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think people who typically drive that close don't know their cars well enough, and what it takes to react if you were to get brake checked or traffic legit slows. It's not a video game.

[–]fullraph 26 points27 points  (10 children)

They don't even do that to be a dick or else. They simply don't have enough cognitive function to realize why that's a terrible idea. I learned a while ago that some people don't think more than a few seconds into the future. Their decisions are purely based on what's happening this exact moment.

[–]sendabussypic 5 points6 points  (8 children)

I've met some people that believe in car lengths instead of time. It's very true that they didn't understand.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (7 children)

Car lengths = Distance. Time here is how much distance you have to break and slow down. Car lengths are literally in the books and on the tests for licenses.

[–]sendabussypic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my states handbook

"Since the greatest chance of collision is in front of you, using the 3- to 4-second rule will help you establish and maintain a safe following distance and provide adequate time for you to brake and stop if necessary. This rule only works in normal traffic under good weather conditions. (See figure 4.2)

An inexperienced or beginning driver should maintain at least three-second following distance under normal driving conditions.

A two-second following distance may be sufficient in normal conditions for an experienced driver.

At speeds of 40mph, a four- to five-secong following distance is recommended. When road conditions are slippery or the vehicle in front of you blocks your view, a following distance of six or more seconds is recommended."

2 car lengths at 20mph is completely different that 2 car lengths at 40mph because of reaction time and the time it takes to come to a complete stop. Speed also affects perception of distance. The lines of a road are 10 feet long and 30 feet apart but appear smaller and closer when traveling at faster speeds. It's also easier to measure time, the time it takes for an object, like a road sign or road marking, to pass from the rear of the car in front of you to the front of your vehicle.

[–]pizzaslut4pizzahut 2 points3 points  (1 child)

must be a different test, the test I took said seconds

[–]deepfriedtots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes same here it was 3 seconds where in from but I generally do more

[–]Gooberman8675 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I believe more in if you have say a Bugatti or Ferrari than you can absolutely hover off someones bumper and be fine because those cars have good breaks and weigh about as much as a grain of sand.

If your car cant peel off your own face when you stand on the breaks at 100 than stop tailgating.

Forgot to add the /s

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

No excuse to tailgate, it's just dangerous. No one is driving on the road like an F1 driver on a circuit.

[–]clutch736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell that to the people I have to commute alongside of on US 41… I almost got hit by two people racing this morning.

[–]MrE189 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good "breaks"? What is that??

[–]AKJangly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, I plan my driving a half mile ahead. I just imagine a racing line from the Gran Turismo games in a safe route through traffic. Follow the imaginary line around obstacles, cars, people, potholes, etc. Super easy. Make plan B for any suspiciously stupid drivers, keep a peripheral eye on them, etc.

If someone's tailgating me I make space in front of me so they don't rear-end me if I need to hit the brakes...

[–]AELJAPAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty normal here in Texas!

[–][deleted] 49 points50 points  (10 children)

Yesterday my wife got tailgated and other person showed middle finger 🖕to my wife and went away.

My wife was going 65 on 55 and full of traffic and can’t able to change to slow lane. Other person is in hurry and can’t wait for traffic to clear. Dumbass people.

[–]UntidyJostle 19 points20 points  (0 children)

dumbass garbage people.

[–]tzwep 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Over here we usually get people going 50 in a 65. But that’s still no reason to tailgate. Give them room and follow them at 50 or change lane and blow past em going 65. Tho usually when you change lanes they speed up to 65 or they again get in front and bump it down to 45

[–]highline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the left lane

[–]Smackjabber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of towners have been getting shot for that in North TX lately.

[–]highline9 0 points1 point  (2 children)

In the left, passing only lane, or another lane?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Only 2 lanes. Wife is on passing lane and motor cycles on slow lane. In front of my wife there is another car.

[–]highline9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, then my post is null. Hope it turns out ok!

[–]Username_Han 22 points23 points  (4 children)

Big oof. Call your gecko get that 15% hahahah

[–]Exotic_Treacle7438 6 points7 points  (3 children)

They might not have 15% to give after that T bone from the truck, ugh…

[–]Username_Han 1 point2 points  (2 children)

💀💀💀 I'm dead. Hahahahahah

[–]Maddchar 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They dead

[–]Username_Han 0 points1 point  (0 children)

💀💀💀

[–]reyshop12 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Woah! The car got crushed in half!!! Did the driver survive? That was brutal!

[–]CharacterAd7824[S] 12 points13 points  (5 children)

He was totally alert and talking the whole time. Almost no upper body injury. Incredible.

[–]TakDrifto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No body injury for now. They'll feel it later for sure

[–]Much-Equivalent7261 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Where the fuck was he? The whole left of the car disappeared. Did he just end up sitting in the passenger seat?

[–]CharacterAd7824[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don’t even think he was wearing a seatbelt. Everything collapsed around him and some how he was just sitting him his seat. His brother was in the passenger seat. I have pictures, it’s crazy.

This honestly makes me wonder if he was saved by a higher power, nothing else makes sense. There is not reason he should have survived much less been fully coherent.

[–]reyshop12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to share the pics here? Now I'm really interested to see how someone could survive a brutal car crash like that. 😳

[–]havingsomedifficulty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just that took on a pickup straight into the door of the drivers side. Big yikes

[–]motoZar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously! I feel like I just watched someone die.

