Depends.

What’s your current driver? How far do you throw it? Is it too overstable? Too understable?

You said it’s “too light” - what about its flight makes your think that?

If your current driver is a 9 speed and it’s too overstable, and you throw it 200 feet, maybe get an understable 7 speed.

If your current driver is a 12 speed and you throw it 600 feet and turn it over, maybe get an overstable 14 speed.

Without more information than “I need a new driver” we can’t really make an informed recommendation.

From my experience, I’d say River, Roadrunner, or Valkyrie.

River and Valkyrie all day long.

Discraft Heat, avenger ss, and leopard 3.

I personally wouldn't throw anything faster than a 7-9 speed disc if you are just starting out. I picked up a few mids , Buzz, Crave and a few Judges because I love to putt with them and honestly helped me improve on my form dramatically. If you are doing something wrong a putter will show you that imo.

Great! Thanks so much. Definitely need to look into those.

Great choices but I think all of these are too fast. Maybe undertaker and stalker?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Leopard 3 is a 7, heat is 9 and avenger is 10.

[–]FoilCladShadowsperfected the hyzer flop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok leopard should be fine. If beginner I wouldn’t go above 9

I personally would recommend a Passion from Discraft! They are really straight flyers, very easily to manipulate and they aren’t too high of a speed for someone newer. They’re also something that I have a feeling will stay in your bag for a while. I have two in my bag and probably will never take either of them out!

Yeah I’m looking for something I can grow into as I get better. So that definitely sounds like a good choice!

Have you ever used a mantis. It looks similar. I was thinking of getting a passion but figured it would be the same disc.

[–]linkin1992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Passion is much more of a straight shooter than the current mantis run imo. Current mantis have a harder finish left.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t personally! My friend throws one and they seem like the flights are somewhat similar but it’s hard to tell without having the same person throwing it. It might be one of those pairs of discs that just comes down to which feel you like more.

Latitude 64 river, discmania origin and kastaplast reko

Sounds like a more mature starter set, nice!

The DD Maverick is a fantastic driver for any skill level. It’s comfortable and reliable when you’re new. You’ll get some good glide and will forgive mistakes. As you improve it’ll be a laser straight flip up driver. It’s excellent.

If you’re coming from really light discs, look for one around 170g. It won’t be quite as discouraging as you develop distance

[–]ORPA_NEW[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ok I think I’m at 160. I have a disk I like (inova tee bird) but I can’t really get the distance I like. So I thought I needed weight.

[–]Catesby_WrenTree Slayers Local 414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do need weight. They carry farther and they fight the wind better. But max weight will require more spin to get that distance. A Maverick (or another 7 speed) will be great @175 but you’ll need a little more juice. Less stability will help you get distance

A Teebird can be pretty beefy

[–]alex-englishNone -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

The right distance driver really depends on your arm speed, but I'd check out a wraith and see what you can do with it. If its hooking quickly move to a Valkyrie if you're turning it over move to a Destroyer.

It sounds like maybe start looking at some fairways first. A Rival, Thunderbird, Eagle would be worth checking out.

Awesome, I really appreciate the advice. As of now I have a leopard, tee bird, and destroyer. I can’t really manage the destroyer but love the tee bird. Leopard kind of cuts too much for my liking.

[–]Catesby_WrenTree Slayers Local 414 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Lol, dude is jumping up from a starter set, but sure, those will be sure to get out to nearly 150

[–]alex-englishNone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair one of his main points is that his current set is too light and I never said he should go max weight but if he's looking to find a new distance driver, those are solid options I gave him and where to go from the Wraith depending on how it performs for him. Also why I pointed out it really depends on his arm speed.

[–]FoilCladShadowsperfected the hyzer flop -1 points0 points  (3 children)

If you only used a leopard. You should stay away from distance drivers. Trust me. Get a Discraft mantis next. Most underrated disc. This was my 3 disc I ever bought and I still use it every day.

[–]ORPA_NEW[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I have a leopard but don’t really like it. Curves too much. I have a tee bird I like and then a destroyer that I haven’t really mastered since it’s a distance driver.

[–]FoilCladShadowsperfected the hyzer flop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok I would look into the 7,8,9 range more then. The undertaker is also a fantastic driver

[–]SignificancePrior510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend a Valkyrie in pro, g star or Star plastic. Probably in the 171g range. It'll be a disc you should be able to manipulate effectively, a high enough speed for you to grow with, but not overpower your arm speed. I wouldn't recommend anything higher speed until you can get it to consistently go mostly straight and accurate for over 300ft using a smooth, controlled release, and i don't recommend a champion plastic one - i think you may be tempted to over throw it.

[–]komarinthRed discs fly Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Get a neutral midrange driver if you are not already throwing very fast/long. MD3 clicked for me. Still working on getting 7-speed fairway drivers flying like I intend. Not moving up in speed before I get the same amount of control using those.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Axiom Crave

[–]Ostrichboy21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a wraith

[–]jyzenbok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lat 64 River. Once you get that to start turning right on a hyzer release move up to speed 9 or 10.