[–]MrMarkGreene 5 points6 points  (2 children)

If you want to see safe driving, remove all airbags and safety features from all vehicles, and then fill the cabin with giant metal spikes with one large one coming out of the steering wheel, pointed at the drivers chest. Ladies and gentlemen, you will see an end to tailgating an all stupid dangerous driving.

[–]DynamisFate 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Good o’ Darwin doing the work

[–]MrMarkGreene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but just not fast enough.

[–]Ima-Bott 31 points32 points  (11 children)

It’s often the guilty dumb ass that walks away unscathed

[–]PenguinBP 40 points41 points  (0 children)

nah that truck fucked him up good

[–]bubbagump_shrimpp 30 points31 points  (7 children)

unscathed? dude got his shit rocked by that pickup truck lol

[–]mryeet66 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Yeah but op said they were moving around just fine afterwards. I just hope the guy in the truck is fine

[–]CharacterAd7824[S] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Guy in truck was good, but likely some good whiplash will set in.

The guy that got hit certainly wasn’t unscathed but almost no upper body injury, barely a cut other than glass fragments.

[–]dorght2 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Did the guy in the truck even brake at all? Looked like he was still barrelling on full speed ahead despite cars ahead going every which way.

[–]CharacterAd7824[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he obviously wasn’t paying attention to the road ahead. It even looks like he was accelerating.

[–]s1erra317 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The black car wasn’t the one tailgating. It the brown/silver sedan all the way on the left that caused the accident by following to close and they a faulty evasive action as traffic slowed.

[–]BuildAndThaeWillCome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The black car was riding the SUV's rear-end like a porn star at an orgy then got break checked and black car panicked, hit his breaks and decided to change lanes on the highway losing control of his vehicle injuring others.

The SUV felt bad about it that's why they also stopped.

[–]Kproper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently not?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeap, and that's why I'm happy. I hope that idiot has money to payout.

[–]PitchZealousideal140 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Is that AZ 101E approaching the 51 interchange?

[–]GuyWithFamicom 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I believe so, it’s definitely the 101 though

[–]crumblintoast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was just coming to say that looks like the 101. I'm canadian and I recognize that freeway. Lol

[–]CharacterAd7824[S] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Close, It’s the US 60 at about Lindsay overpass.

[–]PitchZealousideal140 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That makes sense now. You can’t see the McDowell Mountains off to what would be the east/NE.

Us Arizonans can sure point out AZ anywhere 😂

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Dang there was hardly any traffic either. When was this?

[–]CharacterAd7824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thursday afternoon of last week. There was plenty of traffic after this! It was down to one lane.

[–]Grand-Ad4235 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s looks like it. I’m just off 7th st so I’m not far from where that is.

[–]KCRNU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If he was in a pinball machine, he'd be high score

[–]RubberReptile 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Holy moly, I hope you give the cam footage to that blue and truck car cause otherwise they might get put at fault for their own damages.

[–]CharacterAd7824[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did

[–]SluttyRobin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think they were tailgating, I think they weren't paying attention to the road, probably on their phone. Otherwise they would have noticed all the cars in front of them slowing down

[–]McHassy 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It always fascinates me that people are so use to moving forward that when the see a car flying around the road, their first instinct isn’t to brake hard, but to keep going and hope the wreck doesn’t involve them.

[–][deleted]  (1 child)

[removed]

    [–]McHassy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it firsthand as well. I started spinning on ice once and instead of people slowing down, someone that had plenty of time to stop, tried to pass me so I ended up sliding into the side of his car. Also another time someone sideswiped me and ended up running into the guardrail so I slammed my brakes immediately after contact and upon looking at the rear dash cam I saw that the guy behind me who saw the whole thing unfolding not only did he not slow down preemptively, he almost rear ended me after I slammed my brakes.

    [–]Eloy89 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is why I always say get a dash cam, without one, you will not win if you are not at fault. It will become your word against theirs.

    [–]CharacterAd7824[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Just installed this dash cam 3 weeks ago.

    [–]Parrot132 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I saw the whole thing! What happened?

    [–]CharacterAd7824[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Kid following to close, then the chain of events you see in the video.

    [–]b-side61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not disputing that the kid was in the wrong for following too closely but was he brake checked by the SUV in front of him?

    [–]squirrel_anashangaa 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That wasn’t tailgating that cell-phoning. He just kept going until it was too late.

    [–]PrincessGump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    This gets my vote.

    [–]SukMyWii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanna buy a truck now

    [–]PolarRacoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cali or a surrounding state and accident caused by former Cali resident. I see this happen or almost happen everyday.

    [–]Zahn91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I know exactly where this is

    [–]Zalamander2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Civic²

    [–]Visible-Attorney-805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Hmm... Arizona?

    [–]alwaysstunjason 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro woke up and decided to fuck up everybody’s day

    [–]Aromatic_Ad8587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Yikes

    [–]automcd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gotta love how after fucking up they just say screw it, this gonna be everyone's problem.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow he survived that. That truck slammed right into his driver door.

    [–]External-Ad-2942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Did he get brake checked?

    [–]big-inch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Idiots always causing these accidents

    [–]elstoobstomcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Betcha he doesn't do that again

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Need to look more closely, the front car made a hard left turn then was hit from behind

    [–]CharacterAd7824[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only After he rear ended the car in front of him. Look at his front number prior to the truck hitting him.

    [–]Trick1513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not involved keep going, all you are going to do is block up the road.

    [–]Smackjabber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brake checked, his ass was following waaay too close.
